Looks like everyone's projects are progressing nice.  Thumbs Up [tup].

Haven't heard from the LHS in regards to my order.  Quess I will have to call next week.  Oh, well that gives me the chance to work on a couple of others to get them out of the way so I can start on the group builds.

Hello all, I haven't disappeared just two straight weeks of out of town business stuff. Last night I sealed the fuselage and attached the wings. Photos will come by the weekend.

Another stupid question...that I can't seem to find the answer for:

For early Hurricanes that are not sky, or black and white underneath, what color grey/white is it?

I am building a very early MK I from the 73sqn with the fixed pitch prop and no ventral fin. With decals on order from Iliad.

 Thanks again!

I'm pretty certain that the colour you're looking for is aluminium dope. This was the standard late-1930s colour for RAF fighters. Black and black/ white wings came in early in the war as an IFF aid for AA gunners:

I use Testors non-buffing aluminium metalizer for this, because it looks sufficiently different from real aluminium.

Cheers,

Chris.

Thanks Chris. I recently found that out about underside color on the early Spits and Hurries. I have had trouble finding references with the British Colors though. Those are a pair of really great looking Spitfires you have there, also!

I'm away on work right now but have made some progress during my time off. The cockpit is about 75% done or so. This Classic Airframes kit is no Eduard or Tamiya kit, I have spent a lot of time just cleaning the parts up and trying to add some details that are blatantly missing. There is actually no door detail on the inside of the cockpit, which I was surprised about. So I am working on adding some of that detail. When I get back in town and have a chance to work a bit more on it I'll post more progress pictures!

Thanks, Iffy. The two Spitfires are both 1/72. the one on the left, with the silver underside, is the Tamiya kit, with a 2-bladed prop from the old Hasegawa kit. The one on the right is the Airfix Spit Ia, with decals from the Encore re-boxing of the Heller Spit Ia/II.

References for underside colours, in particular, of RAF day fighters in the first year f the war are indeed difficult to find. there was a lot of variation. and Air Ministry orders were not infrequently ignored, or at least give a low priority, at squadron level. From May 1940, they had more important things to worry about. The only really relaible way is to find photos of the actual aircraft you're modelling.

As to the Hurricane, the panel that looks like a door on the starboard side of the cockpit isn't actually a door, in the same way that the similar panel on the port side of the Spitfire's cockpit is. It's a knock-out panel, for emergency use, when the pilot needs to get out of the plane quickly, taking his parachute with him. I'd have to check my references, but I don't think it had any door detail as such.

With very few exceptions, the best-known of which is probably the F-104, you get into a fighter aircraft's cockpit from the port side, because that's the way that a cavalryman mounts his horse.

Also, if you ever wanted to do a fabric wing Hurricane again, you might find life easier if you started with the Airfix kit, or Revell Gemany re-boxing (cheaper, better decals) of the Hasegawa kit, and used the Heritage Aviation

 http://www.heritageaviationmodelsltd.com/

resin fabric wing. They also do a white metal 2-bladed prop, as do Aeroclub, in resin. Specially since the CA kit seems to be OOP at the moment Smile [:)] .

Cheers,

Chris.

in English and Polish Smile [:)]

It is originated on the book written by Zamoyski in early 90ties but 3x more details and facts and pictures.

This book inspired me to build all aircrafts flown by "Kosciuszko Squadron" since Fontleroy and Cooper in 1919 (Albatros - Eduard, Ansaldo Balilla - Karaya ) up to latest Mig29 (Academy) converted to Nato.

Greg- Thanks my friend!  I bet buying aftermarket stuff there is considerably cheaper than buying it here.  WHat kind of a price difference is there between buying it here and buying it there from a company like Eduard?

Is there still room for late comers?

I'm kinda new at modeling having done less than a dozen kits but I'd like to be part of a group build. I know this group was supposed to start March 1 and here it is March 17th and it looks like a lot of you are just about finished. Is there still time for an amateur to join and finish?

What would your recommends be for a new guy to start off with?  I have two kits:

1/48 Hasegawa Mk.I "Finnish Air Force"

1/48 Monogram/Hasegawa  Mk II "Desert Hurricane" (this kit is from about 1990 when Hasegawa punched out some kits for Monogram and vise-versa - I don't really know the history on this or on how good the kits are. - Maybe I should just save this as a collectors item?

I imagine everything will be pretty much OOB as I have yet to venture into the AM neck of the woods, and, I admit, I'm more than a bit leery of trying to fit after market parts and doing carpentry and such on kits (call me a coward - I think I need more practice at the basics, like, I'm still having my wings separate, in places, when I take the clamps off!!

Anyway, if there's still room, I'd like to join.

Hi Poppie!Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

Its Greg's GB but I'm sure he would be more than happy to welcome you to this GB. Which kit would I recommend? Well, the Hasegawa is well detailed but it is unforgiving if you make any mistakes during the build process. I don't know much about the Monogram kit, but I've not heard any complaints about it. Check out the gallery on www.arcair.com that might provide some better insight on those kits.

Hope we see you often-enjoy your build!Thumbs Up [tup]

I put you in with Hasegawa kit. I know a bit Monogram kit. It is a very simple but no details kit - kind of a quick build, a lot of sanding may be involved. Do not expect much if you do not plan add a lot of aftermarket parts and ... a lot of work. On the other hand Hasegawa is pretty detailed and a very nice kit. nice panel lines (Monogram has raised panel lines  Sad [:(] )

I have Monogram kit but I would not recommend it.

Greg, Thanks for the advice. Actually, what I'm dealing with in fact, are two Hasewaga kits, one from 1990, and one  from 2003 (North America Release Dates at least).  I know what you mean about the Hasewaga kits being 'unforgiving'. I've done 5 x 1/48 Hase kits so far and I've had to tear apart something on everyone of them. My last project was a Spitfire MkV and I screw up the front office something fierce - it was way out of alignment. I had to spray it with de-bonder to separate the parts, soak the parts in Windex to get the paint off, weld the tiny parts back on that I had broken off in the process of taking the cockpit apart, and then start all over again - about a weeks work down the drain and it still doesn't look quite right.

I've learned that none of these kits can be called 'fast builds', at least, not if you want to do them right, but Hasegawa must surely be up there with the leaders for the 'Make haste slowly' award. (Don't ya just love those catchy little sayings?)

Interesting note: the 'Monogram/Hasegawa kit still has the price on it from 1990 - would you believe $20!!! My LHS gave me a price on a new release, 2003, Hase, and its $36.  Those are Cdn dollars too.  I think I'm going to buy the Monogram kit on general principal and keep it as a collectors model: I haven't been able to find another one on the net so I think I may have found a rare beastie that may someday be worth quite a bit more than it already is 'as is'.

But Oh the temptation, to build, it would look so good scattered under, over, around, and on top of my workbench, with little parts stuck to my arms, crushed into the carpet, chewed up by the dog, painted the wrong colour, covered in my Tenax fingerprints.........the beauty of it, the poetry, the sheer exhilerating grace and beauty of watching the decals dissolve in the Micro Sol......I'm just too weak to invest, to weak, to weak....
