Well I come across an old polishing kit from work they were going to throw out and I said hang on a minute!!!! lol It is made by Micro-Surface finishing products, acrylic restoration kit. have no idea the cost or where to get it but it comes with a small bottle of compound as well, works pretty good! Haven't actually tried it on clear parts yet. Might want to try a panel beater's supply house or something, they have extremely fine grit emory papers that might do the trick as well as polishing compounds. HTH!Thumbs Up [tup]

Hi Richie,

Do you know if there's anywhere in Aus you can get a polishing kit? I asked at the big city store a couple of years ago and they said they'd heard of them but there was no point stocking them as they'd never sell them (except, presumably, to me...)

Yes indeed, get the three of us round the same table of competition models and we'd sure get into a case of Advanced Modeller Syndrome! Hey, maybe I'll see you at the hobby tent round the aviation flea market at the next Avalon!

Sorry you won't be able to come over for the expo Mike!!! Would be a grand meeting of the minds!!!! Your paint prob, hmmmm, maybe try the polishing kit anyways and the panel lines that do come through might be subdued with a pastel pencil maybe?Confused [%-)] Might give it a tad of weathering effect as well? Orange peeled paint really can't be helped unless you rub it out or strip and try again. Anyways good luck with it and hope my My 2 cents [2c] helps a bit!Make a Toast [#toast]

Hi Darren and Richie,

Sorry I can't make it interstate for the Expo, but I'll be here too, no doubt finally applying some finishing techniques to this confounding bird. I've been wondering about maybe trying a polishing kit to reduce the orangepeel effect of the paint, but with an older with with raised panel lines they would no doubt go through to grey long before the paintjob was acceptable. Hmmm, what to do...?

Cheers,

Mike

Hi there guys, I was wondering if this build is going to stop dead now the date is passed?  I ask this as I am just getting back into modeling after another long break and would like to pull my F4U-5N of the shelf of doom and finish it up as part of this build.

Frank thanks for the tute on the walkways that should come in very handy.

Cheers

I posted this over at the FAAGB, butr thought I would share it here as well in case anyone wanted to see it. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Managed to get some work done on the F4U-2N this weekend.  Started the paint chipping on the forward parts of the wings, and also sprayed the wingwalks.  Someone asked me on the last one I built how I did it, so here's a quick toot.

First, I measured (using the kit decals) how wide the strip needed to be.  Then, I went through my references to see where exactly on the wing it should be, as well as how long it needed to be.  I then cut a long strip of Tamiya tape the width of the anti-skid strip, and placed it on the wing and corresponding flap portion.

I then masked right up to the pieces of tape, like this:

Removing the center piece reveals exactly where the strip should be:

I then mixed up a very dark gray, and thinned it with straight 91% alcohol so it would dry very quickly.  I sprayed it a higher than normal pressure (about 25 psi) and after it was covered, I mixed up a lighter shade and misted it onto the center of the area, simulating the traffic and wear across them.  Removed the tape and voila!  Painted anti-sakid strips in about 20 minutes time. Wink [;)]

Hi simpilot,

Yes indeed -- I would love to post these projects when they do mature and get some feedback along the way. You're right about the friendships, I've made some in the Hunters and BoB GBs which have endured!

Ah, well if fishing line shrinks into place I'll have to give it a go, I have some 2 lb line here and planes to rig. I must try the Ezy-Line too, it was certainly expensive enough!

The PT-20, now there's a subject I would love to do, with Talon Acrylics and polishing powders, and rig the stays too. I photpghraphed the real deal at Avalon Airshow many years ago.

Okay, I shan't be going far! Oh, BTW, check out my blog (address in my signature line) for news on those Aztec decals (look for the second post, down the bottom of the page).

Cheers.

Mike sorry to hear about the setbacks but would still like to see them!!!!!! I'm sure all of us will still be posting on here just to say how's it going and all. Enduring friendships have been made here and it won't just fade away! As for fishing line? Yes it does shrink in the same way! A plus is that fishing line comes in different strengths, thus, different diameters!!!! I rigged the old Testors PT-20 with a couple different tests and the effect was great!!! Also had a homemade foil adhesive to put a Polished side foil finish to it!!!!!!! Would love to build another!!! Anyway nother story!!!Big Smile [:D] Don't stray too far away!!!

Hi all,

Dupes -- wonderful job! I love that finish and she really looks the part!

I took a look for invisible mending thread locally but we don't seem to have it here, there are some more places I can try. Does monofilament fishing line tighten when heated the same way?

I'm not gonna finish this one... If I'd got a decent finish on the paint I'd have completed the Hasegawa 1:72, but somehow I just couldn't get motivated again (a shame after the scratchbuilding I did for the racks), and the special decals from Aztec for the Tamiya 1:48 haven't come out yet... Too bad, I would have liked to add the badge to my collection.

Never mind, I'm sure there'll be more Corsair builds coming along in future, and it's been a great experience watching all you master modellers do your thing with this great plane!

Cheers,

Mike/TB379

Just a few little things to touch up & I should be able to take pics of the final product.

I have a question though....the I.F.F. lights under the wing....what is the correct sequence, Fore to Aft?

Thanks in advance y'all.

I have been working very slowly on the Corsairs, hoping to get one of 'em sealed up tonight for some more weathering to come.  Still trying to decide whether to add the flaps first them add the satin, or satin coat them all them attach.  Hmmm- decisions, decisions...

I went to the LHS last night looking for some (I use the term "LHS" very loosely in this case), but they didn't have anything. Looks like I'm heading over to Wal-Mart tonight! Thanks Simpilot! Big Smile [:D]

"Smokey black", eh? Is that already the right color for aerials? Or not dark enough?

Dupes the stuff can be had from just about anywhere!!!! A good place to start would be Wal-Mart in the sewing section, or I found mine at th etiny sewing section in a supermarket, even a Hancock Fabrics, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc. Comes in clear and a smokey black color. HTH!!Make a Toast [#toast] Stretching sprue is as simple as holding a piece above acandle about 2-3 inches and rolling it back and forth, when it starts to go limp, move it away from the heat and slowly but steadily pull apart, practice till you got the right diameter!!! for hair fine stuff pull really fast!!! btw don't use liquid cement!, Don't ask!Blush [:I] HTH 2!!!

Hey Dupes, lovely build! I use 'invisible thread' for aerial wires. Tailors & dressmakers use this to mend clothes, its a very fine plastic thread. It's handy because you can glue it on loose with CA and make it taut with a heat source (I'm a smoker, so I use a lit cigarette, but an exacto blade heated with a candle works too) then paint it.

Hey guys, thanks for looking! I agree totally about the aerials...after I put them on, I said pretty much the same thing to myself about them being too thick. Made them out of .009 guitar string, which was the smallest stuff I had on hand. I think I can get them off, so hopefully I can find some smaller gauge wire, or learn how to stretch sprue!

Frank - for real? Intermediate blue? I must have completely spaced out the color callout when I was looking at the Tamiya instructions. Hooo boy. Dunce [D)]
