Joe:

I tried to get it done tonight but ... enamels need more time to cure Sad [:(]

I will post some pictures tomorrow. My "Miss Kay" is all painted, and tomorrow I will start decals, so hopefully during the Weekend I will put final touch to this kit. I spread this project over four months slowly but surely pushing it forward. A lot of difficult steps for me: first time everything

- scribbing lines

- scratch building

- resin cockpit, UC

- resin modeling

It was for me a lot of learning during this build and I am glad your GB put me into this challange.

Making a nice kit out of Monogram/Revell kit is a great experience.

Unfortunetely I will post if as GZT1 because my original account is blocked Sign - Oops [#oops] but I am still the same Greg Big Smile [:D]

december 7 1941, a day which will live in infamy.

the "attack" begins at approximately 7:51. at approximately 11:00 the last plane landed on the japanese carriers. the time between is filled with death and destruction and the end of paradise. six carriers. approximately 350 aircraft. a plan designed to be just a distraction for the main thrust into the south pacific by japanese naval and army units. just a distraction, one designed to cripple the united states navy so that the japanese could move freely through the pacific.

in the end 2388 military and civilian dead. 2107 navy and marine as well as 233 army and 48 civilians. 1109 military and civilian wounded. 710 navy and marine as well as 364 army and 35 civilians. 44 states represented, as well as the district of columbia, guam, hawaii, the phillipines, and hawaii. 16 congressional medal of honors given as well as 51 navy crosses, 53 silver stars, four navy and marine corps medals, one distinguished service medal, and three bronze stars. 8 battleships sunk or heavily damaged, one minelayer sunk, two auxilliaries sunk or capsized and one heavily damaged. 169 aircraft lost, 92 navy and 77 army. 150 damaged, 31 navy and 128 army. all this in 110 minutes of combat.

for this amount of damage the japanese lost nine fighters, 15 dive bombers, and five torpedo planes. one I-class submarine was lost as well as the five midget subs. the casualties; 55 airmen, 121 submarine crewmen, and nine midget sub crewmen.

these facts taken from several sources.

the attack was so quick, so sudden, many of those killed didnt even know they were at war. even after the bombs and bullets started falling people didnt believe that they were being attacked. one report of a young man hunting with a cousin didnt believe there was an attack even after his cousin was killed. after that day the hawaiian islands were torn from being a territory governed by a few families to becoming a true part of the united states becoming a state not long after the war. the us navy was forced to change from a navy of battleship groups to a navy centered on the carrier.

today it is said that the arizona still weeps for her crew.

december 7 1941. never to be forgotten.

Ya doing just the text for  Miss Kay? Or were you planning on a little nose art to go with?

again i say it is not as important that you finish by the "end date".  it is important that you finish.  folks this is a hobby.  this build is a tribute to men and women who died in a historic event.  all i ask is that you finish.

thanks gangs  and odd thing is that u all read my mind while i was working.  i told myself   why not do paint all white first then try my best to mask tape it then paint to wood. sound so simple to me  Sign - With Stupid [#wstupid]  why didnt i thought of that in first place SoapBox [soapbox]   like someone told me   learn the mistakes will help you get better.

Finally got bad snow hit in rochester area and had to shovel twice and alone  argh argh  at least good exerices but kill my back badly.  Need a snow blower or Evil [}:)] flamethrower Big Smile [:D] nah it will create black ice all over the building lol.

alrighty  i better hit the bed since its almost 5am  and yes im doing graveyard  shift    no fun! but money is money.  Zzz [zzz] Zzz [zzz] Zzz [zzz]

Thats a good idea, Joe. I've done the same for wing walk area lines a couple of times and it works surprisingly well. The trick as Joe suggests would be to paint the whole deck white first, not just around the line areas, because the difference in thickness might show. Don't ask how I know...

