Mopar Madness

Joe, that Condor is a nice kit!

Thanks for the validation Chad. It looks to be a sweet kit when I opened it up.

EJ - I’m willing to bet the internal components on the generic brand are quite similar if not the same as those in a more expensive brand.

I just back from a vacation to the Seattle area and was thrilled to find these wonderful items waiting for me that arrived while we were gone.

Scored these from FB auction:

And then I purchased these off ebay. I have been wanting to get this series of books for quite some time and decided to finally pull the trigger on them. The destroyers, submarines and battleship books were fairly reasonable. The cruisers book on the other hand cost a fair $$. It is worth it though. They are really wonderful books. I've also got the carriers book on the way.

Been looking at power mitre saws recently. Got the one from Harbor Freight for $34.99. I liked the looks of the Proxon, but the price of $250.00 was a bit much for the use I would get out of it.

The one I got, I made a table for it with side extensions. The first test cut was of some very cured hard maple, 3/8" X 3/8". The saw bogged down some about 1/2 way through the cut, but if I fed the head down slowly, it worked ok.

I took it into the model room and made some test cuts on balsa up to 1/2" X 3/8" and some basswood strips 3/16" X 1/8" and it worked beautifully.

I'm working on a Balsa Guillow's DC-3 and starting a Model Airways Wright Flyer with basswood strips up to 3/16" X 3/16" and can see that this tool will be fine for my needs in the model room. If I need anything heavier, I have a fully equipped cabinet shop out back where I earned my living for over 45 years.

Nice one Chad, i was looking at that kit on scalemates a few weeks back. I seem to be taking more interest in pre 1990's British armour. I wish they would get the damn Saracen released.

Found this little guy this week for less than 1/2 the original cost. Looks to be a fun little build and certainly much less complicated than the 1/24 scale haul from last week.

John, a few fit issues around the canopy/fuselage/intake that require a lot of sanding, but overall a delightful kit!

stikpusher, The ZTZ-99A seems to share a lot with the T-72 and also western tanks. The main gun and auto loader are Russian copies. The engine is a reversed engineered German MTU 87. Which I believe is what’s used in the Leopards but I may be incorrect. Of course the hull is more a less a T-72 hull just one meter longer. The ERA is a copy of the Russian Relikt reactive armor. The tank seems to be a major step up from previous Chinese tanks but I’m not sure how well it would do against the Abrams and Leopard 2. Some sources state with the Relikt armor the ZTZ-99 has the same armor protection as the Abrams. But after diving into Chinese tank development it seems like they are still a generation behind most other nations. I think they are introducing another armor package and a different main gun sometime this year next year that “should” make it more on par with western tanks. I’ll stop now and get back on topic.

Gamera, I looked at ordering some of the PLA figures from China but went with Meng. The main reason the Meng set cost the same as two resin figures. Also I haven’t had the best luck ordering figures from China lately. I had one figure arrive that missing a chunk of his arm.

Yeah, nice stuff there Greysnake. I have that same ZTZ-99A kit in my stash, it looks like a very nicely done kit. And cool figures, I've got a couple of the resin sets of PLA tankers and infantry, most of them I ordered direct from China off Ebay.

Those are some good scores Grey Snake. The Sherman is a real beauty of a kit. The PLA stuff looks interesting. The tank is apparently their version of the T-72, much like the current T-90 family, with Chinese additions and upgrades.

Here are my purchases from the last couple weeks. I have one package coming from Dragon's online store that hasn't shown up yet. Thanks FedEx!

Found this Dragon Sherman on eBay for really cheap. The seller listed it as used and nobody was bidding on it really. Sent a message to the seller and asked if it was complete and in reply was told it was. In the end with shipping it was around $35US. Not bad considering what 1/35 Dragon kits cost at retail now.

Next up is this Hobby Boss ZTZ-99A. I’ve been wanting a PLA armor model for awhile and finally pulled the trigger. It looks like an interesting kit and you don’t see a lot of PLA armor built. This is also my first Hobby Boss kit and I’m very impressed with how it looks.

Since I got the ZTZ I figured it could do with some crew figures. This is the first item I’ve purchased from Meng and I’m impressed with the molding of the figures. I do believe this is the only plastic set of modern PLA tank crewmen on the market right now. Everything else is resin which there are only a handful.

No shame in that.  I’m a sucker for loose Eduard decals!!! I’d snatch them up too.

How are Eduard decals? I’ve never used them.

I've used them on a couple of kits and not had any issues either. never thought of looking on e-bay for kit decals sets, but i guess its pot luck getting a set you want.

The suprising thing is that Eduard does not make a Hawk 75 or MS-406 in 1/48. Only Hobbycraft does... or did. I have another Eduard sheet for Soviet aces, La-5, La-7, and P-39s. At least Eduard makes the La-7 and P-39 kits.

Honestly, they rival most aftermarket sets.  I use Micro products and have never had a bad experience.  They go down as well as the Cartograph sets IMO.

Well the sheet does have a Propagteam label, so the quality reputation makes sense. So by that measurement, these are a steal. Microscale/Superscale sheets have not been this price in decades...

Wow... just wow at all the treasures that you guys are posting on here! Simply great stuff!

I barely feel worthy with this Edhard 1/48 1940 French Campaign Aces set that I found for a great price on eBay...

These just followed me home this week I’m not kidding!

I know the Meng Shilka is better than the Dragon but I couldn’t pass it up at what it was priced at. Also bought a Russian tank commander that’s probably going into a T-80 I bought a couple weeks ago. Think the Shilka will be marked for East Germany.

Next was the Tamiya Pershing. I’ve wanted to build a WWII era US tank and didn’t have any in my collection. I’ll most likely be starting it pretty soon once I clear a couple in progress builds off the shelf.

Won the auction for this on eBay today. It's the first boxing from 1980, which was a rebox of Esci's 1978 AJ-37 Viggen kit, with new parts to make the JA-37 Jaktviggen. I know there's a much better 1/48 Viggen kit out there now, but it's way too pricey for me. And I also know that Italeri has reissued the Esci Viggen, with all the parts from both versions in one box. But this will be a nostalgia build. I've wanted the original Esci kit since September 1990, when FineScale Modeler published two articles on the plane's splinter camo. (I have no idea why I've never picked one up before.)

In case anyone was wondering, I plan to put myself through Hell, and do the splinter scheme with masking tape. I'm up for big challenges these days.

Just picked up by my Father In Law from a local car boot sale. Really interested in the last one, with a Revell kit number of 00002 suggests it is the second one they did?

Stay safe........Steve

This  just showed up in the mail, A Monogram B-25 "gun boat" (release date 1991). All the parts are in the original bags. Nice!

I'll start on this after I finish my MIG 15.
