Thanks Theuns, glad you like badge idea - I was going for something fun for a change.

Are Xtradecals availalbe at other webstores other than Hannants?

Yes, I've see a few of those Hawks built, and it really doesn't matter which livery there are adorned with, they really look sharp in the gloss black scheme.

regards,

Jack

Jack,

You might try Squadron.  I got mine through Hannant's several years ago.  They have a minimum order amount, but they ship to the States pretty quick.  If you're just ordering decals, the shipping wasn't too bad.

Buddy- Those who say there are no stupid questions have never worked in customer service.

Hi Theuns,

Re the Smer Tiger Moth, I haven't built it, but I owned the kit at one time, not sure if I still do :)

It's clearly from an old mold, but I am not sure of the heritage. It looked pretty basic. I seem to recall something about it being 1/50.

Sorry I can't tell you more.

Regards

Tony

talentless

they are by Xtradecal 7-8 quid a set in 1/48. they do other sets too so you are spoilt for choice :-)

if you are doing 1/72, airfix did a limited release with the decals in the box. but its probably hard to get now.

Thanks Talentless, I have a couple Airfix 1/72 Hawks, I'll ]check them before I invest.

Cheers

I got lotsa glue. Which one do you want? Tamiya Cement, Tamiya Extra Thin Cement, thin CA, gel CA, Mr Cement S, white glue or canopy glue?

I also got some razor saws to cut that jug apart to make room for the 2nd cockpit. The only problem is: I have no kit to build Wink I think I'll go with one of the Tamiya Razorbacks, but I'm not too sure about that...

All that glue might put you on a "trip"!

I am interested to see the plane you want to build, I have never heard of it till you mentioned it and it is surely not run of the mill.

I hear you mate.

I always said "no I won't use bling in my models it is way to expensive....."

Then the first time I got a "real" Martin Baker 4" bang seat as a gift and saw the difference it made I was hooked!

I do try to keep it to a minimum where I can, my building skills do not justify spanding to much on AM "bling"  LOL!

6 days and counting guys.

There's no 'bling' out there for the Airfix Chipmunk, but I Iooked hard :)

All you can get are some printed instrument panels, which I will use. 3 days and counting....

Yea that Chippy is a very basic kit, but still so cool! Would be nice if someone made a good 1/48 kit of one.

Tony, what scheme you gonna put on?

I think I will also add a chippy to my building list, along with the T-6.

Here is the plane I did my initial training on.Chip Mk-10 "ZS-OIS"

To be honest Theuns, I keep changing my mind. It will be one of the five schemes that Airfix have offered. I was leaning towards another Canadian one, but the decals are really old and unless I can get some decent RCAF roundels, it maybe this one. Asm me next week and you'll probably get a different answer though. At some point, I want to have modelled all of the five Airfix schemes, plus the one Modeldecal scheme that I have. It's a pretty quick build, so should be quite feasible.

I am also after that particular release as the roundals for the black Chippy Airfix has will not work on the red/white RAF one. I am still looking in the shops for that one.

In the meantime I will commit to a T-6 in 1/48 scale (italeri)

Will be in SAAF dayglow scheme.

I also have an unbuilt 1/50 heller Stampe that will be an "in betweener"

Two days to go!

Since there is only 7 hours left of 2013 I will post pix of my intended build.

Old Heller 1/50 Stampe, very basic detail but an interesting subject I think.

The full size sunburst decals will be "fun" to put on!

It will ba out the box, no extras, just fun :-)

Now lets see your projects.

Same to you Theuns, that should be an interesting one, I reckon.

Here's a photo of my Chipmunk, still in the bag. I've got all the parts off the sprue as we speak, and sprayed the interior black. I bought this particular release of the kit, as it had a different RCAF scheme to later releases, but they're very yellowed and old looking. If I can get some nice fresh roundels, then I might be able to get away with the lettering over a yellow fuselage.

Cheers

Are all the decals yellow of just the Canadian ones?

Good to know I was after this kit myself....

well the stuff has arrived , well most of it. I am still waiting for the CMK exterior set to arrive. the metal pitot is kicking around somewhere too. there will not be much of the base kit left I fear. the decal sheet confirms that the plane was actually from a training squadron and not a repainted red arrow or operational plane so go me :-)

Tape the decals in the window, the sunlight can help with the yellowing I've been told many times.

I have started on the cockpit, and find that while fit is generally good, you have to be careful with alignment because a lot of things have few molded edges, your eyeballs are your friend, or not.  There is one area, as pointed out by Michael Benolkin on ARC, that needs adjustment.  The front instrument panel as molded forces the glare shield up too high, interfering with the fit of the windscreen.  I removed some material from the lower pedestal, a nub from the left side of the instrument panel, and thinned down the glare shield where it fits the top of the panel.  I also tapered the back of the panel at the top, and shaped the glare shield around he front edges where it meets the fuselage.  I think everything is happy now.  Nothing is glued on these pictures except the seat rails in the tub.

There is a lot of detail that is nice, rivets and such are quite good, for my taste the panel lines are a little broad but it seems like only Hasegawa and sometimes Tamiya and Revell/Monogram (on their newer kits) can get that the way I like it.

Hey John, that is one stunning looking plane kit you got there. I just love the detail on it and from what I see in the pix there will be an exelent fit allrond . What colors you going for? Personlaaly I like the white one on your plans  :-)

TL, I see you are also going "allout" with your Hawk LOL.

I am busy with the 1/48 Airfix Hawk 120, it is not a bad fit, just a few "niggly" things here and there like the vortex generators are 1/2 the amount as on real plane. Just being pedantic I recon ;-)

After seeing you guys with your "all out" stunning builds I am hesetant to even start on my out the box builds.

Keep the pix coming guys :-)

Theuns, the only thing I'm adding is some Eduard seat belts and maybe some other decals so I can do a scheme with high vis red-orange like the T-38's had in the beginning.  All the stuff in the photos comes in the kit.

TL, what's life with no drama?  Come on, find a problem and fuss over it, that's the fun, right?

Been scooting right along on this.  The panel decals responded very well to Microsol, and snuggled down over the raised detail.   Eduard seat belts were added.  Before I knew it the fuselage was joined together.  I was expecting fit problems with the belly pan that is under the cockpit but it was not hard to get together and Tamiya thin cement sealed the seams up fine.  A little bit of Milliput was used under the wing as the lower wing fits into the upper like an insert and after getting a very nice wing to fuselage fit on the upper wings there were gaps at the outer ends of the lower wing.  I pressed Milliput in and also at a few spots around the leading edge of the wing around the inlets, scraped off the excess with a #11 blade and wiped of the remainder unwanted filler with a wet finger and paper towel.  I used a little super glue on the top and nose fuselage seams to get rid of the last of the seam line.

Building this is NOT like building the Wing Nut Wings DH-9a I just finished.  What a kit that was, but so much detail!  I'm sure I spent more time doing the rigging on that than I will spend doing this entire model.  But I will love them both dearly.

the pit almost fell in, but the  amount of plastic that had to be removed to fit these wheel wells was ridiculous, and they dont really look any better, i wouldnt bother with them. im not even using the front wheel well as there isnt really room for it and any nose weight ill need. waste of time really. flaps have been cut out also.

We can't always have "shake 'n bake" kits that just fall together without trouble.......just imagine how boring it would get LOL.
