Gunny's been in a bad mood ever since Andy called him a Zombie . Cant blame him .His latest rant is that he wants the "duck bill" extensions taken off of the tracks . He doesnt like the idea of a tank "waddling" around HIS work bench !

The pile of "duck bills" .................quack ? Gunny says that Andy can have these cause he'll know where to put them ..........Whistling.

After i get the dozer attachments built i want to be able to remove it so i can do the weathering on the running gear without anything blocking my access .

This is the blade support frame for the left side .First pic is the outside surface.

Inside surface .

And this is how it slides unto the bogey housings .

Now both sides are on and fit snuggly so i can finish building the rest of the blade components but it is still removeable .Yes

Carl,,,  very slick indeed !     That will look awesome when completed (looks pretty doggone awesome now).

And,,,,  am sure Gunny feels better after the duckbills were removed.....     nicely done

OK,,   as promised, here is a quick expose' on how I make palm trees.

Grab a stick from your backyard, woods or wherever. An appropriate diameter of course.

I found one easy enough,,,,,,  then cut it into length sections. Depending on how tall  you want your trees.

I wrap the "trunk" in cheesecloth. Once or twice around is plenty. I attach it with a mix of dilluted white glue.

Leave a little cheesecloth on each end,,,  I use this extra as a hanger to allow the trunk to dry. I use those little xacto clips - - clipping the extra cheesecloth and then hanging the trunk from my work desk. Use something to counter balance the clip (kit box, paint bottle, etc.)

Once the trunk dries, add a little more cheesecloth to the base of your tree trunk.,,,  to fatten up the base.

Slop on some more white glue mix.....

And let that dry.

Next is the new part for me,,,  I used to use Milliput but this time I am using Durham's Water Putty. I just use a little plastic cup to mix,,,,   you want it about the consistency of mustard,,, of which it looks a little like mustard. I slop it on with a little dowell. It doesn't have to be a thick coat and you don't have to be real neat with this application. Try to keep it semi-uniform however.

Hang the trunk again to dry. I typically use a day for drying time. I like to make sure these things are totally dry.

You can see how the extra cheesecloth, on the ends, comes in handy.

The cheesecloth also helps bind the water putty,,, especially for this next step.

Now I scribe some horizontal rings into the dried water putty. My scriber is nothing fancy, but it sure works for this type of effort.

The scribing might chip or gouge the putty here and there,,,  no worries,,  palm trees have that beat up look anyway.

No need to be real precise with the scribed lines either,,  enough coverage to give it the palm tree look.

The scribing is monotonous and it takes some time too. Be sure to scribe over a piece of scrap paper or newspaper as it is a little messy too. Typically I do this type of no-brain-needed work when I want some down time. Not having to think works well for me every now and then.

Once you are happy with the scribed trunk, you should seal it. I used Mr. Surfacer. I slopped it on, used the clips to hang and let them dry.

The trunks are now ready for painting and finishing.......

Even though this type of effort is a little boring, it sure does save some cash. A long time ago I bought 2 Squadron palm resin tree trunks and if I remember correctly they were about $10.00 ($5.00 each). I made 7 trunks for pennies....

Now I have to start on making some palm tree leaves........

Hope you liked the pics

Enjoy the ride!

Carl- That pile of duck bills would make a great coaster for BeerWink  So much work and details put on the dozer... can't wait to see the end.

Bill- Love them palm trees and your work is a work of master.  They look exactly like those palm trees.  Good having you back post updates! Yes

deafpanzer,  That is a good looking LVT, guessing it represents one that landed on Saipan, the first use of the -4; blue -4s were/are a rare sight from everything I have been able to dig up.  How comes your own LVT?

Shellback

,  That Sherman is looking good indeed, I too always found it less pain inducing to do as Gunny demanded.

BaBill212,  I’m going to have to try those palm trees in 1/72, very interesting.

