Yah, I know what you mean.  The wind is the killer.  Other than that the temp. is not that bad.  Right now it is -52 degrees with the windchill.  Prediction is it may break by the weekend, that is no wind.  Still going to be on cool -30 area.

Had to break out the heavy artillery today to go to work.  Left the car at home.  Walked to take the transit.

I remember when I was young (yes I was young at one time), and back home, had a lovely place for tobogganing.  The trees were spaced just right and we could slalom between them all the way to the bottom.  It was a blast, unfortunately on one of the runs, couldn't quite make it.  Head on into the last tree.  Lucky only my ego was bruised.  Big Smile [:D]

With temperatures like that, makes me feel like a whimp, complaining about a measly -10 degress, maybe -20 when at it's worst, and that was long ago! Smile [:)]

Yeah, that's lucky! There's some pretty steep stairs going straigth down from a viewpoint on a hill near where I live. Blasting down those stairs with those mini skis without anybody getting hurt, that's kind of lucky too, I guess! Smile [:)]

Simon,

I was in the same position last year - checking this GB out only after it had gotten off to a 40-something page start.  When October came around this year, I was on the lookout.  It's been fun - and probably will be for a while yet.  Its good to get to know people through their posts in this GB and also in personal posts.  I heartily recommend it.

Hey guys, sorry for not having been around much lately.  Life has been pretty busy for me lately and what little free time I have had I've been spending on several armor projects.  Once I get those finished I'll get to work on the Avenger.  Cool [8D]

Here is another WIP update on the Thunderstreak (RoG 1:48), a super build thus far!

Everyone's build looks so great thus far, I feel kind of out of place!

Brian - Are you kidding ? - That looks awesome !

I've been wondering about some of the real foil models I've seen in other threads and in your post above.  Do you use a special foil with an adhesive backing ?  Or do you use regular kitchen foil with some type of adhesive applied to the model or the foil ?

And another question - If you make a mistake and you have to replace some of the foil, are you required to shout out: "Aaaargh !... Foiled Again !"

I know - pretty lame - but I couldn't help myself.

Looking great, Brian! Nice work with the foil! Love to see it done!

Chris, I think BMF have an adhesive backing.

Brian, looks great so far! Look forward to seeing some more... nice job on the BMF.

Brian can answer the question better than me, but there is an adhesive just for metal foil sold by Microscale (people who sell microsol & microset). Its called Micro Metal Foil Adhesive;whether you can use other types of glue is unknown to me, but i know close to nothing :)

article from FSM:

Brian, again, nice job, look forward to the end product!

Cheers

Thanks for the kind words, Chris!  What you see is plain old kitchen foil (the cheap kind from Wally World), and I use gilder's size (a liquid adhesive) to apply it.  MicroMark doies make a metal foil that is self adhesive, but it is a bit pricey for my taste.

Fortunately for me, it is not obligatory to make like Snidely Whiplash, or I would be saying that about every 5 mins Banged Head [banghead] !  Actually, that was a pretty good one!  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Truth be known, it is far easier to fix a goof with foil than it is to repair a problem with AlClad or Metallizer paint, and I think it's easier to apply.  I encourage everyone who likes nmf to give it a try on and old or cheap kit (my first was a PM 1:72 AT-11)!

Brian,

Is "gilders size" a generic name for the type of adhesive ?  Or is it a brand name ?

Is it something I could pick up at any home depot type place - or a craft shop - or is it something that I'd have to get from a specialty store or catalog ?

Hey, Chris,

That is the generic name for the adhesive, the trade name I use is Old World Gold Leaf Adhesive Size, I buy it at Craft Warehouse, but I believe that JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, etc. also sells it or similar products.  It's also available on line.  Mine cost a whopping $2.59 for a 2 fl. oz. bottle, and I have done six a/c so far, including an AMT 1:72 B-47E.  This stuff goes a long ways.....Shock [:O]

I've started to concentrate a little more on the F-16 these days - so here's an update

Three different greys on this baby.  The topside is gunship gray and neutral gray.  The underside is mostly light ghost gray with neutral gray surfaces on some fins.

