#6 Tristar Panzer 1 Ausf. A sd.Kfz.101 (Early) WIP
Posted by Schnobs on Sunday, July 12, 2009 5:25 PM

Friends, Modelers, countrymen, lend me your eyes and opinions for Build #6!  Wink [;)]

I completed my figure and multiple head build post over in the Figure section in order to improve my figure painting skills as I waited for the rest of the parts to get here for #6. I painted up a few Ultra Cast Heads for future projects as a painting exercise.

My next build is going to be a Tri-Star 35028 - 1/35 German Panzer I Ausf. A sd.Kfz.101 Early set in North Africa.  It will be my first time assembling a full interior, using Aber Photo Etch, and Fruil tracks.

I have a really cool Tank figure that I just completed who looks just like Cobra Commander with a handkerchief over his lower face and goggles.  Die G.I. JOE DIE!

The Diorama is going to be called Dinosaurs and the TC commander is going to be leaning out of his turret looking at a Triceratops  fossilized Skeleton half buried in rock and drifted over with sand right in front of him. It should look cool if I can pull it off.

Thanks again in advance for the support and encouragement as I go forward.  If anyone has any gotcha's on the Trisar kit or the Aber Basic Set please let me know.

Let's Do This!

Wink [;)]Edmund that sounds like an interesting idea ofr a dio.  That guy standing looks strange without a tank around him.  Nice painting on the fig and the heads.  they must be looking intot he sun... very squinty.

Thanks Marc!  I am starting to feel more comfortable with figures but it's a huge skillset!

All the heads were produced in a Clint Eastwood assembly line!

Ought to be a fun one to watch Edmund, your figure painting skills are accelerating rapidly...and the dio idea is one that I'm really interested in seeing cross the finish line. Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks Bill & Guney for your comments about the Dio ideal.  I thought it would be fun and really streeeetch my present skillsets.  I never thought I would be doing fossil bone and sediment research along with everything else. Confused [%-)]

I really liked how Cobra Commander turned out.  He was fun to paint.

Hey Schnobs, I just started on the exact same kit about a week ago(but I plan to put it in Norwegian markings.) What a weird concidence. LOLBig Smile [:D]

Though here on my end, I won't be using Aber PE, nor Fruil tracks(since I thought the kit supplied ones looked good), nor will I be making it into a dio. Anyways, here a link I found about this kit: http://www.internetmodeler.com/2007/november/armor/tristar_panzer1_review.php

I found the pics to be most useful for painting. Hope it helps.Smile [:)]

Michael can we be build buddies? Big Smile [:D]  What a great coincidence I have a world class builder who is making the same vehicle as I am at the same time.  It does not get better than that with clothes on my friend. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Are you making the Early or Late variant?  Thanks for the link.

Thanks on both counts Steve.  I feel like if I don't get this ideal out of my head I will explode!  Yeah Ultra Cast heads rock and they were a joy to paint!

World class builder, me? Nah.......well maybe.Wink [;)]Blush [:I] Anyways I plan on building the Early version, and I'm building it for the Norway WWII GB 2009(hence the markings.) As for build buddies, I don't plan on starting a WIP, but since I'm building it for a GB I will have updates. Thus if you want, I could send a message your way when I post an update.

That reminds me, I already got up an update(my first), just a few days ago......./forums/13/1044505/ShowPost.aspx#1044505

OK, I'm watching, I already was, actually.  I've been waiting for this one, Edmund.

There was a time when I was obsessed with Dinos, wait, that's NOW, well, there wa a time when I thought I might make a living digging them up.  Maybe I can flip you some technical advice?

I really like that tank commander, something mean about the goggles and "cowboy" face covering.

I hope to swing by the LHS tonight, Vallejo, money on the way!

Oh that's right Bill you had posted that Shermie and a T-Rex.  Post that again to this thread he was way cool.  i will definately be picking your brain about fosslized bones stuck in rock!

I practiced painting bones on Sunday by painting up a Warrior Skull!  What do you think?  Great Halloween gift for 1/35th scale modelers!

Thanks Rodolfo!

I was just finishing up another figure last night before I seriously dove into the Panzer 1.

He has a little detailing left but is about 95% done.

I'll be watching this one for sure. Very neat idea. Plus I've got Tristar's training version of this kit. I'm hoping the build goes smooth. Good luck.

if you're looking for an idea on finishing, there was a dio done like this a few years ago for one of the European shows and a pic of it was in AFV Modeler (forget the issue). If I recall, it used the Tristar Pz1a and the same figure! Dinosaur was not a Triceratops though. Some cool dust/sand drifting effects on the bones. If I can find the pic, Ill post a reference (dont have a scanner anymore).
I've got a few of these kits in the stash that I've been dying to build, but I need to be disciplined and finish up some other stuff first!
Ill be watching the build-looks like a fantastic kit and I've heard nothing but great things about it and you do great build narratives!

Thanks Eric!  I lost a little ground on this because I was finishing up a Figure WIP over in the figure section and I finally "finished" it last night.  Are we ever finished?  Everytme I look at something I have done I see what I could of done differently or better.  I guess that's just how we roll!  Big Smile [:D]

Check this out!

Hey F Mathews!

Yes I did purchase the PDF from AFV of that Dio which is called "Dust n Bones" by Ulf Andersson.

I was doing a searh for reference material on the Panzer 1 and that came up and I was lost!

It was actually a skeleton made of Milliput of a Dromedary "camel".  Yes it was my inspiration that's for sure!  If anyone has any ideals where I can can get multiple colors of really fine sand please let me know or how to sculpt and layer drifts of sand.

Hi, Edmund, good luck with thttet tristar Pz 1. I have several of them unbuilt but have heard nothin but good words about them. I dont know how old your one is exactly but the original ones had Kasten tracks and they are really small but look easy enough to work with. The figure painting is comming along grand.

All thet best with your new project,

Terry.

Hi Terry,

Thank you as always for your nice comments.  It's their newest kit and includes the Early and Late kit in one.  I am building the Early.  I plan to either not even mount the fenders or damage the heck out of them so more of the track will be exposed than normal so I wanted a natural sag and look so I went with the Fruil tracks for that reason.

Cheers!

Sorry Edmund, I've got so many of these that I get mixed up. I've the Flak the Training tank, early I just love to look at the sprues its like magic seeing them. I must say the only Tristar kits I did not like were the Mk.IV's as there is no weld detail on them.

I don't know how else to describe it, but I picked up a can of extremely fine sand off of the street in my city ten or so years ago-I stepped out of my car and saw this stuff against the curb and knew it would be perfect. I didn't have anything to put it in, so I actuallybought a soda, drank it and filled the can! I still have 3/4 of the can left, but it's good stuff. You might find the perfect stuff curbside downtown!

Craft stores have different consistencies of sand as well-I bought a bag of stuff so finely grained at Michael's that it sticks to your hands when you touch it.
