Freddie - looking good on your Jug! That euro dark green certainly seems to match interior photos I have of Republic-built P-47's. Muuuch darker than the "interior green" of Curtiss-built birds. Thumbs Up [tup]

Well, better late than never, so here I am starting in on my Academy 1/48 P-47D...should be able to squeeze this in before the end of the year no problem! Got a pre-start shot with all of the stuff I'd like to add to it...have a lot of different P-47 AM decals, one of which I had picked out to use, but man the Academy markings in the kit are nice - I may have to give them one last shot to see if I can get them to work. Love checkerboards!

Started another P-47 which I hope to get finished by the end of the year.  It's Tamiya's 1:48 Scale P-47M.  After finishing the last one, a P-47D-25Re, I just loved the model and wanted to build another one.  I started in the cockpit, painting and assembling all the parts.  The belts I made from paper.  I used the information from an article on Hyperscale by Rafe Morrisey.  He made belts from masking tape and I modified his methods by using regular paper.  Here are he belts before attachment to the seat and then after they were attached.

Here is the cockpit, minus the seat.  I painted it testors MM 35092, which is a color I use for a lot of cockpits.  It doubles as a good substitute for Grumman's Bronze Green too.

Here is the cockpit WITH he seat in it:

I joined the fuselage halves, attached the verticle fin and the front plate with the coolers.  Here's what I have done so far, and what it looks like

Here are two pictures of the other two P-47's I did finish this year.  One is Tamiya's 1:48 Razorback, a P-47D-10 Re:

And more recently a Bubbletop, a P-47D-25Re:

I'll post more pictures as they become available.  Thanks for looking and always, comments welcome.

Regards,

Freddie from LI

Hey Marc

From all he info  have, the cockpit was a dull dark green throughout.  I use Testors Modelmaster Dk Euro Green #35092.  I suppose you could lighten or darken it depending on the scale you're working with, but that would be all up to you.  The wheel wells and other interior spaces are yellow ZC primer and the inside of the cowl is NMF.   Really early P-47's were painted inside the cowl but they stopped that because the paint didn't last due to engine heat.  Plus with all the oil those engines throw around, what's going to rust?  I hope that helps.  Now, go build those models!!

Freddie from LI

Hey, nice Jug! Finish is great....dig the markings as well. One question - aren't the 'pit walls usually "interior green"? Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Was digging through my Jug-box inspecting parts last night getting ready to start on this guy (finally!). Couple of GB's that are wrapping up at the end of '08 I need to bang out! Shock [:O]

You know John

I think you may be right with that.  I know on the Curtiss props the info is placed longways with the blade and I had though that the Hamilton props were he same.  However, I brole a rule with that and I was following the directions from the kit to the letter, and they show hem cross ways.  Now that I look at it it looks out and out wrong.  there was a little silvering to that I need to address so I'll fix that.  Thanks for the heads up and the nice words concerning everything else.

Freddie, thats a very realistic finish, well done.  It looks used, but not beat.  One very small thing, and on your particular P-47 I could be wrong, but usually the data near the prop hub on the blades is along the blade axis, not across it.  But very nice, and if you hadn't given such a close in photo it's not so easy to see.

Hey Guys and Gals,

I haven't posted here on this forum in awhile.  I have been cleaning up some unfinished kits I have laying about.  For whatever reason, some kits you just lose interest in during the build and it goes onto the shelf.  Some really good kits too!  A Tamiya Spitfire and a Hasegawa C.202, both in 1:48.  Why I put these down I don't know.  This last kit I finished, well pretty much finished, is Tamiya's 1:48 scale P-47D Thunderbolt.  This is one of the best 1:48 scale models ever produced.  For those of us you who have built one, you know what I'm speaking about.  Those who haven't, you're really denying yourself an outstanding build experience.

That being said, here are some details of this build.  She's painted using Alclad II paints and Modelmaster enamels for the non NMF areas.  I used Aeromaster Decals and weathering was done using thinned oils and pastel chalk.  Other than that, it's an OOB build.

Here are the pictures.  I hope they meet with you're approval and as always, comments are welcome.  Thanks for looking.

This would be a pretty long project Smile [:)]. The 56FG got a lot of them. Basically gabby first flew with 315 Polish Sq. on Spits and than he took many of Polish pilots to 56th. I may just stop here because I am running out of Thunderbolts Smile [:)].

After I made my razorback, I am going to paint insignia next time. The nose art , stripes and checkerboard may also be done with masks. I am getting masks from Montex and they have such solutions. It would be so cool to paint them. Decals on such curved faces is always a struggle.

there's an idea dupesSmile [:)]. I think that would work well. don't forget the cowling masking because that is what really needs help.  One more reason to mask the stripes-the fuselage invasion stipes overlap and are not stragiht on the bottomDead [xx(]

You know, the more I think about it, having the kit decals to use as a "guide" to cut out masks (also would eliminate all the scale conversion and measuring) wouldn't be all that hard. Hmmmm. Mischief [:-,]

Dupes, it is the Rescue squadron release. My opinion-PAINT THE STRIPES AND THE NOSE!  The nose decals wrinkle horribly in bad places unless you cut slits in them. The stripes on mine were rather thick and did not lay down very well.  I love that scheme, but I strongly suggest painting it although masking would be a job.  Thnx for the commentsBig Smile [:D]

Sharp Jug, Raider! Love those checkerboard nose patterns, and the weathered NMF looks spot on! Big Smile [:D]

The second one looks pretty sweet too...is that the "Rescue Squadron" release? I've got that one in the stash, was wondering how well those massive stripe decals would lay down.

Here it is!

More pics on the post in the a/c forum

as a bonus here is a Hasegawa 1/48 P-47d Razorback I did before this one. THe kit was alright but the decals were HORRIBLE! Very thick and didn't settle down well. Oh well.

Possibly a pair of 1/72 Lindberg'ers.Whistling [:-^]

I just listen to my friend who gave me a bit lecture on picture editing including overview of few software packages. Photoshop, GIMP, PaintShopPro and Photoshop Elements. Since I have license for the last three, I picked the least (fastest) demanding. I used Photoshop Elements (old ver 2) and just use a quick fix for color balance and brightness. It worked right perfect first time. A custom White balance was used while taking a picture what helped.

I found all other packages a bit annoying, and learning curve too steep for me - I just want to fix my picture and not spend days of learning how todo it. I am not professional graphic designer and I never beone (no desire at all Smile [:)] )so I vote for an old tool from stripped out Photoshop Smile [:)]
