Strike me off group build. Fell on the ice last night and broke bone in right hand. Surgery tomorrow morning. Numb right now with Xylocaine. Doing 'hunt and peck' typing. This will be a good time, at least, to do some research. How long laid up? don't know. Will talk to doc tomorrow pre-surgery. Sometimes ya can't win for losing.

Poppie- OMG, that is awful!  Hopefully surgery goes well, and you will be on the road to recovery soon.  The GB goes for a year, perhaps you might stick around while you're doing your research?

Oh Poppie, i really feel for you fella. In August i broke 4 bones in my right hand, thumping a wall (SWMBO's fault). Just the thought of what your going to have to go through, trying to shave with the wrong hand, cra@@ing using the wrong hand to err....you get the gist. Even just making a cuppa onehanded. Oh and getting dressed. Nightmare fella. I hope you arnt as incapacitated as i was.

I was just coming in to say that now that my tank is done I am getting ready to start my Hurricane.  Then I read poppie's bad news.  That's a tough break...oh man...sorry that was not intentional.  Let's say it just rotten luck.

I want to try something new I picked up in the armor area called the "hairspray technique" So I will be doing a Russian Hurricane in a distressed white wash… probably with fictitious markings.

Now I have to go back and see what everyones been up to.

WOW! - different story this morning with freezing worn off! Anyway, a quick update so you know where I'm at: doc says it was a matter of removing a couple of small bone chips and filing down the rough edges before they caused any damage . He laughed when I told him I needed to get back to modeling because, as he said, there was a small bone in my hand that was cracked, that he was going to glue together using basically the same CA as we use on our plastic. Neat. So now I am a model.  I'm pretty sore and bruised but I've got lots of motion in my thumb and forefinger to pick things up and grab things, just no strength in the grab. So, I'm going to start doing what I can at a real slow and careful pace.

Just so I know and to keep me from making any dumb mistakes, are there any ground rules for GB's posted anywhere? I'm referring to rules, protocol, etc other than just plain old fashioned good manners.  For instance, I just picked up that a GB runs for a year. What else should / could I know?

good news Poppie.

Rules? there are some basic rules: build a Hurricane (or two, or three ... Smile [:)]) and post picutres here not just for a finished kit but as WIP. Place you comments on other builds and most important have fun !

Here is my Hurricane Mk I (early) L2048. This is a Classic Airframes 1/48 scale.

It is not so detailed as Hasegawa kit but has some level of accuracy. I decided to do it OOB with but I changed my mind as soon as I removed cockpit parts from a sprue.

I used Eduard details and some wire to add a bit  and here it is

and I am in a process of closing the fuselage

I go with sections and use tenX7 on the edges. It is a very ... ucooperative kit and fitting is a primery problem. Plastic parts have a lot of flush and the mold seams to be a bit worn out (or it is an effect of a shortrun.

Thanks Greg,

I appreciate the help, but from the looks of your pictures, I may be in a lot of trouble for an amateur. The kit I bought is a Hasegawa 1/48 marked "Finnish Air Force". Now, I have no real interest in the Finnish Air Force but I have a set of AirFix 1/48 Hurry Plane decals for No. 32 Sqn RAF, Biggin Hill, July 1940, and I figured I'd just have to do a quick research on the camo and use the RAF decals for a quick conversion. From the looks of your plane, I may have a completely different kit.  Let me describe the kit:

It came in 11 sprues lettered A, Q,S,R,J,W,G,V,L x2,K and P with 123 parts (not including duplicates). The fuselage is in two sections, a foreward engine compartment and the rest of the fuselage from the pilots seat back. The forward section has a piece that has to be 'trimmed off' for it to fit.  Now, it may be that you have already joined the two sections of the fuselage and if so, wow, what a great joining job, I can't see a seam anywhere. On the other hand, I think I have an 'end run' or 'leftovers' run kit of some sort.  I do know its a lot older than most, but, I'm thinking, I've bought an 'odd ball' kit that I'm going to have trouble getting am parts and such for.

This is just a photo of the box.  I can't figure out how to attach pictures to my post.

