Build Update:

I am in the super detailing phase to build more depth into the model so after a PM Wbill and I had I added a tinfoil transition piece  properly painted and weather to one headlight to see the difference and it was well worth the effort.

Thanks Bill for the advice it is appreciated!

Adam:  Very funny picture my friend!  I am teaching my little two year old son to pee in the toilet by throwing in cheerios and telling him to sink them and when he gets on target he makes that face!  He also has that expression when he pees on my shoes!  Big Smile  I am glad you like it so far Adam that means a lot.

Jim:  Always a pleasure to have your enthusiastic support on my WIP's my young friend.  Thanks!

Dave:  Thanks Dave and I don't know about setting a bar if I did your figures hit it hard.  I love the detail you were able to get out of the VB treatment!  Well done and you can water board your figure head that has the errant brush stroke in windex and start over anytime you want.  It works really well.  I have read Simple Green is great too but I haven't tried that yet.

Wayne:  Great questions and observations Sir.  I was wondering why no one mentioned that.  Just because you have a pointed head doesn't mean you are sharp!!  Wink  These guns were fed in two ways ten round clip and belt fed.  These are one of the details I mentioned and I am not sure how I going to approach it yet or hide that half of the gun and part of the fuel drum with a milli-put tarp.  I might try to make up a belt out of individual brass pieces.  We shall see.  The washed out look of the last pictures is just another lighting experiment.  Military Modeling has asked me take some well lit high res photos of the completed build for a photo feature so I am in the middle of experimenting with light boxes a s well.  I will biog making a homemade lightbox and test shots later today.

Wbill:  Wow Bill that is really cool of you you to say because you are one of my hero's and set a standard of consistent quality with every build you document. I want to be a better than good Dio builder and I know what that means it means the learning and improving never stops and you have to be better than good at everything!!!!  I just looked through a number of High Res photos of the Dios at Euro Militaire 2009 and I was so struck with so much child like wonder that I was just lost.

psstoff995's lbro:  Thank You!

Bill:  Thank you Bill your friendship and support has been invaluable over the last year.  Having someone to throw ideals and concepts at has really helped me improve.  As per our conversation earlier I will do my bet to document the building of this light box and see if it improves the quality of the output.

Fantastic build, Edmund.  Your planning, research, and attention to detail are evident.

Your trajectory in this hobby is an inspiration for others, and your build logs show a consideration and willingness to mentor others that is fantastic for the hobby.

Outstanding work Edmund! Ditto to what the others have said...it's hard to believe you only have 11 builds under your belt. You've achieved a level of mastery in a very short space of time that is truly phenomenal! Yes

I still have to permanently mount stowage and paint and weather helmets and canteens to include adding straps.  Down to the wire on this one soon!

~Edmund`~ That's a marvelously prepared SBS, as is the entire thread you have going here. I've read many techniques from Masters that couldn't describe the basics so clearly. Simply superb job on the head that is the tutorial's subject. Perhaps your best to date. This build is going to amazing with that purposeful grizzled crew! YesYes

Hi Wayne!

Well which is a deep subject that is a good question Sir!

I started using Tamiya white thinned with Tamiya Isopropyl based thinner and it was just too chalky.  I hated the results and I would waterboard them in the Windex. I then after Rick Lawler's helpful hints used Lacquer thinner successfully. I then tried Mr Surfacer 1200 Aerosol successfully as well as Tamiya Fine Surface Primer in the aerosol can.  In this case I used Model Master Acryl Grey Primer through the AB because the beard was so fine I didn't want to take any chances.  I find that the MM Gray Primer Acryl thinned with Tamiya Isopropyl has great tooth for the Vallejo to adhere to.

Hope that helps.  Oh BTW Wayne your Marine figure is way too cool for school!

First all thank you to the following people for their support and kind comments:

Manny, Adam, Bob, Kenny, Dave, and Julian.

Second I don't  know what a real artist is I am an educated monkey has simply followed directions and put a lot of effort into learning from people that were gracious enough to teach and especially to the following people:

I want to pause here and state that any technique or method I describe I learned from the following talented gentleman and their books:

Armor Modeling by John Prigent

How to Build Armor Dioramas by Lynn Kessler

How to Paint Realistic Military Figures by Lynn Kessler & Don Winar

Modeling Panzer Crewman of the Heer by Mark Bannerman

Mark Dollery Articles

Shepherd Paine and Calvin Tan

Andy\Manny\Adam\Karl

A couple of guys on the other Forum I post asked me to put together a SBS on my fourth figure which I will post here as well to freely pass on what was given to me.  This is not about egos and being better than anyone else to me.  it is about  freely sharing our successes and failures in order for all of us to benefit and improve our outputs.

4th LRDG NWM Figure SBS

Hello Gentleman I have been off working on my fourth figure and Chris and Ted had asked if I would write up a quick SBS on the fourth figure and at first I felt that I really could not bring anything new to you guys especially due to the excellent awe inspiring work I have read on this forum.  Then I thought what I could bring to the table is the experience of a first time modeler and figure painter that has only been in the hobby one year as of December and that would perhaps have value to the editors and guys that are writing articles designed to encourage and teach the new guy.  This is my 21st figure and here is a picture of my first figure that started this madness last Christmas.  My daughter and I wanted to do something in the sprit of the season that we could work on together so I purchased a couple cheap ceramic figures and  a throw away acrylic water color set and ten minutes later she was "done and six hours later I looked up and I had created Rudy!