Andy,,,  thanks, glad you liked

Deat,,  they can be made for any scale really. I've done some for 48th, 72nd and so on.....  if there is one drawback is that they take a little time,,,  I like to let the cheesecloth and the putty application(s) dry for 24 hours each.....    but you could easily do half a dozen in a few days.        If you give it a go, let me know what you think.

Enjoy the ride!

Deattillio- Not yet, but LVT kit is still on top of my wish list.  I saw couple at recent show but I had to nab that CyberHobby Tiger kit for only $45.  Those kits usually are sold at much higher prices especially on evilBay.  However there's a bigger show coming up next month in Auburn and I am sure I will find more LVT kits then.

Carl- You are going to laugh... spent nearly 8 hours on the road driving for last two days as I traveled down to a small city called Evansville.  I thought about Gunny few times and all of great jokes.  Thanks for keeping me awake!  I am so happy to be home!  Beer

deafpanzer,  If you hurry you can snag the AFV offering for less than $40 and the CyberHobby for just under $25.  Great Models is selling everything at 40% due to the purchase by Sprue Brothers and eventual move of the entire stock.  I snagged an Iwata airbrush and its accessories because 1) I did not think such a deal would return anytime soon and 2) perfect timing with tax return.  If I had more storage area and would not have opted for the airbrush I believe I would snag several more LVT and AAV kits.

Hey guys.  First I would like to thank all of you for keeping this GB going.  I have only scanned through and will have to go back and read and catch up.  The work that yall have been doing looks GREAT!  After reading all and taking a better look I will comment so more.  Second, I would like to apologize to all of you for being absent for so long.  Thats not a very good way to try to run a GB and I am a little disappointed with myself.  If yall want to know what I have been doing then read the next paragraph.

OK, enough of all of that!  Sat down for the last couple of hours and did some work on my LVT-4.  I have  not touched it in about month.  Only worked on the MG's tonight and this is how it went.

1919 .30 cal, replaced the kit supplied .30's with a spare Dragon one.  Cut off the barrel and added a RB Model barrel.  Used a mount, ammo can and ammo all from the spare parts box for mounting it.

When I had ordered the .30 cal barrels, I had ordered 2 but only 1 had showed up.  I am thinking for the other .30 mounting just the mount and maybe have the gun laying on the deck so that it is not as noticeable?  Not sure if I like that idea but dont know if I will be ordering another one right now.  Here is the mount mounted by itself.  Let me know what all of you think of this idea.

Both of the .50 made it here.  One is built and the other is still waiting to be built.  This is the part layout of the unbuilt one.  Scrap the kit supplied .50.  Extra 50 cal's  from another Dragon kit.  RB Model barrel and small PE set.  Kit supplied pintel.  cradle and ammo belt from spare parts box.

The built 50 cal same parts a listed above but also with scratch built early ammo box.  Still need to make one for the other gun.

Once again all, Thanks for keeping the build going and I will be going back through to read all of your work.  I do hope to be around more now but may still be just a few more days to take care of the loose ends here.

I think its really admirable how you are keeping everything going . I know , what choice do you have , right ? Still , its speaks volumes of your character on how your handling all of this . Take care . Man i'd be there helping you out if i was 1500 mi. closer .

Oh , the 50's are looking spectacular ! Think i'd mount both of them . Yes

Already said this but Man you guys are doing fine work!!!  Have a few more pages to read through and I will be caught up.  Look forward to getting back in here tomorrow.

PANZERWAFFE,  Sorry to hear about all the heartache and headache you are currently dealing with.  Hopefully a new start at Lejeune will commence more positively than the closing days in Texas.  Despite it all it hasn’t hampered your skills at the hobby, those machine guns look very good – no going back to kit plastic.  I would imagine that a missing machine gun was not an uncommon sight.

Got all the fiddly parts, kit and otherwise mounted onto “MARDI GRAS” and managed to get a coat of primer on her.  The cab and hatch came out better than expected.  I also shot some primer onto my Iwo Jima LVTA-4.  My second LVTA-4 received some attention on the port sponson and looks more accurate than what is molded.  It needs a little cleaning up and some scribing but is superior to excessively exaggerated bulkheads/beams within the sponson.

