Hey, this thread is great. Not only do we get a great WIP, but we get some humor, some history, and a few personal anecdotes to wash it all down. Ahhhhhh, could it get any better?

Hey Carl, I really like the effect you got on your tools. What are you painting/highlighting them with?

Good to read that you are enjoying the thread ! Icould be better if we had pizza and beer served while at the keyboard ..............i'm not even going to ask the wife . so i'll stick with my peanuts and a glass of water ......................

The tools , i started by painting them panzer gray over all , followed by Mode Master enamel wood on the handles . Over the wood i brushed a diluted/thin coat of Tamiya red brown xf64 to break up the overall wood color . For the metalic look i used a lead pencil and drew it on over the panzer gray . If it looks to shiney spray over it with some flat . Lastly i painted the straps with Tamiya dark yellow xf-60 . I also brushed on a mixture of thinned acrylic black and burnt umber with a sharp pointed paint brush to emphasize the recessed areas.Seems like a lot of steps but its what works for me .

I also wanted to add how much I am ENJOYING your build. Great camo on the paint job and a tutorial at every turn. your photography is very well done and that is important to me.. I hate blurry pics... makes me think I've over done the meds again... ( that was humor.. I am actually very careful.. just in case the kiddies are tuned in)

On the MG, I agree its hard to tell, butt (lol) to me, I think for sure some were wood.. it is really a part that could be easily built either way depending on who was supplying the part and the availability of bakelite which in a tough time for petroleum plastic manufacturing could have been suffering.

on to my favorite part : the wheels....I know lots of guys give the tip to use a cut out circle or draftsman circle tool or you could use just some piece plastic cone cut to the perfect size as you did.... all of that ain't my point....my point is , regardless of the short time taken, the wheels came out PERFECT. and sometimes, perfect is enough... ( again ... a tiny bit of humor 'cause secretly I believe it is all modelers dream or goal).

I Love the looks of those freekin wheels , and I am anxious to see the completed vehicle.....

Here's a couple of pictures of MG 42's that i used as reference . Note the butt stock color . It could be painted bakelite or painted wood . And there are pictures of the butt in wood color also but i chose these .

FYI , Dr. Baekeland announced his invention ,Bakelite , in 1909 .

Got this done tonight and i'm satisfied with the results . I never tried the method i used on this before but it all worked out well .................imo.

muffler looks very realistic, could maybe use a bit more texture,but I like it .

Aw Shell, on the muffler, you'll be a better man for it and it'll make the back end  really stand out and have a super cool point of interest. ! ... my theory is to try and treat each piece as an individual model.. you have put so much great work in already, really redoing a muffler will be a cake walk for ya...yer probably done already!  lol .... I don't under stand about the harbor freight add : (

If you can get ahold of RustAll you'll never regret it. If it needs to be rusty RustAll is the best bet.

Real nice work on the interior, and a nice color scheme too.

I can tell you that Aberdeen had one of these vehicles in its warehouses, and I got a tour of them about 20 years ago, and got photos of the interior of this beast. The interior WAS partly primer red. Not ALL, but parts were. I'd post some pics of it, but I'm in the middle of moving and all my stuff is packed!

Bill , i'm ok now , new day .......new challenges . I tried several different metods with the rusty mufflers and spent about 3 hrs on them . Bot hey , it was fun and i picked up a few new methods .Some times i get in a rush to get done and regret it .

Oh, yeah!!  That qualifies as a model in and of itself.

How do we know if it is not an 1:1 scale mufflers?  They look great... way too real I am telling you!  What did you use to create the surface texture? 

I'm jumping in a tad late on this post,, BUT, the build is looking very good Carl. Excellent attention to detail.

And, the subject matter is great too... I like it!

O.K. !.... now how about just a hint of soot blow back around the exhaust pipe itself?.. ain't I a ballbuster ?

Tread , are your referring to the exhaust pipe itself or the muffler surface behind / below it ?

just a very tiny bit at the pipe. outlet itself....I read somewhere that the Germans ran their engines a bit rich in the fuel mixture..helps cool the combustion chamber, but results in sooty deposits at the exhaust exit.

if you really want to get technical about it, the inlet pipe to the muffler could use a touch of brighter orange because it is the hottest part of the exhaust, the metal oxidizes faster which results in fresh bright rust....but just a hint.... stay on the conservative side. Hope I'm helping not hurting... It feels very odd to me to give advice to anyone... as I work on my models , they are always in a constant state of a new experiment... really well established modelers like Bill P, Redleg,Steve (DM) Doog Wingnut.YOU. these guys built many more models than I...
