rlawson, I gotta know what was not a ship that was attacked with a torpedo.  I know I coud wiki it, but I'd really love to hear the story from you.  :) Also nice choice for subject, I love the Syraider such a brutal looking thing even though it has a propeller.  I've got a Hasegawa A1H kicking around in my stash that will get built one of these days.  Anyways, it's great to see activity starting to pick up in this GB, I'm ticking off the days to the kick-off, which will reach me before everyone else because of my location in the world, wooo hoooo! ;)

Hello kilo1-1

Glad to oblige.  In April, 1951, the allied advance into North Korea was threatened by waters from the Hwachon dam, a modern high dam built in a narrow canyon.  The Koreans were aware of this, having released enough water to briefly flood roads and wash out bridges downstream. Bombing the face of the dam was not effective.  On May 1, the USS Princeton launched a mixed force of AD-4s (VA-195) and AD-4Ns (VC-35) loaded with WWII vintage Mk.13 torpedoes, 8 in all. They were accompanied by a dozen F4U-4s (VF-193?) for flak suppression.

After the Corsairs had silenced the flak, the ADs attacked the dam from the reservoir side, aiming for the flood gates.  Six of the torpedoes ran true, destroying one flood gate and damaging another.  No losses were recorded to the attack force, and the dam was no longer a factor in the war.  Since then, VA-195 has claimed the nicknam Dambusters.

This looks like a cool build but I have a couple of questions.  Is this restricted to fixed wing aircraft or can helos play also?  Question 2-Once a specific aircraft is taken, the F-15E for example, is that a/c locked out or can there be more than one?

Hey, lewbud.  If you notice in my first post I list some helicopters as examples, so they are most welcome.

GB's typically don't put a limit on the number of specific aircraft being built, and this one is no different.  I couldn't care less if we end up with 15 F-15E's!  I recall we already have several A-10's on the roster.

If you are interested, just let me know what you intend to build.

Cheers

Well, that's what I get for not reading the instructions correctly!  Will probably be something Soviet, either a Hind (RevG or Hasegawa) or Su-25 (KP) maybe both.  Regardless of choice it will be 1/72.

Speaking of Hinds, I just got the Trumpeter 1/35 E version in the mail today.

Ho. Ly. Cow. Dinner [dinner]

This kit is AMAZING. Shock [:O] And HUGE! I only wish I could find the time to build it for this GB, but I have a feeling that it's going to be a while...I need to do this puppy right. There also may be a bit of aftermarket goodies involved by the time I'm done.

Let me see how fast I can crank out the Frogfoot, and clear a few other GB's off the roster. Mischief [:-,]

Just an FYI, but I'll be leaving tomorrow on a well-earned week vacation.  During that time I will not be checking the forums, so if I don't respond to your request or comment that's why.  I'll catch up once I return at the end of next week.

I would certainly appreciate those of you in this GB to watch over things in my absence.Make a Toast [#toast]

Cheers

Is anyone else itching to get started? Big Smile [:D] I've been lining up everything I need for this build and coming up with my build sequence. I'm using a bunch of AM stuff on this build, so that's a necessity.

The only thing I'm still lacking is some extra styrene sheet stock; I'm planning a wee bit of scratchbuilding in the cockpit. This'll be my first attempt at any kind of scratchbuilding, so it'll be simple... just some stuff that should be mounted on the floor like the tail wheel lock and hand hydraulic pump.

Here's the AM stuff being dumped into this build:

Quickboost resin engine, landing gear doors, and gunsight.

Eduard PE: a bash of the Zoom set for the Academy kit, and the full-boat color PE set for the Tamiya kit.

Also getting a prop and wheels from the spares box, originally from the Tamiya kit.

Waiting patiently to get started! Dinner [dinner]

Thats a lot of stuff to toss into a 1/72 kit. Make a Toast [#toast]

I noticed quite a few people are building in 1/72 for this GB.