Nice work all!!  I have been away from bench for a bit travelling for that dang thing called work! But plan on hitting the figure this week, I have him primes and base coats set on.

I drilled holes in the support frame and in the dozer arms at the pivot points and then inserted "pins" made from styrene rod .

Guys- Sorry for being quiet... my body just crashed after working for 30 hours over the weekend even I had the day off yesterday but I was too tired to do anything.

Carl- I don't remember how much work you have put into a kit like this.  I really can't wait to see how it comes out at the end!!!  Always loved those pics of Gunny... Yes

Deattilo- Thanks for the head up!  I wish I can order but I have brought six kits in six weeks so I am pushing myself too far or my wife will give me the final 'evil stare'.  I am positive I will see AVT kits at upcoming AMPS National show in Auburn so I can pay cash because it is untraceable... Wink

Rob-  Hang in there my buddy!  Remember what did we say about the move... it was considered one of three most stressful time in our life times.  Hope it is for the best!  I am sure living in NC is better than Houston.  I spent 8 years in NC and I do miss it!

I am BIG fan of RB barrels too.  I like to replace all MG barrels with those brass barrels from RB if possible. Below is probably my favorite... used it on old Italeri M24 kit.

Just holler if you need somebody to talk with.  Remember to holler louder because I am profoundly deaf. Wink

I never did an wip on a Sherm here or anywhere else Andy so this is a new one for me . It seems i am putting more detail and effort into my builds since i started posting here on these forums and G.B. 's with you guys . Its the surrounding talent here that is causing me to put more into my builds now . I guess its like a competition in one way .........trying to put my best effort out on these forums . Then there is all of the info that is given and taken to/from our brothers on these forums . Its made a better model builder out of me for damned sure ! YesYesYes

Ooops , gotta go , Gunny found a loose part and wants it fixed NOW !

I've been working on the "A" frame that is part of the lifting mechanism forthe dozer blade ..Confused....it'll make more sense as the parts come together .

I scratch built these eyes that the "A" frame hinges on .

After inserting a "pin" to get things lined up i C.A.'d them in place .

Its a tight fit so i found it easier to insert the "pins" if the end is tappered .

Here's the "A" frame attached . Now it it positionable.

Soon this is going to be ready for paint .

Take care all ..................Yes

BEN - Hope your still hanging around.  Your Sherman came out great!  Camo scheme looks good and nice work on the dry transfers.  I am glad you went with yellow.  Sorry was not able to get back to you in time with the help I had offered with the numbers.  Some of the ones I had ordered did arrive but believe they would not have worked for you.  The only ones that arrived were the vehicle registration codes which would have been to small even for your 1/48.  Was you going to put an antenna on?

YES, collected your badge sir!  You deserve itYes

I'll update the first page with your completed pic Beer

CARL - Sooo much detail your putting in....not sure where to start on what I like.  Very Nice work.  Seems like Gunny is really keeping you on your toes.  The additional scratch work and detail on the blade is outstanding!  The extra work updating the older Tamiya kit is also very impressive.  Keep up the great work and don't get on Gunny's bad side BeerBeer

BILL - Love the jeep!!  The extra time with all of the body work and with some of the smaller delicate parts really payed off and made an excellent finish with the paint BeerThat radio really does look good back there.  What I really like is the driver and the trailer.  You see lots of jeeps but not so much of the trailers and it will add many possibilities within the diorama.  I would have to agree with the others about leaving the helmet off and just having it in the vehicle somewhere.  Nice little details on the Japanese fig and cant wait to see how you fit him into the dio Yes

You always here someone say "I'm going to try that" but I really do plan on trying out how you make your trees!!  I really like them and they look to be fairly easy too do.  Look forward to see how the palms come out.  Thanks for posting the how too Beer

Well with the jeep basically complete I could update the first page as completed or if you are going to keep on keeping on I can wait until the diorama is complete.  Let me know.

