Wow!  The builds shown lately really are looking nice! Bow [bow]

Doom,

Remember, the most important person to please when building is you, unless of course you are doing commission work. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Any Interested parties,

I have been keeping up with the group, and providing some feedback, but have not mentioned progress on my second Petty car.  I am presently working on the body and the masking and painting of the red and blue.  As with the Kyle Petty car, I could not match the blue used on the decal sheet, so I am going to be carefully removing the unnecessary portions of the decals, once I finish painting.  With six different blue paints in my collection, I thought that adding white to one of them would match the decal blue, but alas, this was not the case.  Anyway, I hope to be finishing up soon and posting some photos of the end product.

Im back from my unwelcome leave from the hobby. First of all, I would like to express my extreme sorrow for ditching a GB that i started. I feel so guilty. Hats off to the ones dedicated enough to stay on and finish with the build.

At this point, I would like to look for someone who can be the head of the GB from this point. I don't have much time until I go off to Korea and then to Phillips Exeter where I will be cut off from modeling for around 4 years. Unless I can establish a good pace there, the workload is too much for models. Granted, I could finish one every few months, but with all the tools that I would need and the motivation that is required for each build, I think it impractical.

Its been great hanging with you guys for the last two years. I will be checking back on constantly and making posts here and there. I don't want this to sound like a fare-well, as I have yet till Septerber 5th to get staretd in Exeter, but on June 17, I am catching a flight to Korea and from then modeling will start to thin out from my life.

Good luck in your endeavors across the big pond.  Keep in touch whenever you can.  You have put a lot of time and effort into modeling and the FSM forums.  That will be missed.

I will sorely miss the humor and wit you have brought to this GB, yet I wish you the best of luck in your pursuits. Please keep in touch with us here. I know I'd go crazy if I was in a place I couldnt build models, at my age model building is one of the few things that keeps me sane. Propeller [8-]

Thank you guys for your kind words. I will miss you all dearly. It's not everyday that one can go online and find a band of familiar helpful people

I have still not abandoned all hope. Especially because New Hampshire (home to Phillips Exeter) doesn't have any sales tax! Big Smile [:D] Espins1 has pmed me a couple days ago wishing to be the next host of the GB. If anyone else wishes to have this power, please pm me. I'm sure we can work this out diplomatically (prepares grenade)

Aw geez....

I'm just back from overhauling the kitchen so now I can catch up with the builds, and I find that you have to leave us. Good luck to you in New Hampshire and I'm thinking Espins1 should do fine with this bunch!

In between wall repairs and flooring installation I was able to snatch bits of modeling time to work on the Albatros and once the kitchen cabinets were mounted I pushed it through to completion.

FInally some stuff from me. Sorry for the poor photography, I'll get  some better tonight.

This is the 1/48 Revell-Monogram kit. I've built one before, but it was destroyed so now I am doing a newer, better one with more resin and PE.

It has a Verlinden cockpit, radome internals, Two avionics bays and doors, M61 Vulcan cannon and bay, and some other VP details. It also has the eduard color PE Set, an aires exhaust nozzle and can set, AM decals, Eduard RBF flags, and Hasegawa weapons sets.

So far I've gotten the pit pretty much done except for cleaning up some lines and touching up scratched paint, washes, drybrushing, and dullcote.

I'm sorry the photography is poor this time around, I'll take another round tonight.

I'll get some more pics of the fuselage soon and post them.

Thanks for looking, critisize away!

What's wrong with the photos?  You did a good job with the macro setting (at least as I can see).  GREAT JOB on the detail! Bow [bow]  I am slooooooooowly getting my detailing skills improved, but you my friend have done what I can only hope to be able to do some day.  How is the kit coming together?  I am working on two F-14 by Monogram (for the F-14 GB - I am working on a P-38 for this one), and has great as that kit is, it has plenty of flaws that need improvement (body fit, wheel well doors, etc.)

montana it looks awesome.  great detail work.

well folks another update for me.

i made an important milestone on this build.  at least in my mind.  the bomb station/pit/bomb bay/radio station/waist gunner position assembly is complete.  i have added all that i am going to.  this entire subassembly totaled approx 70 hours.  it is approximately 20% kit parts/80% scratchbuild.  the scratchbuild includes wire and styrene.  ive been working off of several different sets of pics and ref books.  the reason this part of the build took so much additional time (not just building time) was as i worked i felt myself rushing parts.  to avoid the just get it done reaction i put it aside and then picked it up again when my mood was better.

the entire assembly.

i know the bomb bay isnt the "cleanest".  no matter what i did i couldnt get that "clean" look.

next up will be to begin the detailing of the fuse walls.  this includes the gun positions/pit walls/nav station walls/radio room walls.

Montana, great job on the cockpit.  Isn't it a shame to do all that and then cover it up.  On the photos it looks like you just need a little higher F-stop and then adjust the shutter if it darkens.  Then focus on the middle of the shot so the front and back of the part will be in range.  I have luck using F8 with 1/10 or so shutter with a tripod and delayed auto shutter. I use a couple of Flourescent full spectrum bulbs in bell shaped clamp on things.   I know, now I will get attacked by the camera nerds.  Thanks for sharing.