PHOTOBUCKET

Sorry to be off topic but I really want to participate and I cannot figure out how to get pic onto my posts from photobucket. ( I tried using image cave but my wife has it locked up and full of pics of our grandchildren).  Would someone take a minute and tell me what it is I have to do.  I have an account set up. Now what's the procedure to get my pics from photobucket onto this forum?  Thanks ever so much guys.  Sorry to be a pest but I'm just missing something on their website I guess.

yes, you have a diferent kit. I use Classic Airframes kit. It is the only "early" Mk I available on the market in this scale (as far as I know)

Hasegawa has a very nice kit - I plan to make one for my 303 Squdron project. Hasegawa kit is pretty well detailed and nicely engineered.

Not too many people use decals Out of the box. Most of the time decals are aftermarket. I use mostly Techmod decals due to my interest in Polish aviation.

To put your pictures on the post you have to provide a link to your picutre. The easiest way is to get an account at photobucket.com, upload pictures to photobucket.com and than use the link to place it within your post here.

for example:

is simply the tags "IMG" in square []

image link

and than a closing tag "/IMG" also in brackets []

Hey Poppie - did a bit of research, that "W" sprue you have to model the Finnish AF bird (different prop and spinner) appears to be more in common with a Tropical Hurricane or one of the other export versions - may not be accurate for a British plane(?). Other than that, you should be able to fit any AM that's designed for a Hasegawa Mk.I Hurricane no problem as that's the only alteration.

As for "older" or "end run", you should know that kit 09682, the latest Has-Hurricane (‘Mediterranean Theatre’) is made from the exact same molds as the kit you have...just with a newer box, newer box art, and different decals. Wink [;)]

Hope this helps! Big Smile [:D]

Well, just snooping to see how everyong is doing.  Great progress by everying.

Was at the LHS on Saturday to check on my order an pickup some paint for two projects I have on the go.  Low and behold, the owner advised that my order is not in yet.  Almost two months.  His paint supply is really low.  He checked last week and the company stated that they should have two shipments in in about a weeks time.  He hopes the order will be in there along with his paints.

Welcome on board Poppie

OMIGOD!  First time too!   Should be rolling and keeping up from here.  Thanks again guys.

I appreciate the info on this kit being a "Tropical" export. I don't want to put out any money on aftermarket parts on something that isn't right from the get-go. I think I'll make this model up OOB for the sake of learning and practice, I've only made about 6 x 1/48 kits, for heavens sake, and order another kit that I can do some decent work on. After all, I've got a year.  So, one handed and all, here I go........and let's just see what happens. Should be as much fun as watching a "one armed paper hanger"  -  to think, I used to laugh at that!

It's tiny because I took it with my camera set at  1M. I'll see how much I can blow it up.

Poppie,

when you take a picutre set the resolution whatever you can (Higher = better) however for the purpose of this forum the 800x600 is plenty - 1024x800 is max what I do for FSM forum. Anything larger will tkae a lot of time to download - not practical

WHen getting the link from photobucket use the last (fourth ) link - it has already place a picutre into the IMG tag brackets - ready to paste into a post

Hope this worked

Cornwallis, or should I say "Cornholeis", is a long way behind me too, but I'm retired out of CF;s Maritime, as a Padre. Long story.  Enlisted as an ordinary seaman, got my commission,  but served as an exchange officer with US forces in the brown water navy, got shrapnel in my spine, 100% disability. It was funny for awhile because I was drawing full disability, and full pay and allowances while I attended grad school and seminary then continued to collect disability and full pay as Capt!! I really and truly regretted having to finally have to take full retirement as things just got too hard to handle. Couldn't take morphine and do the job too. Ah well, as a veteran, I'm treated very, very, well.

TITLE: Aftermarket products.

I know I'm really niave, but, please bear with me as I'm trying to learn my way around this hobby. I've been looking at the Squadron catalogue and trying to find aftermarket parts for the Hasagewa Hurricane and not having any luck. Should I be looking elsewhere? By model number instead of name? I've ordered my next Hurricane (already!) and I intend to try doing a little bit of 'sprucing up'on my next build. Could I ask your advice on what would be the easiest area, or should I say parts, for an amateur to start learning on. I don't want to see my money go down the drain just because I bit off more than I could chew.  I do believe in that old saying:"Make haste slowly", I just want to be ready.  I figure if I order now, I can start trying to picture things in my head and figuring out just how I'm going to do things. It's going to be about 3 -4 weeks before my kit comes in so I have lots of time to catalogue browse, - I just don't know the names of the catalogues or web-sites.  Would you guys please give me a boost?  Thanks again, and again, and again,  Poppie
