Good idea... I'll try and find a cheap-ish bubbletop and call the scene "My Two Jugs", and enter it in a contest under my wife's name Wink [;)]

Nice job on Miss Marilyn!  The only complaint I have is that when I see a picture with other builds like that last one, I really want to see what else you have in the display cabinet!Smile [:)]

Roy, I was kinda just writing in jest there, so don't take time away from your family on my account.  If you can get other pictures at some point, that would be great.

Fellow Group Builders,

It has been a while since I posted a progress report on my P-38J.  One reason is because work has been crazy.  The other reason, is because this is a Revell kit.  I've read the horror stories on this forum about the Revell P-38J.  With my "Michael's" 50% coupon in hand, I picked up the kit, thinking I could tame this beast.

I'm not an advanced modeler, this is only my 4th kit, 2nd with an airbrush.  After putting this together, I feel that you need to have some advanced skill to make this bird look good.  I've had to sand & putty almost every interconnecting piece.  I've done ok with most of the plane, however, the hardest part for me was the nose.  NOTHING seemed to fit here.  The cone & gun bay doors just didn't want to line up.  I used tons of putty to make the pieces look flush.  I lost a few rivets in the process.  Another component with fit issues is the canopy.  I don't know if I got a bad piece of plastic or what, but it wasn't even close.  Fortunately, I mounted it before spraying & filled the gaps with squadron putty.

I wanted to try a natural metal finish.  This would be a good kit to practice on.  If I messed it up, I wouldn't be upset at trashing an inexpensive model.  After the airframe construction was complete, I sprayed it with Mr. Surfacer 1000 as a primer.  I found a few areas that needed to be repaired, so I broke out the putty once again & sanded away.  After more putty & more Mr. Surfacer, i was ready for Alclad II.  I chose to shoot the plane in white aluminum.  After the entire plane was covered, I taped off a few panels & shot them with duraluminum for contrast.

Tonite, I hope to tape off the nose & twin booms to shoot the anti-glare paint.  Here's a pic:

Darth, it looks like you have tamed that beast.  Good looking P-38!

Well John, I apologize.  I'm not sure where I saw the name Roy and mis-associated it with you ... Perhaps I'm just getting loopy with the holidays here.

Hey there  All!  I chose this for the 48 hour weekend GB and it was a crazy time for all and still is for many!  It says Army really big on it thought those who missed the GB madness might like a peak.

The P-36A I promised is done. History follows from the Airforce Museum page.

Lt. Rasmussen mounting his P-36 in his pajamas on the morning of December 7, 1941. The airfield was under attack and his was one of a few aircraft that made it into the air before being destroyed. Once in the air Rasmussen charged his machine guns but to his surprise they wouldn't stop firing. He pulled the charging handle back into the locked position so that he wouldn't shoot off all his rounds before meeting the enemy. In his first attack he shot down one enemy Zero, then was attacked by 2 other Zeros. The hits severed his rudder and hydraulics and he lost control of the aircraft. As he lost altitude he regained control and headed into some clouds to avoid being attacked then made it back to the airfield. Landing without brakes he rolled off the end of the runway. The plane was a total write off except for the engine.

The ground personnel who had witnessed the whole scene came running up to his plane cheering. After the attack over 500 bullet holes were counted in the aircraft, and a 20mm shell and bullet were found lodged in the radio directly behind him which saved his life.

I chose the 1/48 Academy ex Hobby Craft kit.

A few work in progress pics! This was a blast!

I printed my own decals using the Testers Decal maker kit. This option isn't available with the kit decals and I would like to find the Old Pearl Harbor defender version by Hobby craft as it looks cool!  Different scheme though as well.

Here is How she turned out in about 26 hours.

I really have enjoyed this build Joe! If you can't tell by all the models. Tongue <img src=" border="0" width="15" height="15" />

Your comments add a lot to the history for me an I always learn something new from them!

I'll be watching for the other builds! Thumbs Up <img src=" border="0" width="15" height="15" />

Nice P-36 Aaron. That story about Rasmussen is really something. The custom decals are nice as well. Thumbs Up [tup]

I am just currently waiting on decals for my P-47. I got the 1/72 Eduard Francis Gabreski set because I didn't feel like freehanding the Firey Ginger on Neel Kearby's Thunderbolt.

Aaron, good work on that P-36!

I will be building that same kit for this GB after I finish my current Corsair GB.  The P-36 has always been a favorite of mine, I think since I first built that old Monogram P-36 in 1/72.  Plus its relationship to the P-40.

I have updated the front page squadron.  If there is someone's build that I have missed (between holidays, football season, and various house projects along with my own modeling I haven't been as fastidious in managing this GB as I should have been) please let me know and I'll update it again.  From where I am sitting, everyone is doing some great work in this GB.

I'm finally at a good point with builds to begin this GB.  It's the 1/48 Hasegawa P-38J with Eduard Zoom PE, Pyn-Up decals and Black Magic canopy masks.

I don't have a built P-38 for my display, so I'm looking forward to this.

Cheers

Hello all,

I finally finished the Revell P-38J!  I picked this kit up at Michael's & used a 50% off coupon.  As I walked to the register, I thought to myself: "How bad can it be?"  This model will definitely challenge you.  Make sure you have some putty & sandpaper, there are fitment issues.

I didn't care for the decals that came with the kit, so I purchased the Super Scale set that included "St Louis Blues" from the 433 fighter squadron /475 fighter group that flew in the Phillippines in 1944.  Because this was a relatively inexpensive kit, I figured it would be a good time to try out a natural metal finish.  After construction of the airframe was complete, I primed the model with Mr. Surfacer 1000.  I then shot the entire plane with Alclad II white aluminum.  Once dry (it dries quickly), I taped off a few panels & shot Alclad II duraluminum for contrast.  Once this was dry, I was able to tape off the anti-glare paint on the nose & twin booms.  I had trouble finding references for this particular aircraft.  The top half of the Super Scale sheet said that the anti-glare paint was olive drab.  The bottom half of the sheet said that it was black.  I saw a few pacific P-38Js with black anti-glare paint & liked the look of it.  I'm not sure if it is historically accurate.

It was a fun kit to build & definitely helps develop your modeling skills.  After using Alclad II, I'm no longer afraid of natural metal finishes.  This stuff was very easy to use & it looks great.  My lightning has a new home on the mantle with the other WWII birds that I've built.  Here are 2 pics:

I was experiencing symptoms of withdrawal after finishing the P-38J, had to crack open the Hasegawa P-40N.  Got the 'pit done over the weekend.  This is my first Hasegawa kit, I like it already.

With the craziness of the holidays over (mostly) I've managed some progress on the cockpit by diving into the Eduard zoom PE set.  I should have something to take pictures of within the next couple of days.

As promised, a couple of quick progress pics.  I have most of the PE for the cockpit now attached.  I've shaved off the detail on the kit IP to make way for the PE replacement, but I'll paint it before attaching.

Figure by the end of the weekend, I should have a lot of this primed and painted.

While I'm moving slower than I'd like, I've managed to complete the cockpit painting and assembly.  Next are the booms and fuselage, which is where things will get tricky.