SKI - Have not forgotten about putting up some pics on the Iwo sand.  Will get them up very soon.

DEATTILIO - Thanks for wordsYes

Al of your LVT's are now really shaping up.  All of the work on the cab on your LVT-4 really looks good now Beer  Dont know how ya did it.  I had to really work through some areas with my 1/35 and you really did do a fine job especially for being 1/72.  I had also not realized how small it was until the picture of it next to your 1/35 tractor.   My hats off to you Yes  Have you figured out how you will be applying the name "Mardi Gras"?  Will you make a decal or hand paint the name onto the pontoons?

KEVIN - Would like too see your base coat on the figure if possible.  If not asking for too much would like to see the different steps in the figure painting area.  Have always found this to be interesting and instructive.  It seems people have many different ways to achieve there finish and you said you would be sing enamels, would like to see how that works.  Look forward to your next post and don't let them work you to much.

ANDY - As always, Thanks buddyYes  Your .50 looks outstanding also and have to agree, I really like working with the RB barrels also.  Looking at yours I now see what I missed on mine.  I did not put the PE front sight.  I saw the part but did not realize what it was for and I no longer have it for the one I already built.  Believe I will leave it off the other one I am going to make for this build so that they will both look the same.  I now know for future builds though Yes  Congrats on your victories at the show!  Very well deserved Beer  Now that I am getting caught up on things I will be checking in on that Stug your working on.

OK, I'm going to try to get some work done on the other .50 tonight and hopefully get the construction done on it.  Until next time.................Beer

Carl,,  I am very glad you did decide to stay with the Sherm / Dozer,,,,  what a great job!   Very much fun to watch it come together,,  excellent!

Deat,,,  the LVT is looking good,,,,,   can't wait to see the paint job

Andy,,,   glad you are back to feeling better too. I would say if you are feeling bad enough to keep you from the bench,, you MUST have really been wiped out,,,,  ,,,  stay healthy!  (luv those RB barrels)

Rob,,   first,, welcome back,,, second - -   sonofabiotch!,,,  what a string of shite luck,,,  dayum!   Hope everything goes well with the house, truck, med-issues, insurance, police, neighbor,,   etc.      You are due for some good luck now dammit...             The 50 cals look awesome,,  I will have to try them the next time I do a 50 (or 30).        Glad you like the palm trees,,,, I know we had discussed them a while back. I am working on scratchbuilding the palm leaves,,  not so sure I am entirely happy with them at the moment,,    I have a few other ideas for them, so we'll see.          As far as GB completion,,,   I guess the jeep is theoretically complete but I am still working on the overall scene.   I know,, I take forever with this stuff,,,  but I will still keep posting progress for as long as it takes me.      I did finish another Marine which I will post soon... his pose is going to fit in great with my scene idea....    hopefully some pics shortly.

Enjoy the ride!

(Quicker than I thought).......      A few pics of the 3rd Marine in the plan.....

Dragon Marines, Guadalcanal '42

A great set of figs ,,,   detail is good, most of the fit is good too. A few little spider veins,,, but nothing extrodinary.

A bit of sanding, filling and I did have to work a bit on the hands to allow the carbine to sit correctly.

The fig did turn out pretty well,,,  in my opinion that is - -

His "gaze" is upward,,,  lending the thought he could be checking for snipers (which is my intent).....  this should work well with my idea on the overall scene....

After posting these I did see another spider vein that I missed,,,  BUT, it took the magnification for me to notice,,,       grrr

No worries now however..........

Hope you like.......................

Enjoy the ride!

Hey there BILL, figure from that set looks really sharp.  Like his dangling helmet straps.  Nice paint and nice work with his hands and getting the rifle to sit correctYes  From what I can see also like the USMC on his pocket.  Did you use the Archer transfers?  That was one of the sets I had wanted to get, good to hear and see that it is a good one.  How many fig's are you planning for the diorama?

