I finally figured out what to do with my model.  create a diorama..yep.

I built a *ways* from strip redwood..1/8" and mounted and supported the CS...then I decided I would create a ficticious scene where she was getting her gurry rigged rudder replaced...a ficticious scene based on actual events.  I will also make replacement of some copper sheets being depicted as well.

Fun fun fun.

pictures will follow later.

I'll take the liberty of making a small suggestion.  (I wouldn't do it if it wasn't an easy fix.)  The rudder pintles and gudgeons on a copper- (or Muntz metal-) sheathed ship can't be made out of iron.  When iron and copper (or Muntz metal) are put in contact with each other and submerged in salt water, galvanic corrosion takes place and the copper dissolves.  Pintles and gudgeons on such ships have to be cast from either copper or bronze.  (I don't know whether Muntz metal can be cast into such shapes or not; I guess it probably can.)

Shipwrights made this discovery in the early days of copper sheathing.  They nailed the sheathing plates in place with iron nails.  After a few months the sheathing plates started to fall off, because corrosion had eaten away the material adjacent to the nails.  From then on, shipwrights used copper spikes for the purpose.

So the pintles and gudgeons should be the same color as the surrounding sheathing - not black.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Thanks for the fine observation...I know about the disimilar metal issue..but chose(through license) to paInt the pintles nd gudgeons black...a detail most will never be aware of and less familiar with the metal issue.   Thanks a lot.

I enjoyed building the ways and detailing them along with weathering them.....I had fun.  I think it looks good too.

Nice to see the depliction of the busted rudder event.  Can you imagine doing that at sea with the weight and seas running? Wooden ships - Iron Men

I did further research and I will wash over the pintles and gudgeons with a green/brown wash to discuise them as bronze.  Thanks for the *clue*.

I worked in the jury rudder control..which was done via outboard blocks and rope/chain attached to the rudder.  This side is still intack and tide off at the ways........

That is beautiful work madcitydave. The 1872 photo of CS in drydock for the new rudder shows that she has crosed the Atlantic a few times. Do you plan on weathering your model?
