Bakster The mind is a terrible thing to waste.  I keep mine "pickled" in a jar .... for future kit - bashing project's.

I dont sit at the computor that much . Usually after dark when there's no point in being outside ( or in my "DARK" shed.) I come online from 5 PM till around 8 PM. This will change when I harness the power of electricity in the shed.

( I'm not waiting for anybody .... I'm just here. ) What ... You dont like being "Stalked" ?

As for my comp ....er ... Rock with letter's on it, I did manage to figure out a way around my issue. For now.

What is the backstory of the sub image?

That sub U-217 mean's a lot of thing's to me.

1: It's the first model in a long time that turned out "perfect" the first time. ( I have NO IDEA how I pulled that off !)

2: In my reasearch on the subject I fell in love with the "splinter camo" she wore. It just looked right. 

3: It was the first sub in a long line of sub's that I have built (15 so far) and I plan on building all 760 Type VII sub's that saw combat ( I will be done sometime in the year 2368)

Not a GB project, however. I do plan on doing a Revell 1/72 scale "Flakboot" for the next sub group build ( whenever that happen's .)

( sniffiling like a blubbering idiot... )    No, not yet.  However the wife has decided that she need's to help ( translation: give me some time to myself.) so she bought me another power strip, a light fixture, AND   (drumroll please) a new bench from Harbor Freight that comes with a light and another powerstrip! So I will have a total of 18 outlet's in "LittleTimmy's House Of Miniature's"

We will be "going to town' next Saturday to pick it up.

Watch.... she will figure out a way to make me stare at it, in it's box. for the next month.

 

I have two more questions for you. For the record, you don't have to spend your night replying, just whenever. 

1. How did you come out with your computer? Did you get new squirrels? New computer?

2. I hope I didn't ask this already. What is the backstory of the sub image? Cool looking. Did you build that in a GB? She is a beauty. Sorry if I asked this already. The mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Speaking as someone who has only done Turf / Foliage / Dirt / Treee's , I can't offer any "usable" advice on Water.

But I do know : Darker color's first. Followed by lighter color's. That's what give's you the "Illusion" of depth. I believe you're on the right path.

( all this talk of Mint Green makes me think of Mint Jelly .... which makes me think of roast Lamb .... which remind's me that I get seasick . So "Apperently" Mint Green paint makes me seasick.)

Can't wait to see where you go with this. I am still taking note's.

Really cool Bakster.  I think I can see where you are going as you have described it.  Should be very realistic.  Keep up the great work.

 

Thanks, Mark. It is still in the rough and I don't know if I have the "Right Stuff" to pull it all together. THAT--is the journey.

Update 2/18/18:

I am loosely following Chris Flodbergs process of painting seascapes. He applies a layer of mint green paint to mimic the subsurface churn created by a ship. He uses different paints than I used, and this is where we begin to diverge. I have no reason for this other than paint availability, and what I like to work with. In my case, I used a touch of Tamiya clear green mixed with Tamiya white. I used maybe three drops of green to get the shade shown below. It does not take much. 

Below: Here is how I laid it out. I see some areas that I might adjust. I will probably wait until after I lay the next layer. This is where I diverge from Chris too. If you recall, I am adding a layer of Tamiya clear blue over the base of blue. In testing this had added some depth to the water. I thought that it might be cool to try applying the mint green below the top layer of clear blue. This may add some interesting depth. Then--I might add touches of mint green on top of clear blue. Afer that, I will apply the rayon fibers to simulate the sea froth. That is how I see this going. 

Oh--you will notice that I added mint green around the border of the frame. I plan to simulate waves breaking against the frame too.

Except, see, I have a secret weapon:  Joe T Garcia's.  Legendary TexMex, and the wait for a table is much assuaged by a pitcher of the equally famous Margaritas.

Oh, and don't tell anyone, but Gruene ("Green"), Texas is home to culture, antiques, river tubing, of and a wine tour or six.  Oh, and you have to drive past near a half-dozen wineries just getting from the Austin airport down to New Braunfels.

Thanks Tim. I am pretty happy with how the model came out, BUT, I am far less hopeful about the seascape. I am not very happy with it.

I have a little story to tell. I wrote the above a few days ago primarily because of something that I noticed happening. The base had become seriously warped. I had noticed a slight warp a few months back but I wrote it off as the frame being warped, and I never noticed it when I bought it. When I looked at it the other day, it was much much worse. I knew then that something else was going on.

When you look at it from the side it arched downward in both directions, like a bow, from the center of the frame. I was mystified. That frame is pretty dang strong and I could not understand why it would warp like that. I deduced that it had something to do with the epoxy, and or, the glues that I used. The plexi had a bow to it too. On a whim--I started pressing down on the plexi. As I did that, I could hear a cracking sound. I figured what the heck, I have nothing to lose at this point. I moved around the plexi doing the same, and getting the same reactions. I thought, "Hmm. Let's see what happens now."

Within 24 hours the frame returned to its original orientation. WOW! I never would have seen that one coming. The model gremlins almost did me in with that. There is no outward damage that I can see. Time will tell if the gremlins have another card up their sleeve.

My best guess is the epoxy that I laid somehow caused the glass to warp, causing it to pull on the frame. See below where I laid the epoxy. I didn't think to image the warp before I messed with it.

Suddenly--I have more optimism for the base.