Will be watching for your palm leaves.  Have you ever used real vegetation?  You can dry and flatten the vegetation out in a book then shape and seal it with lacquer / clear coat, attach and paint.  Have not tried this for palms but have been successful with this technique with bushes and shrubs.  Might work for palms?

SKI - Still have too put something together to show the procedure making the Iwo sand but thought I would at least post some pics of the main ingredients.

All Scales Scenery

Close up of the actual grit.

This stuff is real easy to mix and use.  Just mix equal parts of water and white glue, pour in the amount of grit you would like.  Smaller amount of grit and more water/ glue for a muddier look and more grit and less water/glue for a more dry sandy look.

Something I like to sprinkle over the top of this, wait until the above mix is almost dry, is a little Quickcret.  You have to be really careful using this!! Once again make sure the mixture you sprinkle it over is almost completely dry.  If it is to wet the quickcret of course will turn to concrete and it will look so.  If sprinkled when the mixture is just damp to the touch it will stick, cure hard, and still look like a sand / grit.  Practice on something old first!

I keep a little quickcret in a baggy and use for various things when making dioramas.

LVT-4 update, it's a small one but progress has begun again Stick out tongue  Majority of the second .50 has been completed.  Still some small stuff to put on it but mainly just the ammo box remaining to be scratch built.

When I made that order a while back, I had also ordered some update sets for the LVT(A)1 and (A)4 and a RB Model .50 for the (A)4.

Was originally hopping to be able to build one of these for this GB but believe this will have to wait for now and just finish the LVT-4 I'm working on.  At least when I get to these I will have that much more stuff already here and ready to go.

Hi Rob,,,   thanks,,,  I added the helmet straps and yes, the fig actually has a debossed USMC pocket logo but I did use an Archer for the emblem...  ....  those doggone things are great!           My plan is to use 3 Marines and one Japanese soldier.....         :::::so sayeth the plan at this point anyhow:::::        ,,,,        Yes I have used real vegatation for many of my scenes and have been wondering if there was something applicable to use for palm leaves....  I am planning on visiting a floral shop and see if they will let me fish through their garbage can,,,,,,,

I really like your plan for the Iwo sand,,,   have not tried Quickcrete yet,,, will have to look into it.      Those 50's do look awesome...    And your extra additions will come in handy for any future builds for sure (I always like having extra's myself)

Enjoy the ride!

Bill- Outstanding work on the Marine!  Bet Gunny is going to be happy that he has a friend now...can't wait to start my build.  Am still swamped at work and I hope things will slow down before the spring break. I think I almost brought same kit at the recent show but I backed out.  Bad move...

Rob- Thanks for the tip about Quickcret!  Is that something we buy at Lowe's or Home Depot... those come in 25 lbs bags or so. Those LVT kits looks nice... now I am tempted. Tongue Tied

Carl- Nice work on the 'A' frame!  You see Gunny finally a friend now... what are we going to name Bill's figure?  Big Smile

Kevin- Looking forward to your pictures of the figure.  Gunny could use more friends!

Deattilo- Great process on your LVTs! Yes

Plenty of updates from you guys this week and I am enjoying this.... Beer

Hey guys Yes Really good to dee you all back again .

Bill very nice work on the figure . One of these days i'll order some newer figures , the new ones really have some nice details . Yes

Rob , i like the two 50's mounted like that . Looks like some awesome fire power ! That certainly wood be necessary for landing on an Japanese held beach and it sure would keep the enemy heads down . Have you thought about what the scene is going to be ? You said something about the Marines just hitting the beach dint you ? Maybe a couple of swabbbies manning the 50's with shell casings all over ?

Andy , i think Gunny is one of the rare China Marines that got out of Shanghai before Dec.1941 . He is a very stoic individual who remembers his brothers that were left brhind in China and caught by the Japanese to serve as slaves for the rest of the war . He respects his brother Marines and is there to help them out with his experience . However he is difficult to befriend since he has lost so many good friends already . His name for Bills figure ? Dont know yet .He's new here . Hmm
