Would you please validate (or reprimand) my decal drawing of my five-color lozenge artwork for my D.VII top wing? Based on all the data I could find on the web (including your well-written Aeroscale article), I think I understand, but then again, I stopped taking my medication years ago, and therefore I tend to think I know lots of things!

If I understand correctly, the bolt of cloth is laid out chordwise, and repeats, unlike the four-color lozenge, which is turned 180 degrees alternately each panel. The flaps were covered left-right, at 90 degrees off of the wing layout. I think. The whole thing can be rather confusing.

Many thanks for your input.

Greetings ModelNerd!

First for anyone interested in the mysteries of lozenge here is a bit of fun

Stephen-

Thanks for the link, very good info!  I am still having trouble finding the thrust line in the DVII pics.  I'll keep studying, though! Thumbs Up [tup]

Time for the Ol' Nerd to deliver a progress report.

Monogram's D.VII will never be among the "cutting edge" in D.VII kit offerings, but as I stated earlier, this was a free kit, and who among us really cares turn down a free anything, right? I just saved myself around 30 bucks, too! This kit has plenty of room for improvement, here's what I've done so far:

Monogram gives you three cockpit components only: a control column, a seat, and a highly inaccurate instrument panel (according to my research. I should post a disclaimer right now that I am no authority on WWI aircraft, lest anyone mistakenly assume so!) The seat looked as if the pilot would slide right off, as there was little room for his fanny. So I added a little sheet styrene to make it pass the smell test:

If I did not add these bulkheads to the fuselage interior, there would have been noticeable gaps behind the engine and the seat. Again, just plain ol' sheet styrene:

If I wanted anything even close to passable, I was going to have to scratch my own cockpit. Here's the beginnings. Sheet styrene, styrene rod, and copper wire. I was able to use the kits control stick (the dark green part), as it was passable:

The guns are pretty basic, but again, as I am a cheap so-and-so, I was not inclined to replace them. I simply drilled out the barrels for a bit more authentic feel:

Here's a shot of some of the smaller parts/assemblies, ready for installation. The wood grain effect was accomplished by first spraying a tan color, then applying watercolor browns with a wide brush. The seat cushion was sculpted out of Sculpey (a craft clay which can be baked in the oven):

Here's a shot of my scratched instrument panel. Only about 95% accurate, I know, but don't tell the judges! Mike Grant decals were used.  The interior will eventually get lozenge pattern:

Here's the guns again. I added faux gunsights punched from sheet styrene. Should pass the "two foot" test, I think:

More to follow, comments welcome.

Mark, well done IMHOThumbs Up [tup]

Check your PM.

Nicely done, Mark!  I think you have added quite a bit to a sparsely detailed kit.  I really like your Sculpey idea for the seat cushion, think I am gonna try that on mine too.  The kit seat has a large ejector pin mark right in the center that is impossible to fix.  A sculpted seat cushion is just the ticket!

Frank, Note the key lozenge and all similar coloured lozenges in the four colour specifically you get a ">>>> " in directionality.

Greetings ModelNerd,

Sorry for the late contact had a bad time logging on and staying with the Finescale server in the early AM.  After my initial post it kept timing out. Just the forum. Everything else was ok.

Anyway, on your question.  Both 4 & 5 colour were alternated. That is ever other panel turned 180 degree in most production wings. This helped break up the pattern.  What you have is called a "cookie cutter."  Eduard did this in the lozenge decals provided in their Fokker D.VII kits.  That is, the same first two panels are repeated over and over with no shift in the loz locations.  If you look on the lozenge thread link I provided you will see a 5 colour Fokker D.VII from the trailing edge and the lozenges that are close to the factory edges .  The mating areas don't match but in some cases are very close.

From the thread I linked here. ". . .I would like to add that the the panel orientations were alternated.  Especially with the OAW airframes.  That is panels were turned 180 degerees from the next that it was joined to.  The red arrows show the panel seams.  The yellow arrows show the same lozenges on each panel as they oppose each other because the panels are at 180 degrees. .  . "

Lozenge Hell, continued:

Mr. Lawson, here is the 5-color lozenge again, only this time, each panel has been rotated 180 degrees. I might be crazy, but I still see a rather uncomfortable repeating pattern along the butt joints, especially the "tan" color lozenges. (But then again, I can also see a likeness of the Virgin Mary in my grilled cheese sandwich!) I'm not at all certain or confident that I'm aligning my lozenges correctly?!? What say you?

I made a rather sophomoric blunder earlier - I failed to notice that your fine AEROSCALE article had FIVE pages, not just ONE page! (Duh!) Well hey, kids, laundry, dishes, trash, it's easy to get distracted around here!

Thanx-

Mr. Lawson do you happen to have that amazing article in a printer friendly format?  I didn't see a button for that on the website.

Welcome to the build, ben! Some GBs want their participants to wait until their entry is completed, but not in this case. Feel free to help yourself to a badge right now and display it with pride! Thumbs Up [tup]

Never-the-less this is what they did BUT the lozenges did not match up on the joined edges as neatly as you portray. Drop the location of the lozenges with each panel because not all panels were the same length.

I worked in a canvas / awning company going to college.  Panels were sheared according to a pattern using only the fabric needed to keep waste to a minimum. On the top wing end cap and the first two panels from each end were the least likely to line up with similar lozenges.

Greetings chef_ben;

It is one of the few documents I don't offer on my website concerning modeling.  The only place to find it is at Aeroscale.  But I am happy to try to answer questions here.

Very good, then. Now that I am armed with the appropriate knowledge, I shall proceed.

Stephen:

Check your junk mail file, I sent you the article redone in Word format.  I will send it to you again if you like, but not to anyone else without your permission.  I'd like to make sure the guy who does the work gets the proper reward.
