The Official F4U Corsair Group Build 4/01/08 - rolling end date

  Looks like I need to BUMB!!.

  Well spent the good part of the day cleaning up and moving my work benches around and getting ready to start BUILDING again!! YAHOO. Maybe this week. But heres my acomplishment.........Harv

Keith-

On those gun stains, perhaps a little thinned Tamiya NATO black or similar sprayed lightly on the leading edge to "fan out" the stain?  Might help blend the individual streaks together.  I love the filth on your aircraft, looks perfect in my eyes.  That's EXACTLY what an island Corsair looks like in my eye.  Exhaust stains and tires are especially well done.  Also like the pristine bomb, as it would not have been weathered at all.  A very nice touch.

I'm not happy with the gun stains, I might do something with them. The base has been started, wooden boards on a sandy beach with some clippings swiped from my friendly local garden center for some tropical plants. I'm trying to source some 1/48 items to go with it, ammo boxes, fuel cans etc.

That is a stunning Corsair!  Love your weathering, top notch work by golly.  Can't blame the ground crew, that's what I would be doing too!

Hi fellas, another Corsair nearly finished. I just need to build a base for it, I fitted the wrong canopy too, so I need to paint up the other one provided in the kit and fit it. Also need to flatcoat some of it. Happy enough with the results, sorry about the pics, will take some better ones when completely finished.

Sean- As soon as you mentioned the receiver batteries, I knew right where this was heading!  I lost a 1/4 scale Extra 300 to a faulty battery pack once.  In fact, that was my last ever R/C flight.  The engine spooled up after a low inverted pass.  I had just rolled her upright when the engine sped up.  She started a gradual climb as the speed picked up.  Then, a slow descent.  Behind a hill she went.  Towards the 4-lane highway.  OMG, was I freaking out.  After a few seconds, I stood there dumbstruck waiting the hear the screech of tires and the screams.  Luckily, it crashed nose first at full power about four feet from the highway entrance ramp.  Not much left of her, but luckily no one was hurt.  That was my last R/C flight.

I do miss it though.

Scott - Nice build on the 1/32 , you really spiffed a plain Jane kit into the "Bell of the Ball" ! I really like the Pilots detail. That is a Nice Collection of Corsairs. They do have "Programs" out there to help with the addiction if you need it.

I built the Top~Flight Corsair several years ago when I lived in Las Vegas. I had taken it outside to fire it up and taxi it around the yard and driveway. My son came out so I was playing with it more then I should have. (somewhere in this story I need to put in the Batteries were not fully charged)  You know the fun stuff - opening it up and getting airborne bunny hops , spinning around in circles. Well I gave it full throttle to hear the 4 chycle roar again before shutting it down and cleaning it up. Except the planes battery did not have enough juice to retract the throttle. So here it is wide open making a circle each time gaining speed and distance. The look on my sons face was sheer terror as he thought it was going to clip him. Mine was sheer terror as I thought it was going to clip the Wifes Porsche

I dropped the radio and tried to grab it by the tail feathers as it went by and missed. The next arc would be collision with the car- I stepped out and kicked the wing and spun it the other direction which sent it rolling minus wing parts for the house into the rose bush. That stalled the engine - Broke the prop and busted the other wing. My son looked at me and said "Wow Dad - Moms gonna be mad about her Flowers"  What a circus that was. I started another one but have not finished it since moving. 

Scott- Stunning build there!  That pilot looks like a miniature sculpture, very real indeed!  I must find one of these kits!  

I must say, you are alright in my book.  Any chap with that many Corsairs in his display area AND an R/C Corsair must be OK.

Richie- Congrats on the publication!  I'll be looking for that tip, better be a good one Mister.

Now it is added to my collection of Corsairs.  The one to the right up against the wall is the old Monogram 1/48 scale kit I built over 30 years ago. Can you tell I happen to like the Corsair?

And here is my latest RC project that I finshed about 2 yrs ago.  A Pica 1/8 fun scale.

Well everyone, here are the pics of my finished 21 Century Toys 1/32 Corsair.  It has been a fun kit considering I had to fabricate my own gear doors and use aftermarket landing gear.

The pilots in these kits are really well detailed.

Well if there wasn't it would be a fitting name to add using a bit of artistic license! LOL at the model expo last year in Melb, OZ, I saw one of the 5 or 6 Boomerangs there with the name 'DILLIGAFF'.

I sure do!  Great to see that one back on your bench.  Bummer about the loose pieces, but like you said- most prolly wouldn't be seen anyway.

Funny yours is back on the bench the same day mine got put away for a bit.  They have really been fighting me, and tonight I tried to mask the canopies and attach them.  I had given them two coats of Future, but the windscreen on one of them fogged anyway when I tried to CA it to the fuselage.  Also, the Eduard masks for this version are POS's.  I have had some from them that fit perfectly, others look like they took a wild guess with them- these are the latter.  The -1D masks fit quite well (except the top pane of the sliding portion).  So, I decided to pack them up for a bit.

I'll really enjoy watching you progress with yours.

Frank - Do you remember this one ?

Eh - lots of PE missing from inside . The pilot will only be able to fly in circles as it only has one rudder pedal now. I am not concerned with that anymore as I cant see them down in there anyway. hmmmph I still have a small zip-lock baggie of little stuff thats needs re~attached.  The flaps are kinda doing their own thing now, and the tail wheel has serious issues (notice the epoxy stir stick) But it has made its way from the back of the Top Shelf back down to the bench. (Like Wheezer from Toy Story)

Actually, I cut all the little brackets by hand with a hobby knife.  Just about drove me crazy doing it!   Wait, I think I was already crazy.  Does that mean I'm OK now?   Thanks again.

Keith- Thanks, mate!  I am seriously loving your weathering, how did you do it?  It really has that worn, dingy look without being overdone.  I love it!  PLEASE tell me how to make mine look like yours!

What a fantasic build, your paintjob is just breathtaking! On the wing mounting, I don't think you have anything to worry about -- seriously! The joints look equivalent to heavy panel lines, which is exactly as they should. I managed to line up my left wing to about the same degree of accuracy (you know the feeling, when you pass that indefinable point where your built-in error-detector says 'okay, it passes muster'), but the right is still lying next to the beast and mocking me with my inability to get it correct... One day I'll tackle the job, wrestle it to the ground and hog-tie it, but I think I'll finish a few other builds first!

Mike! I did have the same issue with the wings as you when i did glue them. The joints aren't great and the flash photography makes them look a lot worse than normal light, but I'll have to try and do something with them. Anyway heres a few more pics.

Frank, that is some cool detailing you've done, I want my engine looking like yours, can i post you the bits??

Working on the wheels and undercarraige next.

  That is some seriously crazy, fine work you've done there.  I can't believe that you actually added all those little actuators in the cowling flaps and then ran a wire through them.  Do you have a cutting jig of some sort?  I can't fathom how you made them all exactly the same size.
