I keep having to chose between my family, work, responsibilites, and my hobby(s). My hobbies keep coming up short. Baby on the way and the busy season for us at work are taking their toll on me. I have the Avenger's saucer upperside assembled and primed. The underside parts are done I just need to put them together and prime them. Hopefully tonight I'll work on the neck.

Laugh [(-D] I think everyone has been busy with things other than modeling. I got myself all tied up with work and then sickYuck [yuck] or was that sick of work??? Still can't get my decals right so I've held off on painting. Not sure what one has to do with the other but...

Good news, found warp engines in the form of Uni-ball gel pens.........perfect shape. Cutting them into the hull today. Now just need to find more epoxy putty.

Been distracted lately.

Started rereading Graves' I, Claudius and got so caught up in it that I couldn't stop reading! Blush [:I]
That is one great read! Haven't read it since college twenty years ago. I had forgotten how good it is!

Finished a day ago and got back into the Klingon D-6. The wings are now changed to fit Masao's plans. Should start on the belly very soon!

Thanks much. Too bad they don't sell out there back door, they're only about 20 minutes down the freeway.

They are under "VHH" as the prefix. On the site, click catalog, "V," and then page scroll 'till you get to the VHH stuff...

No problem Steven. Hey try Tap Plastic if there is one in your area, they have clear acrylic halfs in almost any size you could need.

Just recieved aircraft parts from Matt today( thanks a heap, Matt, I really appreciate it) and can't wait to integrate them. Thay look very promising. I made warp engines but need 1/2" domes for the tips............any suggestions? I thought I had them from some game pieces but they turned out to be polyethylene.

I based my schematics on those printed in the Star Trek Magazine, the side view in the encyclopedia, and on photos of the model in the Art of Star Trek and the Star Trek Chronology. There aren't many sources out there. The schematics in the Magazine were pretty bad, and didn't match up on the different views. My schematics probably aren't 100% accurate either; in particular, I think the neck is mounted to high on the secondary hull. I didn't think anyone was going to build off of them. As mentioned previously, the windows suggest that Daedalus isn't as small as 100 m.

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/scans/sfvarious1.htm I think those things are circles.

MASAO: I did the math and it all comes out to be 1/500th plus or minus a meter. I just don't understand why it fits with a 1:40 scale viewport. Oh, well, it looks like my Daedalus will be a little over 7 inches. One question about the back where the landing bay is (I think it is the landing bay) are they squares or circles that go around in the circular pattern? The jpeg is a little distorted.

StevenQ: The quake was way down south, so we didn't feel a thing. We only found out about it much later on the news.

Snoopy: the total length of the scale bar is 50 m.
I scaled Daedalus according to the starship chart in the Star Trek Encyclopedia. It comes out to about 100 m, but I don't trust that figure completely.

I like to use this little downloadable program to figure scale. http://www.starshipmodeler.com/tech/scalemaster.htm

Profksergeev: I may not have the scaling right excatly. I usually don't draft in metric and mostly the stuff I draft is civil/topographic maps. This is how I came up with the scale. I printed a jpeg from Starfleet Museum with the metric scale bar, imported it into Autocad, aligned it to a line drawn the size of the scale bar (the length was converted into inches, 169.5 ft. approximately = 164 ft.) and then viewed in through a viewport set to a 1:40 scale. After printing on an 11X17 drawing, it comes out to be 1"=40'. It should come out to be approxiamtely, 7.8" long. I took the metric scale bar as the total length is 50 meters. I someone thinks my math is wrong please let me know. I always have missed how scaling is done so I rely a lot on the computer.

I am hoping on getting all my materials by the end of next week. I hope mine comes out looking half as good as yours does. The is one section from looking at the drawing that I have not figured out how I am going to get the deflector area done. More pondering time:)

Masao: One the multi-orhtographic drawings, the total length of the scale bar is 50 meters, not just one segment, correct? In Autocad (model space if fimiliar with autocad) everything I did was to make the drawing actually a 1:1 life size (approx. 346 ft.). Let me know if my dimension from the primary hull (sphere) to the end of the nacelles.

2) It's made of plastic tubing; no metal turning was involved.

3) I'm using Plastruct acrylic hemispheres for the primary hull.

Please post progress pics of your Daedalus once you get it started. Despite its ungainliness, the Daedalus is one of my favourite Trek designs.

Thanks, Scott.

Masao, hope you all weren't near that big quake and all is well. Living in SoCal we are quite familiar with shakers.

MASAO, The designs you have come up with and others that are in the Starfleet Museum look great. When I was 10 or so (so long ago) I would try to sketch up starships based on Star Trek and Star Wars trying to come up with my own civillization. So where okay and some not so good. Every now and then by reading FSM, I pick up my T-square, pencils, and triangle and try to come up with different things. Yes, even through I am a computer draftsman, I still long for the days of a T-square. I think by using a pencil for sketches, that is where the magic comes from:) Again, great work. After this first scratchbuild and my confidence rises, i will actually start to build the fleet more.

I stopped using my t-square, drawing board, and erasing shields about 10 years ago, but the first versions of some of my ships were drafted with paper and pencil. Even though I do all my drawing on a computer now, I still do a lot of sketching with pencil. In fact, I carry a little sketchbook with me wherever I go, ready to record interesting shapes or ideas. A lot of the preliminary work, mostly getting the massing and proportions, are done on paper.

Amen! Have fun. Everyday life is serious enough, this is our escape.

And now a little off topic but along the lines of what Scott was talking about, coming up with different ships, I managed to dig up an old "conversion" I did years ago. I "saw" a shape in the SW Speeder Bike and made this Rebel-type transport:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/ussarcadia/IMG_0229.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/ussarcadia/IMG_0230.jpg

It was a little tweaked in a move, I'm thinking of restoring it.

Scott this GB is set to end in June but don't worry about the deadline too much. I still haven't finished my last build!Dead [xx(]Tongue [:P] I read what others post about GB particapation and how GB badges are a reward and I just kind of shake my head. To me a GB is about fellowship based on something we share in common and love. Just join in and have fun. Big Smile [:D]

Profksergeev: Very nice work so far. I am still ordering raw materials for my build. I do have a few question if you don't mind?

1) What scale are you making yours? Mine, if done right, will be approximately 1/40 scale. That is what yours looks like if not a tad bit smaller.

2) From your pics, I was wondering if you made yours from turned down metal and plastic? The couple of pics where it is black gives it a metallic look. I was planning on making mine from plastic tube and round stock for the nacelles. I have an idea for all basic shapes except the front part of the deflector shield array (I think that is what it is) coming from the back body to the spherical hull. Right now it has me stumped.

3) What are you using for the spherical hull? I see a hemisphere in one pic and was wondering where you got that from? Last night while search for spheres and domes (been searching for weeks actually) I came across a website for FX supplies and they had an assortment of hemispheres in all different sizes. I believe the website is www.fxsupply.com they are based out of Utah in the United States for anyone looking for hemispheres. They are the cheapest I have seen anywhere. I believe a 3" hemisphere is about $4.00 dollars (US). I have seen other places wanting $30.00 to $60.00. Theses spheres look good also for the round section of the nacelles.

At first I was getting worried that I would not be able to attempt this scratching building group build, feeling out of place but things are starting to come together. Next week I should be able to actually start putting something in place. It is rough not having a lathe or mill to do some of these parts with.

When does this group build finish? Sometime next year:) Just kidding, i think I will be close to done by June, I hope.

Everyones looks great, I love Star Trek ships.