Bythe way, I am still working on the PBM for this GB and only have a couple of colors to airbrush.  I got sidelined by a cute little Marder gun carrier on the armour site.  Greg

The progress since my last post looks very nice.  Great job to all who have shown their efforts to the group.  I too hate to see our "leader" depart, but I also wish you luck with your endeavors going forward.  I have been a little preoccupied the last couple of weeks preparing for a metric century (100 kilometers) bike ride that takes place next week, so not much building has been taking place in my room.  Anyway, as promised, here are photos of the now completed Richard Petty car including shots with the Kyle petty car that I finished a while back, and the original box for the kits.  Any and all feedback is welcome.

Petty paints are always tricky!

What did you use for the red and blue? It looks like the blue is slightly different on the two cars but they both look really good! The Petty colors did change a bit through the years....

Daryl,

If you followed any of my earlier postings here you know that I had one Censored [censored] of a time trying to match the blue used in the Monogram decals.  What I wound up doing was mixing "Grabber Blue" with white for Kyle's car and used straight "Grabber Blue" on Richard's car.  For the red, I mix Fluorescent Red with Chevrolet Engine Red at about a 1:1 ratio.  All of the paints are from the Model Master enamel line of paints.  The guy that I built them for loaned me a piece of a rear spoiler from one of Richard Petty's cars a couple of years ago and my red mix and the "Grabber Blue" were very close to matching the real thing.  The reason for the different blue shades in this case was my foolish attempt at matching the decal blue on Kyle's car, and thinking that I had nailed it, when instead, it had nailed me. Banged Head [banghead]

Oh well, it was still fun as until I started building these Petty cars (I have now built seven of Richard's, one of which wound up being a gift to Richard himself, and this one of Kyle's), I built little other than military figures, aircraft, armor, and an occasional ship or submarine.  If nothing else, it was good to expand my horizons using of all things Shock [:O] gloss paint.  Anyway, thanks for the appreciative feedback, and let me know if you have any additional questions.  Oh, if you were wondering, the chrome trim around the windows is Bare Metal Foil chrome, and the black strips down the windshields are Bare Metal Foil black chrome.

WalMart used to carry a spray enamel in a large can called Harbor Blue that was an excellent Petty blue. They discontinued it 3 or 4 years ago and I have since used it up. I painted his Talladega with it and it's spot on....though it looks slightly green in my camera flash......

I hadn't thought of mixing fluorescent red with chevy engine red. It looks really good and has some gloss to it. I used Tamiya's fluorescent red spray on his '74 Dodge so I could get a gloss finish but I think it may be just a little too bright......

I've gone through many sheets of BMF but I've never had any luck with their black sheets. That stuff needs to be fresh to work properly so maybe I just got a hold of an old sheet.

I have a lot of Petty projects to go so I'm always looking for ideas. There is a Petty kit car Dart and a 43 jr Valiant still in the stash pile and I still want to do his 200th win car. Thanks for the ideas!

Daryl,

I got the Grabber Blue suggestion from a Polar Lights kit that I built as that was their recommendation for Petty Blue.  As I mentioned, I got to compare it to a piece of the real thing, and it was pretty darn close.  Nice job on your cars by the way! Thumbs Up [tup]  I do not know what is giving you a hard time with the Bare Metal Foil as you mentioned.  I have had all of mine for several years now, and none have given me a problem yet.  Now I did get one in matt aluminum that did not seem to adhere very well, and I have relegated it to masking off aircraft canopies for airbrushing, as it works fine for that.  You must have gotten a bad sheet yourself.  Anyway, I think that the foil is a much easier route than trying to paint those lines on the windshield, as they usually cause me some frustration.

Here is my latest update on my C-47. After many frustrating attempts at invasion stripes I finally got them by eyeballing them a little and I will have to wait until all the tape comes off to see what corrections are needed. The wings were easy but the fuselage was just a pain to say the least (compound curves etc). I joined the wings this weekend and found a hugh gap at the upper joint that took all weekend to fill and sand repeadely. I have the underside painted but the joint there still shows up so more sanding in the future. So here I am ready to paint the top colour and some sanding on the bottom left to do. Invasion stripes all taped up.

Thanks for looking guy's, any tips etc appreciated.

Well guys, I finally finished my "floater."  Actually it doesn't look so bad for a 1957 mold.  I have always loved anything with a gull wing and Navy paint.  I fixed up the flying stand which came with the kit and have posed it flying dead stick.  Greg

The result is beautiful!! What is the scale? I've got the Revell Pine Island in the stash, which has a little itty bitty version of the PBM.

I would say the scale is about 1/118 since my model has a 1 foot wingspan and the Mariner had a 118 foot wingspan.  I think in those days they made the model fit the box.

I painted it with gray primer then started with flat white and added intermediate blue and flat sea blue from Model Master (emamel) to the white to wash out the two top colors.  Then there was a milky clear (Polyscale) sprayed over these.  I sanded the surface lightly with 3200 polishing cloth which left the wash in the panel lines and low areas.  Some pastel powder was used on the lighter areas.  I masked the top color with blue tape which was spaced out 1/32 and freehanded the rest.  Always clear your airbrush tip before getting near your paint job to prevent splats.  Thanks, Greg