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Seems that it might be easier to start with the lightest color, and work your way to the darker wood color. It would just be a matter of finding tape thin enough to mask the lines

umm  i have problem argh Banged Head [banghead],  seems like i screwed up on the flight deck while painting the white lines.  I tried to start over by removing with thinner seem not work, so i spray it with primer flat gray to start over   Censored [censored]

I will paint it to wood color again and im wondering if you guys have any better idea how to paint white lines?  on the flight deck   it was already lined up by kit itself but im not sure how to make it to almost perfect white line.  i tried with color pencil seem not working.  i had hard time to tape it with mask tape all over the deck so i thought why not freehand paint, but oops.  Make a mess.   i tried to touch up and it doesnt match the color so grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.   so hope you have any easy way to or idea to do white lines.

that what i thought.  boy wish color photo was available on the japanese carrier back in the '41 so that way it will be helpful Propeller [8-].

and also im not too sure if kate was camo colors too. since i have see and heard it was dark green with brown mattles or dark green with silver chipped paint so im not exactly sure. but im pretty positive that all of the fighters and bombers was fresh painted and polished unless im wrong.

will update you all abt my project soon as i can.

That's what i think too (and it may have been discussed earlier in this GB-not sure). But i understand that those were pretty brand new aircraft used and kept in top shape just to help ensure of the attack. Plus if i'm not mistaken, carrier based aircrft are usually better maintained regardless of nationality. So fortunately, weathering may not be needed (provided those aircraft are big enugh to weather.

Now i've seen the green, but i confess i've never seen any kind of camoflauge scheme with any Japanese aircraft. So the dark green and brown mattles are not familiar to me. But in looking at old photographs that all happen to be in black and white, it is kinda hard to determine color on some of them.

Roger

i have many color schemes of the a/c from those carriers.  there is a good mixture of both cammo'd a/c and plane jane schemes.  the plane jane are the carmel/gray (not the proper term but the best way to describe it) and the green/gray.  my schemes however wont help you in that scale though as they would be highly difficult to replicate.  i would say you could go with just a few zeke on the deck for a post launch scene with the zekes being the backup a/c.   the zekes as far as i can see were the carmel/gray scheme.

Ya know? I'm not too rightly sure on that! It was my understanding that the Imperial Army had their aircraft painted in that emerald looking green and the Imperial Navy painted in that white/light grey. But in every picture i had seen of the planes that bombed Pearl Harbor, they were all painted as the latter and not the former. Just my observation though

thanks desertrat and joe

actually the red hull is the original color from the kit box   i havent paint it yet smiles  surely it does catch eyes.  I plan to airbrush it to hull red which is bit darker since i couldnt find cocoa brown which the kit says,   so i got hull red instead.  the guy at LHS told me hull red is similar to cocoa brown.

now question   for planes   im not sure for color on val and zekes since the kit said its green and dark green(nakajima) and  i have no idea what that means   does anybody knows?  i thought vals and zekes was in grayish color and kate was in green color   help me out  thanks.

i already paint the flight deck to wood color.  boy it looks good   now wish me luck to airbrush or paint the white lines.  it might take while for me to do it since new schudule changed at my job argh so hopefully will compete it by dec 7th

and joe ummm   exactly what time does the uss ward shoot the first shot at the mini sub?

dec 7, 1941
7:40 am  183 japanese fighters, dive bombers, level bombers, and torpedo bombers from the first wave form up after what was termed the best launch yet north of kakhuku point.

7::49  the commander of the attack cmdr fuchida signals "to" meaning charge to the other aircraft.  the flight breaks up to begin attack runs.

7:53 to 8:00  aircraft from the six carriers begin attacks on nas pearl harbor (ford island), hickam field, ewa marine air corps station, bellows field, wheeler field, kaneohe naval air station, and naval vessels and stations located in pearl harbor.

8:00 to 9:00 b-17c's and b-17e"s arrive from the us mainland and are attacked while trying to land at various fields.

9:00 2 p-40"s piloted by 2lt whiteman and lt bishop are shot down after getting airborne.

9:05  four p-36"s led by 1lt sanders take flight, moments later another p-36  piloted by 2lt moore takes off.  he joins up with 2lt brown from haleiwa field

these are but a few of the aircraft that got airborne.  i have it written down but cant seem to find the estimated total sorties flown that morning.

11:00 cmdr fuchida makes his final flight over the destruction.  he leaves the area when he confirms he is the last plane to leave.

And i sure know that, Joe. The important thing is completion, but with the intent of finishing on time it looks like i will be falling short of my goal. Disapprove [V] Oh well, at least i'm not the first one to run late on a build....
