Hi all,

Here's the Hasegawa 1:72 F4U-1D WIP pic promised:

Photobucket" border="0" />

There are a couple of aluminum and tire black touchups needed around the landing gear, and I'm thinking of cutting and extending the tail gear from -1A standard to -1D. I have a pretty good idea how I'll fabricate the wing racks too. Promodeller 'Dark Dirt' wash was used on the landing gear and engine. The prop was sprayed Tamiya flat black but looking at references shows a definite lustre to the blades, so I brushed Micro Satin over them. This is my first time using the product and I was very impressed. No brush strokes and it dried in moments, without lifting the paint (I tested it on scrap stock first). I might put another coat on over the decals. I was going to add the yellow stencil data decals on the blades but I've yet to find a single reference photo of a Corsair in 1945 which shows them...

Hopefully I'll be doing main assembly tomorrow night, and the reviews I've read today say she goes together with good fit.

Six days left in the month -- I reckon I have a good chance of nabbing a badge!

Cheers,

Mike/TB379

Thanks simpilot -- it's great to be able to contribute and I really want that badge for my collection!

I did some background checking. I read the kit review in the Detail & Scale volume and it turns out this is the -1A kit with minor modifications. She needs two small braces painting in on the canopy, possibly elimination of the flap step, though it was common to many -1Ds, and the major modification is of course the fact the Hasegawa kit comes without rocket stubs or bomb racks. I had a quick Google but it doesn't look like anybody makes these as AMs (another case of a kit that could use a hand from the AM guys but is too old for them to bother with), so I guess I'll take a shot at scratching them, guided by the Tamiya 1:48 parts.

I also found this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfukLK8-Vu8

Take a look -- excellent production, even if the comment about painting the bird gray instead of blue seems remarkably odd! The video insert of a restored Corsair strutting her stuff at an airshow just reminds me how crazy I am about this aircraft and the fact I've never actually seen one to this day (not sure if there are any flying in this country at this time!)

I should have a subassemblies pic later, I just panel washed the landing gear and engine. Hopefully I'll be putting it together by tonight.

Cheers,

Mike/TB379

Sean, my friend, you shouldnt be surprised. My $20 model has about $100 worth of AM!!..I`m funny like that.... I dont think I have a single model in my stash without atleast some PE. Most have more than what I paid for the kit. My wife just rolles her eyes when ever I buy ANYTHING any more!! But my 1/32F-4 just has a cockpit...so far!. Let see my corsair has AM prop, AM wheels & wellwells, AM cockpit,AM flaps, AM engine, but the rest is OOB!.......Harv

Dave - You are Very Much Welcome. I am Happy to see them put to use. The pics look good ! Remember to take your time ~ as I always get real excited that close to the end of a build, and muck something up.

Harv - Quit looking at stuff on ebay and get to work on that corsair  Wink [;)] Looking real good there buddyThumbs Up [tup] I am surprised at all the aftermarket pieces you are using. Approve [^]

Make a Toast [#toast] Sim -- You are correct Sir...It's a 1969 Dodge 440 6-pack. Friend on mine that comes over on the weekends prefers autos to military stuff.

Sim & T-Bolt -- thanks for the kind words. I was so happy when I got this kit off E-Bay for a decent price...and when I looked it over, I thought "Ehh, I can do this." but when I finally dove in, I realized what "everyone" was talking about regarding the Trump. kits. UGH! Looks good...Yes....a bear to build...YES!

Few more decals, and this one goes into the "history" books. (although I might add the bombs or the rockets...not sure, many kits have I had in this excursion.)

Thanks again fellas.....Oh and I must mention this....none of this would have been possible if it weren't for Summit, (Sean), who had the decals for this bird after I discovered mine were shot to Hades, and I put out an SOS.  THANKS SUMMIT!!!

Hartmann -- Tremendous work on a difficult kit! Bravo!

Well, guys, there's no way in the world I'll have time to devote to finishing the Tamiya -1D, even assuming I went with OOB markings. The FAS-219 markings will be commercially available in a couple of months, so I'll hang on for them and finish this kit as planned.

