Damn dude! What town is that hobby shop in? I’ll be residing in AZ starting next year...

In Tucson called "The Hobby Place at Ace." They have a pretty good selection of of model kits and supplies. Prices are more or less what you would pay online. I usually only visit once a month or so as it’s a two hour round trip for me. They seem to be sort of an oddity as they carry zero R/C.  Only game in town other then Hobby Lobby after the HobbyTown went fully R/C.

I had completely forgotten that back in the 60's and into the 70's even, hardware stores often carried model kits. Another fun memory, thanks.

GS - Nice model of the 1/200 Arizona on the counter there.  Pic in gallery here.

PJ - Don't remember model, or even color anymore.  Was a 10 speed and had the drop bars on it.  Got to where I couldride upright and just steer with body shift most of the time.  Many times took a ride out to Junction City, about 13 miles from home, with long stops at the airport.  Think it was around $125 new.

Nice find PJ.  Takes me back to '71 when we moved to Eugene and I attended U of O.  Bought a new one to get around campus and town. Put many a mile on it.

Thanks GH. Which model was it?

Here are my acquisitions from late April till now.

Found the Swedish CV9040B at a second hand store complete andfor a steal. The Tiger I and E-25 were gifts from a friend. Everything else came from either my nearest hobby shop or eBay. Started on the Dragon Firefly already forgot how bad some Dragon instructions can be. Not to mention some of the attachment points on the sprue are questionable.

This weekend I got the new AFV Club 1/35 scale, M 728 ARV.  Looks like a nice kit, you get two turrets, one like their first kit with a heavy cast texture, and one without.  Also you get two sets of road wheels.  It comes in a large box.  I've been waiting for a model kit of this beastie for a long time.  Good on them!

Looks like I had the "English racer" wrong. I always thought they were lightweight frames and skinny tires (correct, maybe) with the inverted handlebars and 10 speed (back then). Looks like I had the last 2 things wrong. Getting things backwards has always been a common thing for me.

I still love your new bike, and sorry for getting off-topic, folks.

Greg

I remember back in the day, we called these 'English racers'. I never questioned why. I wonder if that still means anything?

That Schwinn looks very familiar and brings back memories. Glad it makes you happy, PJ.

Interesting Greg, I have never heard this term but rather ''racing bike'' instead. Now they are called "road bikes."

Here is what Wiki says:

In the United States, the sports roadster was imported after World War II, and was known as the "English racer". It quickly became popular with adult cyclists seeking an alternative to the traditional youth-oriented cruiser bicycle.[7][9] While the English racer was no racing bike, it was faster and better for climbing hills than the cruiser, thanks to its lighter weight, tall wheels, narrow tires, and internally geared rear hubs.[7] In the late 1950s, U.S. manufacturers such as Schwinn began producing their own "lightweight" version of the English racer.[7]

Ok, this one is not model related but it's one of my other hobbies and I'm SUPER exited to have landed this beauty! I found this 1974 Schwinn Le Tour in Craigs List  about 40 minutes away from my home here in Orlando for a mere $75. The bike is 45 years old and is almost in mint condition. The previous owner maybe rode it a couple of times. The original brake pads are brand new and there's like 8 nicks on the paint which is bright glossy red. The original gum wall tires had melted on to the chrome rims from being stored in a hot storage shed for many years. It took me two days of careful scraping and polishing with 0000 steel wool to get the rims cleaned up. I had never seen tires melting this way! The rest of the chrome needed  light rubbing with the steel wool to shine it up again.

I did a little research and Schwinn began to manufacture some of their bikes in Japan in the 1970s. My 23" frame was made by Panasonic in July 1974 and all parts are Schwinn stamped. I went on ebay and ordered the tires, tubes and liners along with blood red colored cork handlebar tape. Geez I was 17 years old when this bike was made and I'm 64 now!

I'm really exited to have found this bike in this original condition. Many times, these old Schwinns need to fe repainted and have many parts replaced due to wear, rust , etc. The color was called Schwinn Opaque Red but I call it bright blood red, a real beauty. I used some wide painter's blue tape to protect the rims while the tires arrive.

Just for fun, I just bought the newish Starship Discovery, NCC-1031 in 1-2500 scale, by Polar Lights.  I like the new show, and I'm getting real used to the new ship designs.  For beginners, it can be snap tight.  It also includes decals for the paint job.

I think that new design is pretty darn cool.

Some Airfix acquisitions and something with 4 wheels and an obscene amount of torque.

Gee, a week and no one has bought anything!?!?

Anyway, I have been waiting for over a year for this. Dragon had it listed as being out about a year ago and I pre-ordered it. So finally HobbyLink Japan gets it! Christmas in June!!!

It's friggin' huge! The hull is about a foot / 300mm long!

The S-35 was on sale so I added it to the shipment. Looks like a super nice kit.

And this finally came in:

Not much of a cat person but still the figure is pretty cute. The tail comes as a separate part:

Great haul there Cliff.

Nostalgia rules! Recently purchased:

One of the first models I built as a child - purchased with my own money ($1.49) when I was 11. The Jo-Han Chrysler Turbine. Original 1965 "brown box" issue. I won't be putting this together. I like to open the box and just look at those beautifully colored parts. Memories! (The kit's tires were completely deteriorated, so I've added some '60s whitewalls from Moebius Models to the box.)

Pegasus Moonlander. I have always loved this (and all the other Bonestell / von Braun spaceships of the 1950s). So glad someone finally produced an injection kit of the subject.

Timmy: What an awesome and unique score you got there. I particularly like the Robert E. Lee. That is certainly a wonderful subject. The HO stuff is also a cool score.  I'm gladyou shared that on here.

Gamera: Thanks. The fact that it seems the nicest 1/72 B-17 out there is precisely why I snagged it. When I got it at the LHS, the owner was telling me what a sweet kit it is and that I was fortunate to grab  it as he was currently unable to get any more due to availability.

Harkening back to the nostalgic, I looked to pick up a 1/72 Williams Bros. C-46 Commando. Yet another fun kit I built when I was a young 'un. I ended up winning both of these on ebay. From what I understand, the one in the newer box, the first one, actually has a remold of the interior floor that has better fit. The original was a bit short in width.

And then this caught my interest on the FB auction and managed to win it for cheap. Really cool subject and appears to be a rather nicely molded kit:

Those are some awesome choices guys!!!

Joe: Love the Airfix 1/72nd B-17G. Having built the new Revell Germany kit a few years ago I hear this kit is even better!

Tim: Nice haul! Hope you get your internet issues straightened out. I had to deal with some really bad wi-fi over vacation/holiday and seems I can't live without internet access...