I will never forget the feeling of peace that had overcome me with that little escape and due to the fact that I wanted to keep my manhood and not be beat up by guys for painting little deer figurines I bought my first DML PZ.IV Smart Kit and dove in.  I am in the computer industry and I know how to self feed myself knowledge so I started researching and reading 24"7.

After all my research I decided to focus my figure medium of choice on Vallejo Model Color paints due to their versatility and the quick drying times and also the fact that we have young children in the house.  I also use oil washes for certain applications and for outlining some figures.

After that long introduction Let's Do This!

My first lesson was to purchase the best resin figures I could afford and due to the nature of Vallejo paints proper figure prep and priming is essential.  Here are two pictures of the figure prepped and primed with Model Master Grey Primer Acryl.  I have also used Mr. Surfacer 1200 aerosol successfully.

I also discovered that it is very necessary to reduce the handling of the figure before during and after painting before the figure is sealed with a flat coat.  This prevents leaving oils on the figure that will literally rub off the paint very quickly and is very difficult to cover up successfully.  I finally hit upon a great cheap method of accomplishing this which was the purchase of four furniture legs that were predrilled with 1"4 inch bolts w

Hi Edmund, I have missed several of your posts the last few months. This, your latest build, passes beyond the run of the mill "hey guy's look wot I dun" and becomes the work of a real artist. I think we agreed in august 2009 to cut back on the Yes, so I will behave here and give you YesYes.

Truly magnificent work sir !

Sleep - O How I loathe those little slices of Death!

Dream of the Endless

Tonight! We bid farewell to the Day

Let the black knight mount his mare

And thus bring forth the continuous Nightmare

Sleep! Sleep! The Sandman whispered his ancient words

Sealing your lids with his crusty sword!

Each sleep becomes little slices of death

Each Dream takes away your gasping breath!

Feel your head become heavy

Your consciousness becomes weary.

O Hear! The sound of hooves

As the Sandman makes his move!

Galloping away as he take a piece of you

While you sleep, Your inner self

He hath claimed to keep!

Once the light fades into Darkness,

And you take it upon your rest

Let the Sandman cometh

To bring forth your escape

From Awareness!

Hope this is some help...cheers....Kenny

Bob you are a barbarian that reads the classics!  I always thought Edger Allan Poe was the author of that quote but I beleive you are correct based on the following data!

Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite writers and I have pondered weak and weary over the origins of a quote that has puzzled me for some time. Could someone please help me solve this mystery?

This is the qoute:
"Sleep... Oh! how I loathe those little slices of death.... "
(some variations with "Dreams, How I loathe..." and such may occur)

It seems to be a widely spread opinion that this quote is from Poes work. Sometimes Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is credited, but as far as I know it is commonly believed to originate from Edgar Allan Poe.

I have been searching through Poes complete works (all his poems, novels, short stories, long stories, some material that seemed to be scripts for different plays, some letters and articles) and I can't seem to find this sentence or anything remotely like it anywhere in his work. It could be something he actually said or something he wrote in a letter or article that I don't know of. Possible, yet not very likely. A quote as famous and well spread as this one would probably be easy to pinpoint if it really came from Poe.

I haven't found anything that resembles this quote in Longfellows complete poems either, but I haven't been as thorough in my research as in the case of Mr Poe.

What I did find was "The Columbia World of Quotations 1996" and a sequence from the 1959 film "Journey to the Center of the Earth. It goes like this:

"I don’t sleep. I hate those little slices of death."
ATTRIBUTION:
Journey to the Center of the Earth 1959 (based on the novel by Jules Verne)
Walter Reisch (1903–1963), Austrian screenwriter, Charles Brackett (1892–1969), U.S. and Henry Levin.
The character Count Saknussemm (Thayer David) at the edge of the sea, explaining to Lindenbrook why he isn’t resting.

Not exactly the same quote, but very close indeed. The scriptwriters are credited for the quote with no reference to Poe or Longfellow or anyone else. It is not to be found in the english translation of the original novel by Jules Verne either.

Any suggestion or information on the origins of this qoute? Does it come from Poe? If it does, where can I find it? If it doesn't, who said/wrote it and how did Poe end up with the credit (Nightmare on Elm Street III might be a good guess)?

It is a long "question" but I thought I might provide you with all the information I have gathered so far to make things easier for you. I have tried almost everything else (including unanswered e-mail to e-note and other sites), and this might be my last chance.

Please help my poor soul...

Why thank you kind sir! Wink I'm just a head-scratching student like yourself in this regard though, having picked up what I know from reading about it being done or experimented on by others. Big Smile

Color theory and how they interact visually is always fascinating IMHO. It's amazing what certain color combinations, when properly balanced, can produce. Some of theme are counter-intuitive on the surface but the results don't lie. Wink

Adam:  Thanks man I tired really hard to capture the same look and colors of the SAS Jeep driver in the foreground.  Rest is for the weak!!

Bill:  Nice Quote!

WBill: I have read quite a lot of articles about highlighting and shadowing white and black and of all colors Panzergrau.  The school of thoughts that blue adds coldness to the Grey and red adds warmth.  My reading leads me to believe that a lot of it is based on current trends and practices.  Scale color is also an interesting subject which I totally agree with as well.  I think your models tread that fine line very well.Bill.  Kudos to you!