Yeah, it is! I have to admit, I'm not sure how this is gonna turn out. I figure that it's either A) going to be stunning, or B) it'll never get past the halfway point, and I'll be a sputtering loon in a straightjacket... with little PE bits stuck on my face. Laugh [(-D]

The Academy kit is certainly not bad, but the Tamiya P-47 kits are absolute jewels, so it doesn't stack up well against them. The detail is a bit on the thinner side, but I'm seeing that as giving me a blank canvas to try some things. The Quickboost engine alone would dress this kit up a ton, it really looks great.

I didn't choose the scale per se, I just happened to have this kit on hand, and decided to pull it out. I definitely struggle a little bit more in the smaller scale, but there are so many good subjects in 1/72, I figure I might as well get comfy with it.

Yeah I go with 1/72 for two reasons:  1) Cost 2) Number of available subjects.

And yes I'm itching to get started too.   I'm not doing any AM stuff in mine, but it is going to be my first attempt at Airbrushing a Camouflage pattern on a model, so it is going to be an interesting and hopefully successful experiment.

I've been reading all through chukw's Helldiver thread in the Aircraft section. Wow. It has me really fired up about the little bit of scratchbuilding that I want to do for this build. I've never seen someone explain their scratchbuilding techniques so clearly and simply. It's given me lots of ideas!

I really don't like the wheel wells on this kit and I was thinking of adding aftermarket resin ones.... but now I'm really glad that I didn't get any. The PE set I have has quite a few nice parts that can go in there, and I can cut out the old ones and re-box them in myself.

Well, now that I've put it down in writing, I suppose I'm committed! Let's hope it works... Big Smile [:D]

I'm stunned!  Do you even remember the last time you built a plane?! Big Smile [:D] Laugh [(-D] Hey, we needed someone to balance out Wingnut's defection (temporary) anyway!

Hermes, you're in.  Thumbs Up [tup] If you build aircraft at anything near the quality of your armor builds, I know we're in for a treat.

The last plane I actually finished was brush painted with Testors silver...we won't go there Dead [xx(]

I have worked on a Do-335, Me-262 and a P-47D within the last year, but since I don't usually find resin cockpits detailed enough for my taste, I usually shove it back in the box about half way through scratchbuilding the cockpit detail. Hopefully I will be able to keep the detailing to a minimum on this project, and actually finish it. Whistling [:-^]

Dupes, I think I'll do okay. Just hit me if I start reaching for the orange pigments Tongue [:P]

Arki,

The Frogfoot is the KP kit in Czech markings, the Hind will be the Hasegawa D model in Czech Tiger Meet markings.

Buddy, you're turning into a GB addict like me!  LOL

Good to see you here too. Can't wait to see the Frogfoot, and Hind. :)  I don't know where you find the energy to do two kits at once, I'm in awe.

Kilo,

I guess you could say I'm addicted.  In addition to this build and the NavAir build, I'm in the Cold War build (BRDM-1, BRDM-U and a R-7 ICBM) and two local builds which have to be done by the time the Nats roll around.

You are keen Buddy.

I'm struggling with one at the moment, the addition of this one should spur me along to finishing the other GB I've got going as well.  I don't think I'd be able to keep my sanity if I tried at 3rd build.

Had a couple of minutes while some glue was drying yesterday, figured I'd crack into the Frogfoot box to see what I was in for. Looks like so:

Only thing I'm reaaaaaly worried about is the decals. The sheet is a little warped, and dated 1989. Heh. Should be interesting. Big Smile [:D]

I'm getting ready to start, unfortunately won't be able to the end of July most likely.  Started the research portion, went to a local air museum south of Dallas at Lancaster airport where they have not one, not two, but THREE Hinds on display!Big Smile [:D]  One will be relegated to gate guard duty due to unplanned contact by the rotor head with a bridge (hopefully an expensive mistake for the trucking company), one is on display at the moment, and one is being returned to flight status.  Took 100+ pics of the two on display, but had to go to work before I could get to the flightworthy one.Sigh [sigh]  Will be returning in a couple of weeks to get pics of that one.  Here's the link:
