gray nice work so far.  looking good.

bondoman you are on the list.  sorry for the delay.  had some offline issues to deal with.  as for the b-10 that will work.  i seem to remember reading somewhere, now lost in the pile, that they were there used for training.  as for the paint scheme od/gray was the proper scheme for the military a/c.  however i have no evidence for or against.  as long as the unit markings are right nmf or od will work.  and thankyou for the kind words about this build.  i hope that members look at this build as i do.  a tribute to those involved.  never to be forgotten.

ygmodeler i hope your trip to the islands will be a pleasant one.  enjoy yourself.

jason start when you can.  the zeke should be a good build for you.

brian i have that kit also.  i am doing the 1/700 version.  get started when you can.  i will be watching how yours comes together.

as i stated to me the most important part of this build is to have fun.  if you learn something then bonus.  i do ask that members finish.  if you dont finish by the so-called end date then fine but please finish.  dont let it land in the never going to touch again pile.

my first update.

this is the minihobbies uss arizona in 1/700.  so far just some basic construction.  i will be adding pe to this very soon.

since these pics have been taken i have masked the hull and then oversprayed black.  i will be starting the pe railing soon, i hope.

Fightn' I just got started on the Val for the GB.  Today on the Military Cannnel, they showed the dimise of those carriers at Midway that were on the PH raid.  Intrestingly, the plane I am building came from the Hiyru which was the last carrier to be sunk.  I have posted the interior workup.  So far I have the fuse joined along with the wing and am doing the puttying tonight.

Next we prime and get ready for the blue and red background paint for the meatballs and the tail navigation stripes.  I have done the Future dip and chrome foil masking of the 5! canopy parts.  In this picture is an artifact of the actual plane that was shot down at Pearl.  It is Grey Pupon in color.  The tails of these Vals were painted red before the war and the gray paint was just applied over the red or the bare metal.  I am mixing up some paint to match the picture.

Got a little more done.  All the markings are painted on except the numbers and data plate. I like the color I mixed except it is a little light.  The weathering will darken it slightly.  I will do one more installment when I finish.  Greg

On December 7, 1941 Aichi D3A1 (Val) number BII-233 piloted by PO2c Koreyoshi Sotoyama and Flyer1c Hajime Murao flew from the deck of the Hiryu, never to return.  It arrived in the second wave of bombers whose mission was to bomb harbor vessels missed by the first wave.  Ken Taylor, flying a P40 from Ewa Airstrip, shot this plane down as it was forming up to return to carrier Hiryu at 9:10 AM.  WWW.J-aircraft.com/research/otherres.htm is a good link.

I'm still not happy with the ariel and canopy fit but I'm finished.Make a Toast [#toast]

Do the best job you can then be proud of your efforts.

FTNJoe- I have no clue what I'm getting myself into here, except that the Pearl Harbor GB's look to be REALLY respectable. I've been in one GB already where everybody else bailed...

I've got a Williams Bros. B-10 in the stash. It could probably be a B-12 if I bought her flowers and candy. There were a few of these at Wheeler.

She'd be as God made her, in a NMF. Or OD over gray. I need info!!!

I originally thought I would dress her in yellow and blue, but I'm moved to honor those who wore war paint in conflict. I REALLY can't find a photo in Hawaii of this bird, but I do have photos of B-12s at March AFB in 1935, that I will submit for your consideration.

I grew up in an international airline family. In 1959 I was in Oahu and they took us to see a Zero wreck up in the Pali's which when you think about it was at that time was about as fresh as Gulf War 1  is now, very fresh to me.

july 28 1941.  the us puts an embargo on oil sales, and closes ports to japanese vessels.

this becomes the act japan claims to be the reason, or one of the main reasons, for the need for war.  the hawaii operation is to be the diversion for the major thrusts throughout the pacific region.

and so the build begins.

do u mean brewster buffalo?  I dont think they were stationed at the pearl during attack.  they were moved to midway island on one of the carrier.  I could be wrong since i read in some of maginzes or websites couple months ago that they were at the pearl before dec 7th.

I think you are right...I will look into it....if not maybe a  Vindicator or Devestator....need to look into those I think those were stationed not at Pearl but definietly on the island during the attack.

Anyone have references on them?

Joe is it too late to join this GB?  If not, put me down for the Revell/Monogram P-40 also.  I built it a few years ago and it was fairly nice.

The PBY in Action book is a pretty good photo reference, with pics of all the various models.  There were several models at Pearl: the patrol squadrons used the PBY-3, maybe the -4, and definitely the PBY-5. Utility squadron VJ-2 had 2 PBY-1's.  The amphibian -5A was just entering service, and I've never seen a pic of one at PH during or after the attack.

The patrol squadron PBY's were in the blue-gray over gray scheme, with small roundels and black codes below the cockpit. The familiar red and white rudder stripes were not authorized until a little later.  VJ-2's PBY-1's (at least one of them) were still in the old yellow wing scheme, with the lemon yellow tail.

This should give you a pretty good selection to choose from, as long as it's not a PBY-5A.  Other links on this thread can get you the numbers of the patrol squadrons on the scene.

greg the revell kit builds up pretty nice.  the pit is wrong for the "b" version though.  the ip is for the "e" version.  i am still looking for pics that will help you.  there are a few showing the large inline white numbers and a few showing the tail markings.  unfortunately i cannot seem to find them at the moment.  figures when i need them i cant find them.

carlos you are on the list, welcome to the build.

I always use google but for some reason this subject does not give me much response. I just need to read a bit more about P-40 use in a Pacific region. I already have three kits waiting Smile [:)] plus P-36 finaly arrived as well. Planty of reason to get more info on them.

For Pearl Harbor  GB I use Revell 1/48 P-40B. The only problem with this kit is raised panel lines - I never did it - so removing those will be a challange for some time. I have to get some scribbing tool to do it and try. The kit is cheap ($12) so even if I screw it up, a new one is on the shelf at Michaels Big Smile [:D]

Hobbycraft made a 1/48 kit of P-40B but I can not find anyone who carry those kits anymore. Even Hobbycraft does not have it in their current listing.

Joe, tanks  for trying. I still have a bit time to start - finishing my P47 and Spit Nk Vb - so if you find it I appreciate if you can share it with me.

I spoke to a pilot who stationed at Wheelers Field and he will take a look into some pictures he has. Maybe we will be able to get some info on this subject. I will keep you posted in my progress here.

Thanks again

thanks for the correction.  to be honest i have trouble with english.

i seem to have misplaced the item i was looking for.  i had an army manual showing the cammo and marking directions for a/c from 1921 until 2000.  now i cant seem to find it.

remember that when they changed the color scheme they changed the markings to very simple stuff.  plane/unit numbers and the national insignia.  makes most builds for this time period very easy to do.  no personal markings.

btw here is a russian site that may be of some help.  has both drawings and pictures of planes involved.

many thanks for the info.

Just like hitting the wall. No pictures. The only I have were taken from Gabreski book - but P-36 painted there were from 1940 - a bit long time prior to the attack - and as Joe states - those schemas changed in late 1941. Ouch !

No mentioned even once about planes colors or markings not to mention serial numbers Smile [:)]. To be honest I did not expect such problems.

Sure I can assume that Olive Drab abd Grey but the Serial numbers ?

Ohm well... going back to research
