Sdk.fz 234/4 WIP . No more post here . Link to completed build on p.8

I'm building this kit for the "Panzerjaeger Group Build " of Erics .  I already have about a months worth of work into this so this will be a catch up thred to get to where i am as of now , which is just getting into the exterior painting .

Its an old kit with some pit falls , like sink holes right where you dont want them !

The interior needed some help and correction so i did some basic scratch building .The kit provides a table like gun stand but i didnt find that in my research so i changed it . I failed to get a picture of the kit part before i hacked it apart but here is a picture of it in the instructions .

I used variouse shapes of  Evergreen styrene to rebuild the stand .

There was a storage compartment under the gun stand that was missing from the kit so i made mine from some scrap phone system push bottons as a starting point and went from there .

I'll stop here for now so i dont burn anyone out trying to look at to many pictures . i'll be back tomorrow.

I don't know much about the armored car kit you are building.

i would like to mention I admire your scrounging ability (phone buttons ) and look forward to seeing further posts as you complete the kit.

One question:

Did that open armored car have the interior painted same color as the exterior base paint?

Thanks for the comments .

Well ............this will probably open up a can of worms . I researched and with the info i found  it looked like the interior/exterior was painted a red primer and then the exterior and the area inside the upper side panels and sometimes the gun breach assembly painted Dunkelgelb .

Ok , thats my answer and i'm sticking to it .........until convinced other wise .Pirate

Was the red primer on the actual vehicles over-painted at the factory or in the field with the exterior color or a different, muted color?

I'm basing my paint scheme on a late 1944 vehicle that was painted primer red at the factory with a overspray of Dunkelgelb and some Olivgrun and Rotbraun sprayed over that for a good  looking camo scheme , imo .

I picked up this kit for $5 a while back, but have yet to build it... I'll definitely keep watchin this thread to see what else ye do, as I really like your scratchbuilding on the sub-parr interior... can't wait to see the rest of this build!

Looks like you're dressing up the older kit nicely Carl! While the Italeri offering has been superseded by the DML kit in terms of modern molding quality and level of detail, the older kit will still build up with some TLC. Looking forward to the next round of updates! Beer

Thanks Bill ! I didnt start this project with the idea of spending much time on it but the interior was so far off i decided to add to it .

I added some detail to the gun  and shield .

There is a shelf for the radio on the left of the gun mount and a compartment on the right side of the mount  that were missing .No gear shift levers were provided so i made mine from copper wire  with a couple of dabs of CA on the tip of each lever to form the knob .The interior is painted red primer .

Of course there was no radio so i scratced one and added a microphone . .

The finders on and wheels on temporary .I know the interior looks brown ....must be my lighting .The top and bottom hull halves were a bad fit and had to be glued one side at a time to get everything lined up . I used CA (super glue) to speed up the process.

More tommorow .

coming out nice, Shell... also checked over at the GB.... I'm confused.. 2 different vehicles or one vehicle at 2 different levels of completeness?.... in any case, nice.

I would also be very hesitant to spray an over all dusting on any model i may have built.. just not my style...you got guts !

Ready for exterior paint .

I painted the exterior red primer .That was a good base coat .

Then i sprayed the dunkelgelb , olivgrun and rotbraun.Over that i misted a sand color.

Tonight i weathered with a wash of acrylic black mixed with burnt umber . Over that i applied some shading using chalks .

You're a man of many talents Carl...you've managed to change a WW2 German armored car into a Cold War Russian jet using only your airbrush! Propeller Like the direction you're headed in with the three-tone pattern, very nice. Beer

Wow!  As usual, your WIP can serve as a "How To.." on a 234/4 build, thus saving all of us money to sunk into kit resources.  Beautiful work, as always.

Nice job all around so far Carl! Not all that 'in to' the 234 subject matter but liking your Mig-29 (or is it an SU-37?) even better.

You've certainly shown some talents there on both!

Thanks,

Maj . i appreciate your response here and on my other threads !Thank you Beer

As you know there are  better kits of this subject out there now , but alas , this one was the only kit available at the time many years ago . Its been hidden away in my stash , forgotten , until Eric invited me to join his Panzerjaeger G.B.

Gun is looking good Carl! Yes Are you deliberately leaving the rear half in panzer gray or will you be painting that in additional steps to come?

Nope , thats the final on the pak 40 camo .I wanted to add a little interest to to the paint scheme . My idea was that the 75mm pak 40 was painted Panzer gray and mounted on a wheeled carriage as was normal. (see below picture). When this sdk.fz 234/4 was completed there was no pak 40 at the factory to mount on it  due to a shortage . Hitler was screaming for more Panzerjaegers  to be sent to the front , so any Pak 40 not at the front already was requesitioned for use on the 234/4 .Due to time constraints  only the front of the shield and forward barrel were painted in camo . The inside of the rest of the hull will remain in red primer so the contrast should be interesting .
