Mud Movers GB - July 1st - Dec 31st 2008

Mud Movers Group Build 2008

Welcome to the Group Build dedicated to celebrating the spirit of the ground attack mission profile!  CAS, tactical strike, mud movers, ground pounders, whatever the name or title the need to attack ground targets dates back to the earliest days of aviation when someone thought throwing grenades out of a open cockpit was a good idea.  Today the ground attack mission is much more complex and automated but still boils down to the simple truth of putting ordnance on the ground.

Since nearly (mostly) every military aircraft has had some kind of ground attack mission attempted with it, for better or worse, the options are almost limitless.  What follows is a non-comprehensive list of mud movers to wet your appetite.

Su-25 Frogfoot

Henschel HS 123

Tornado GR.1

Ju-87 Stuka

Hawker Typhoon

A-7 Corsair II

AH-1 Cobra

Mirage F1

F-15E

BAe Harrier

A-10

KA-50/52 Hokum

Bristol Beaufighter

IL-2 Sturmovik

A-4 Skyhawk

AC-130 Gunship

etc. etc.

The rules for this GB are as follows:

1. Time period from July 1st to December 31st 2008.  No early starts.

2. Any era, any scale welcome.

3.  OOB or AM accessories welcome.

4.  No what-ifs.  The aircraft must have been used in the ground attack role.

5.  No cross-overs with other group builds and must be unstarted.

6.  Most importantly - the aircraft must be presented in the ground attack role.  I want to see the ordnance!  Bays open, pylons loaded, you get the picture!

7.  Enjoy the build!  I like (prefer) participation in GB's as that's the whole point!  Post progress pics as often as you can, and don't hesitate to share any research or trivia.

I'd prefer to keep the strategic bombers out of this, but if you have a compelling reason to enter one then sell it to me.  Or any other aircraft that may be in a gray area.  I might like it, or might not. Wink [;)]

Lastly, GB badge.  Thanks to Dougums for putting this together!  Everyone joined is more than welcome to display the badge once the build starts on July 1st.  I only ask you save it your harddrive, upload to a image hosting site (i.e. Photobucket) and link to it in your signature.

For those interested, post what you'd like to build (manufacturer and scale) and I'll add you to the list.

Dougums - July will be here before we know it and then those of us in the N. hemisphere will complain that summer is passing by too fast! Tongue [:P]

Bondoman - Whoa, cool pic!  The shadow of the aircraft is sweet!

Spiralcity - Welcome!  I'll update the list.  Never can have enough Sturmoviks.

Odd that on your list of "eligibles" the first thing is an Su-25...I have a 1/72 (not my usual scale) Revell Frogfoot - with TONS of ordinance! - that I've had since I was in high school...think I got it for Christmas in 1992. Just been sitting in the box for about 17 years, now resting atop my stash.

As I can't seem to make up my mind (too many juicy choices) this may be the perfect excuse to tackle it. Big Smile [:D]

BTW, that pic in the first post begs to be made into a badge...does that make me a n00b? Wink [;)]

dupes - in perpetuity! Tongue [:P]  I love the Frogfoot!  Even sitting on the ground it has such a purpose to it!  I'll put you down for 1/72 version.

Dougums - Yep, dupes was right.  That looks killer as a badge!  Although the tank does seem to be somewhat cut off.  If you can tweak it, then I think that's it. Thumbs Up [tup]

Arki, you can count me in with an Italeri 1/48 IDS Tornado. Looks like a sweet kit....nice recessed panel lines, exceptional detail (except for the seats, so I'll most likely go aftermarket there and with the decals as well), and tons of ordinance! Wink [;)]

Ruddratt - build noted!  I have a fond spot for the Tornado so I'm very happy to see someone building one for this GB.  It's another of those aircraft that just have a presence.  I have the Italeri ADV Tornado which I hope to build soon.

Disaster!! i went to pull my ac 130 out of my closet and found it to be pretty beat up (read busted parts on airframe) while not too far out of my range its more than i want to jump on with school around the corner. so...I GET TO GO SHOPPING!!!!! im thinking an a7 or f4. either way it will be a nam bird.

Bummer about losing the gunship, but that's how life goes sometimes.  Let me know when you've picked the next build.  Something from the Vietnam era would be quite cool.  Thumbs Up [tup]