Instead, with a week to go, I'd like to start something new. (Is that okay, Gig? I know it's late in the day, but I can field a new project!) I say new, this old Hasegawa 1:72 -1D has been in my stash for at least ten years. It somehow became detached from its storage carton and has been lying around. Lately it's been whispering build me! So I've given in. Assuming it's okay to field this one for the GB, it'll be quick and dirty, straight OOB and I'll finish her in some old Superscales (the kit decals have yellowed badly and were never all that great by modern standards).

Photobucket" border="0" />

She's the early kit, raised panel lines and all. I considered rescribing them but, hey, this is supposed to be quick! There aren't many, and they don't show up in photos of the real thing against midnight blue very much. Here's the parts:

Photobucket" border="0" />

The markings I'll use are Superscale 72-511, a sheet I took a subject from many years ago, I think it might have been for another example of the same kit. My subject will be VMF-511, USS Block Island, July 1945.

Photobucket" border="0" />

I assembled and painted the cockpit last night, and have done prep painting on the engine and other subassemblies. Does anyone know if the landing gear and wheels for such a squadron should be gloss white or natural metal in mid-'45?

Hope it's okay to launch this one so late!

Best wishes, all,

Mike/TB379

Dave, your welcome! Glad Sear came through for you. The build is shapeing up great! I agree, the cowling paint is much more natual than the decal!  I`ve gotten a little more done on mine also. No pics yet.Working on the wings and wheelwells.........Harv

Hey there y'all, here's some pics of where I'm at. the pics were taken at the end of an evening in the "shop". Some more decals have been added since these were taken. (just the snakes & some bitty ones are needed.)

Harv, thanks, but Summit was ablke to assist, decals he provided were in pristene condition.

proof that I actually painted the cowling rather than putting the decal on for the maroon color...actually used "British Crimson".

almost done with this.....I do believe that I will not attempt another Trumpeter with a radiasl engine anytime in the near future though....that's a model all on it's own.

Thanks again Harv.

Yep, working away! Glued the bottom center section of wing this morning. Not a great fit for sure. A little work and it will be ok. Yesterday started on the left resin dropped flaps. Now they are gona take some work and some styrean strip to cover up some opening on trailing edge. Let me know what you think.........Harv

Hey there y'all...need some assistance....ran into a snag that I did not see comming...the decals for my Trump. 1/32 F4U-4 are completely FUBAR. Are there any of you that might have done this model not as the Death Rattlers? (but still have the decals?) that is what I am doing, and the cowling has already been painted for this a/c.

The issue with the decals is that when I soak them in H2O part of the decal stays stuck and tears...(now I like jigsaw puzzles, but this is beyond my capabilities.)

I'd be more than happy to pay for shipping.

Please Help....I'd hate to come this far for this to fowl me up.

Hey Richie,

It's not that I want to shut it down, but there are only so many people working on kits.  Without fresh blood, it's going to die on it's own anyway.  Look at page 1 of this thread and see how many people signed up versus how many are actually building.

If you want, you can be our official attack dog and remind those who haven't built anything yet, that there's a limited time left to get in on it Big Smile [:D]

I know the whole extension thing goes against the original idea of a GB (build a certain subject in a certain amount of time), but I think there's too much good info in here to just let it shut down.

I have to agree, does it really have to shut down? Will have to see what happens there.

Alfaspud -- what can I say, you do the hobby proud. Not only a top notch Cordsair but you knock out a realistic diorama base, figure conversions and all. My cap is off to you as a master modeller!

Now, about this extension... I'd go for it as well. Extenuating circumstances, not that I couldn't take a crack at it, but what with real life ganging up on me (16 weeks to PhD submission and I don't know the answer to my question yet -- arrgghhh!!!!) but it turns out there are some top quality decals coming out in the near future that would really simplify things. I'll wait on those, and if necessary finish this bird in kit markings for the badge, then do another as a special later.

Cheers,

Mike/TB379

Absolutely incredible, Keith, absolutely incredible Bow [bow]

Now don't forget, guys - there's officially only 3 weeks left in this GB.  But if we vote on it, I don't see why it can't be extended.
