Today in History we will mark the date of Summit's first time ever using PE parts. 30 + yrs of Model Building OOB and look what happened after joining this GB. HaHa sucker - welcome to our world; a world filled with hours of searching the internet for every last bit of aftermarket parts for your latest kit.  Hours spent folding tiny little boxes made from micronic tin and then gluing itty-bitty knobs and handles on them.

Next comes the resin infatuation and after that, well, let's just say goodbye to your immortal soul Evil [}:)]

My wife has always thought I'm slightly loopy for as she says "playing with model aeroplanes".

Sean, face it you're doomed.  There is no going back from the dark side once you've crossed over Evil [}:)].  Now you will have the fun of CA sticking your fingers together while you try and manoeuvre near microscopic PE parts into place.Laugh [(-D]

Well so far, all I`ve managed to do was cut out the dumb molded "flaps" on undersid. Used the PE flap. Not glued yet, will wait till most is done. They bend VERY easily.Judging by the no. of post the last 2 days, I`m not the only one not getting a lot done........Harv

Ok guys, need some info and cant find it anywhere. on the underside between the exaust, there are 3 small  round "openings" just behind the cowling. (you can see them in pic above post). Can anyone tell me what they are? Are they more exaust or what? Thanks............Harv

Harv, I always thoght they were access plugs for service.  But I went through all  books I have ~ And actually found someone using them . A Marine Bore Sighting a Corsair. Looks like they were for using a sighting tool.

I've done a little work on my Corsair today.  I had the original engine and prop from the previous attempt, but decided to try to make them look a little better.  I cleaned up the prop and sprayed it with a coat of Alclad, and also did some extra detailing on the crankcase front with wire and styrene.  Here's how they look today:

Thanks Summit!  You bettcha, plug wires are next!  I just drilled the 72 holes for all of 'em, and after painting am gonna wire it up.  As for the engine, I say go for the grime!  Radials just scream out for it. Thumbs Up [tup]

Last night, I started wiring the crankcase, a marathon paint session, and this morning have been busy finishing the plug wires and more painting.  Next time, I am gonna do a plane with a 7 cylinder single plug head engine!  This thing has 18 cylinders, two plugs per jug, aaarrrggghhh!  That's a lotta holes and wires.  But, I like the way it looks now! Big Smile [:D]

Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]  I forgot what I muttered to myself when I read you were going to do that..Wink [;)] What type of wire did you use ?

Sure does look Great though, Are you going to have the cowling cover up all this Hard work now or have a Mechanic working away ?  Frank I found some really nice PE Tools in a box of Model RR stuff I was sorting the other day. Let me know if you could use them..

Summit,

Why, thank you very much!  Looking at it, I think I need to add a little more paint detail to the wires to make them stand out a little more.  As they are, they kinda blend in with the rest of the engine.  And yes, she's gonna get covered up with the cowl but at least she'll look great inside the front!  The wire I used was .15mm copper wire.  Can't remember where I got it from, but I am starting to run low after this job so need to find some more.  Anyone have any ideas where to find very small copper wire?

As for those PE tools, I would love some of those!  Though, I have to admit, I wouldn't use it on the Corsair.  I am (slowly) working on a dio with a P-40 and P-39 in a maintenance corner.  Would I be able to get those from you for that project?  That would be awesome if I could! Big Smile [:D]

Frank,

Looking good,I was going to be building OOB but figured with a year to do the build I'll try to add a few bits and pieces and adding extra detail to the crank shaft was one of the tasks I'm gonna try.

So thanks for posting your photos as they will help heaps..

Cheers

Sean,

Here's a link to a fantastic reference site, Prime Portal.  These photos I got from there:

For radial engines, I usually paint the cylinders a light tannish grey and drybrush silver onto them to give them a metallic look.  The crankcase on mine was painted a lightened blue-grey.  HTH! Thumbs Up [tup]

Here are a few shots of some radial engines. These are Wright Cyclones from B-17's but generally other models are very similar.

A front view, note the ignition wiring harness  has been removed:

Here's a rear view:

Here's a shot from an engine in the plane. Note the black pushrod tubes, the chrome wiring harness cover, and the fabric insulated spark plug wires.:

Finally, here's a shot of the engine peeking out from behind the cowl and spinner of a modified F2G Corsair:

Hope you find these helpful.
