Lol. You are a hoot sir!

To the left of the black line are 12 sheets of TP. To the right are 5 sheets. You guys can judge for yourselves what you think is better.

Man, this sound's like a TV commercial from the 50's.  L O L

Bakster
The trick is finding one that does not have patterns in the paper.

Scott brand TP has no texture to it,... but it's "Thin" so might not work. ( but it's the TP of choice for throwing at "The Rocky Horror Picture Show. )

4 out of 5 Indian's surveyed " DONT"  chose John Wayne TP.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

TP TEST PART 2

To the left of the black line are 12 sheets of TP. To the right are 5 sheets. You guys can judge for yourselves what you think is better. I am leaning to the 5 layers. There is one thing for sure about the 12 layers side that I don't like. There is an odd effect happening with this paper where it is creating wrinkles. Much of that is not intentional. And with each successive sheet the problem seems to compound. It may not be all that noticeable in the image, but in the right lighting, it is very noticeable. I suspect it has to do with this John Wayne paper being so thin and such. So--I have 1 more test that I will run. I will try finding a thicker brand of TP and see how that works. The trick is finding one that does not have patterns in the paper. That is not so easy. I had a heck of a time when I tried last.

Anyway-- this is not that big an issue. I think the 5 sheet side is acceptable, worst case. But, as long as I am testing, why not try it.

Btw. Smoothing out Sculptamold seems to work. I laid a new test swatch layer as before and I waited about 15 minutes for it to set a bit. I then dunked my index finger in water and began to rub the surface of the clay. It smooths easily. I am letting that dry before I call it a success. I will post an image with my next update.

Sculptamold is neat stuff. Bakster is giving it a thumbs up. Yes

That's all for now.

Ah... very good Steve. When the Capn said a bug boil... I had conjured up images of southern fried cockroaches. Cray sounds much better.

Thanks you two.

Yay! Your'e on a roll! Big Smile  Seriously, (and this is real hard to do), there are model squids availible that I saw being discussed somewhere, which would spare you from digging through all that calimari looking for the perfect specimen to cast. Just sayin'.

Maxie----This is fun! BTW, try those squid fried with an extra cold Corona mit der lime.

Today I tested applying the TP/PVA layer onto my Sculptamold test swatch. In this test I wanted to observe two things:

1. How well will the TP reduce the roughness of the Sculptamold?

2. How well will I be able to tamp down the edges where the TP layers meet?

As for point 1: It does greatly reduce the roughness. The formula that I am following calls for 4 layers of paper. I decided to make it 5 layers because of how thin my paper is. Maybe, I need to add more. I will probably test that on the other side of the swatch. I'd like to see just how far I can go with it and to what outcome.

As it is right now... I think that I can live with it. Adding paint and clear will smooth things even more. I will try adding another dose of thinned PVA too. I will wait for todays work to dry before I do.

As for point 2: This issue is something that I was greatly disappointed with on my last go. You may recall that in that process I tried not to flatten the paper down. The reason was that I was able to get more interesting patterns by randomly soaking the layers, and, to let the paper do its own thing. I did not have a wave layer beneath the paper as I am doing now. The problem I had encountered is raised joins at each paper connection. THAT--was a problem. It was very visible. Using acrylic gel I tried to blend things, with only moderate success. I was not able to completely get rid of them. This was a lesson learned.

So--from what I observed today, I don't think that I will have this problem again. Though I have not actually tested butting the paper together--I observed the edges disappear when tamped down. I'll make sure of this when I do the other side. I didn't do it today because I wanted to give you a visual of before and after.

Lastly--a strong tempest blew in recently causing the seascape to veer off into another direction. The storm was of such magnitude that it was assigned its own name. That name is none other than, Maxie.

Oh yes, Max. This boondoggle is on you. LOL. You are gonna get your squid. Or at least, that is the plan until something stops me. Not only will this be a fun thing to do--but--it solves a problem regarding the bow light. It was really bugging me that I had to settle  on burying the light underneath the wave layer.

What I hope to do is this. The menacing squid will wrap one of its tentacles around the hull, and by its sheer weight... pulls the stern down, and the bow goes up. This will raise the bow light above the waterline. It will be a challenge to make it look believable.

Boondoggle# 2 is about be served! I hope you all like squid. I don't have a taste for it. LOL. Yes

I grab a second fish and look into the holding tank. What do I see? Someone put a white paper bag in the holding tank.

Want to hear a funny story? This is no joke. I actually dreamed this dream last night.

I dreamed that I was emptying an aquarium of water. I think the plan was to move the fish into another tank. So... I am emptying this thing and I realize that I took a bit too much water out There was barely 3 inches of dirty water remaining, and my fish were still in it. So I start taking the fish out one by one into a holding tank. By now, there are several fellers around me that are helping. I grab a second fish and look into the holding tank. What do I see? Someone put a white paper bag in the holding tank. I'm thinking... who is the dumb BEEP. I lift the bag and the bottom is soaked. So I am thinking. If someone was this stupid to put a paper bag into a tank of water--I had better make sure no one put any fish in the bag. I look in the bag and what do I see? Fish! Dagnabbit!

You draw your own conclusions of this dream. But it sure sounds a bit like this thread. Beer Cheers!

Ah, Durham's.  Was all the rage back in the 90s.  Was cheaper than Celluclay, more widely available, was even adhesive (sort of).  Did not have a smooth texture like celluclay, either, and slightly less porous, if memory serves.

Mind, most of my Durham's experience was packing it around plumbing penetrations in fire-rated walls, and not to recieve static grass or the like Smile

What to make a squid from?  Probably RTV Big Smile

Well.......

You"could" mount the sub in an aquarium, .... Then get an actual Squid,....

Would save yourself some time...... ( It's already "animated" ....... Just keep feeding it !)

Now there is a novel idea. And I could scrap this whole seascape business because it is already in one. Hmmm.
