I've been really remiss in participating in this GB, but I have gotten a small amount of work done on my KT...  but not too much as the 251/17 I'm working on in the Halftrack GB is taking a lot more time and effort than I thought.

Anyhow, I've gotten this far- the turret is mocked up, the upper hull isn't yet glued down and nothing is anywhere near ready to paint.  At some point I'm going to have a massive painting session in which three different models are going through the AB booth.

Moose421- that PE looks AWESOME!

panzerguy: Hey, I think we're somewhat like neighbors now...you live in New Hampshire right?  Where 'bouts?

wing_nut: I have Nationals planned for August...one major event at a time.  Where is the show you mentioned?

Dre:  Looking good so far, nice zim, is that AM?...plenty of time left for this GB too, don't sweat it.  I like the trio AB painting thing...except for the cleaning part.

You were on the road when it happened SMJ, but your one year FSM anniversary flew right by! Notice you've updated the locale...I'm not sure I would call New Hampshire a "neighbor" of NY. Wink [;)]

dupes: One year anniversary, heh?!...Party [party]

I live in Northeast NY and Vermont is small, so that means NH is "neighbor-ish". If panzerguy is on the way to your neck of the woods, I'd like to stop in and say hi.

I got some serious painting done on my King Tiger.  I am going after a tiger in the 3rd company.  It had the ambush camo pattern.  I used the silly putty method for the first time.  I am more than happy with the result.  I think it was doog that had the tip.  If not I am sorry for the mistake.  After the three colors were laid done I gave a fine over spray of desert yellow to fade the paint some.  That and blend the colors together.  I know the red brown is a bit shinny.  It will be dulled down after the numbers are laid down.  Tracks and weathering are next on the build.

moose421:  nice camo' job!  I've used the silly putty technique for a 2-color scheme, but not a three.  It's really nice how the putty DOESN'T stick to the model isn't it?

Suggestion:You may want to add some green to that barrel too.

Moose, looks really great.  I have used fun-tac on my aircraft for camo. Same as silly putty more or less.  Questions about the method though.  Did you used ropes of the stuff and fill in with tape or did you press out sheets of the stuff in the pattern you needs?  Any pics of the model with the putty still on it?

SMJmodeler Thanks for the compliments.   I went off the echelon decal set.  It didn't show any green on the barrel.  I've tried liquid mask, tape, all stuck and pulled up paint or parts.

How I did the three was as follows:  I first painted the yellow, then silly puttied where I wanted the yellow. Then painted the green and more silly putty.  Finally painted the red.  The only spots that were not hard edged is where I didn't get the silly putty on the edges.

Wing_nut  Sorry didn't take any pics with the silly putty on it.  But how I did it was I made ropes then flatted to the shape I wanted.  For the bigger areas I filled in with silly putty.

I ended up using almost three eggs of silly putty for the entire paint job.

Once again thanks for the compliments.

I'm coming to the end of the 2 builds on my desk, so it looks like it's time to whip out the Tiger. Just found out Sunday night there's a 5 hour Ninja Warrior marathon (new episodes!) which should be perfect for doing transmission and road wheel work. Wink [;)]

Based on the speed you build, by the time I see you next week you should be doneWink [;)]  I'll be bringing the WIP of my Panther G for this GB, you need to see the zig-zag camo' first hand...it's pretty wild looking.  The weathering is taking shape tooThumbs Up [tup]!

Well, Ninja Warrior isn't exactly my inspiration, but if I'm going to sit down and watch a 4-hour marathon of new episodes, I may as well be multi-tasking some mindless trimming work while I'm at it. Wink [;)]

Hey, I've modeled in my Gi more than once...either I'm making good use of time before leaving for the dojo, or I'm too lazy to get undressed after coming home. I don't make a habit of it, though - paint on the belt would not be cool.

It does work though, if you want to try... Wink [;)]

I hope it's not to late to join.

I'd like to build Dragons king tiger kit

I don't know the kit number, so i found the pic.

Has anyone built this by the way?  Or, heard anything about it.  It looks like a fun, but complicated build

Thanks.

That looks to me like DML6189...a discontinued kit, but looks like it comes w/PE grills and a lot of the other usual Dragon goodies. Can't go wrong with DML. Wink [;)]

Cool, glad i'm able to contribute.

Funny question, but i like revisionist history, What color scheme do you think this cat would have if it was fighting in the middle of Kansas?

I know weird, but it'll turn out cool.

Thanks

If your talking Kansas during the summer. I would go with a desert yellow with a brown..  Like the early years of the wermarht.  Also some, but not a lot of dark green.  Kansas gets pretty dry during the summer and everything just about turns brown.  Very few trees.  I only know this because I use to drive over the road and was in Kansas twice a week.  Would make a wicked tank battle area.  Rolling hills, gullleys and not a lot of much else.

Sorry about the spelling error.

Hope this helps

Don't worry about the spelling, i read you loud and clear.

Yeah, Kansas is very flat, it's been scientifically proven to be flatter than a pancake.

Thanks for the input on the camo, you have the same idea that i do.

Sadly, I don't think you have a TON of leeway as to how to paint a Porsche-turreted King Tiger - there was only a total of 50 produced in 1944. Wink [;)]

Here's an update on progress that I've made with with the DML late Panther A Premium kit.  Panther 211 from the 26.Pz.Div in Italy is depicted in the instructions in dunkelgelb and it looks like some faint brown camo stripes.  I decied to go just with dunkelgelb, using Tamiya Dark Yellow (XF-60) over a base coat of Tamiya Flat Earth (XF-52).  Highlights were added on the larger panels by a spray of XF-60 lightened with a little flat white, then again after lightening a bit more with another dab of white.  Decaling was done by the Doog method, applying the decals on the flat painted surface rather than prepping with future.  A healthy dose of solvaset settled them nicely into the zim pattern.

Here's lookin' at you..

An umber oil wash was used to highlight detail and weathering was done with oils, pigments and a light overspray of diluted Tamiya Buff, although maybe not in that order; I just do what seems to be needed at the time.

An interesting field modification that was made to some Italian Panthers was the addition of tool boxes over the rear engine vents.  I found a resin set from Mig productions that seemed to fit well.

The kits has gone together pretty well; the only issues are the lack of tow cables and the warped top hull plate that made mating top and bottom hulls a bit of a challenge.  The metal barrel also adds weight which can unbalance the turret slightly (have a look back at the first photo to see how it's leaning forward).  A fishing sinker glued in the rear of the turret should fix that.

The road wheels and lower hull were dirtied by a mixture of Tamiya flat base, Elmers wood glue and finely ground real dirt.  This dries a light tan/brown in color which looks like dried mud.  A similar mixture with a little raw umber acrylic added to add some darker dirt chunks.  Then raw umber was dry brushed to blend the two.

A few additional shots..

Comments, criticisms and suggestions are welcomed.  Next up; painting the early Panther G.

I Love it.  Your weathering is like what I try to do.  Not overly done.  How did you get the wood boxes to look that way?   I have failed to achive any saveable results.  Also I am going to try alittle of you mud tech.  My KT needs alittle dirt to make her stand out.

Keep up the awsome work.Thumbs Up [tup]

I have pics of the finished hull, turret and road wheels all assembled, basically everything but the treads.

I added academy's tank crew.  The dark yellow patch on the side nearest the commander's cupola is just a color i'm thinking of using.  All built OOB

all responses welcome, thanks.

I used the Cavalier small box style zimm on mine and the front does not seem as pronounced as yours.  the sides look pretty good though.