Brian,

That F-84 is coming along real nice.  I think the foil idea is perfect for this kit.  That gold leaf adhesive is what I bought when I did my 1/144 B-47 in foil.  It takes some patience and a lot of trial and error but when it's done right, it is an unbeatable look.  Can't wait to see your finished build.

Hi, Steve!

Thanks for the kind words and the kit Cool [8D] !  This the first newer RoG kit I have done and I am VERY impressed with the fit & finish!  I am going to try and get time to do a few update pics later or first thing a.m. to post!  It's been a great build so far!

Well, as promised, here are the final update pics for the F-84F Thunderstreak.  I have not decided whether or not to dull cote it or leave it shiny;  as a show bird, I would guess that it would have been pretty clean and well maintained, but I would like to hear from you all on that point.  Many of you have had a tremendous amount of experience  with this type a/c, so what is your recommendation?

Bossman - good looking bird so far, neat crisp paint job

brain44 - nice job on the F-84F .. problem with the foil, hard to photograph due to the shine! The only construction small issue I can see with my newbie eyes are seams on the external bombs (left one to the front, for example). I know I had a battle with the external fuel tanks of my P-51D... I have switched to Tenax for such jobs, in order to get a "weld" instead of a "bond". I also invested in Flexi-files to be able to sand rounded corners and items. Gerald (HawkeyeHobbies) published a tutorial on "seams", let me find it...

/forums/882350/ShowPost.aspx

I plan on trying his ideas in my next builds....

Again, nice job on the bird! Cheers, James

Brian,

I don't know what to tell you about dull - vs - shiny .  You used a flash on these pics - right ?  I just wonder if that makes it look more shiny than it would normally look under natural light.

Nice job man - that's a really colorful bird, with some really long thin decals.  I bet they were a challenge.

James,

Thanks !   How 'bout them GIANTS !

Thanks for the good words, James!  I had partly cleaned up the fuel tank seams, got side tracked and forgot to finish them up.  "The camera doen't lie" is so true, they don't appear that way in person, so I have some more clean up to do!   The glare from the foil is an issue for photography, and I don't have a lighting set up for non-flash photography....Disapprove [V]

Thanks for the kind words, Chris!  Yeah, the flash does make it seem too shiny, I need to try a natural light shot outdoors and see what difference that makes!  The decal that was a REAL challenge was the tail colors - that was one big decal that was to wrap around the vertical stab - had to cut it into 4 pieces to apply it, since I had some seam work to do on the horizontal stab seams and couldn't pre-apply it.  The long colr flashes on the sides were already multi-part, so they only LOOK hard Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] !  If this kit is a good example of RoG quality these days, they get my Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] !

yeah GO GIANTS, I still scream EEEEEEE-li at random times :-)

I had similar problems with those seams, they look fine, feel fine but need more sanding, I had to redo mine 3 times! :)  Cheers, James

Brian, that F-84 looks real nice too!!!  Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]  I've never been brave enough to try foil myself yet so can't tell you what to do with the finish.  Congrats on a great job.

I've been working hard on the Me 410 but its slow progress as this particluar finemolds kits has some fit issues but I'm almost at the paint stage now.  Pics soon!!

Brian, the F-84 turned out real good.  I think it does look real shiny under the flash from your camera but it's probably not quite as shiny otherwise, right?  As a show bird, I'd leave it polished up rather than dulling it (and I'm not real sure how a clear flat coat would work with household aluminum foil).

DrewH, Razordws and Azgaron, thanks for the kind words, folks!  Don't be afraid of foiling an a/c, it is not as hard as it seems - if I can do it, you surely can!  A mistake is also easier to fix, believe it or not!

Down to the home stretch!!!  I was kinda surprised this kit is as good as it is!!  Found out one thing tho.......DO NOT USE TESTORS BOTTLE PRIMER!!!!!!  It will not stick!  But i persevered and her she is.  Waiting for the gloss coat for decaling.  Gonna wait putting on the bombs and slats until after.  I have a habit of knocking those offWhistling [:-^]  Since Jmart gave me a set of decals for the Shokaku Carrier with 3 different birds, i'm building a Kate and A Zero to go with this Val.  Enjoy and happy building!
