40.MM, that weathering looks pretty spot on to what I've seen in photos. Great work, it came out awesome.

Hey 40.mm, just posted you to the front page.

PB doesn't like my browser at home (Pale Moon or Firefox) for some reason but works on the office computer (Chrome). Dunno why, but I'm not changing my browser for one website.

Japanese Group Build V

RULES

*Start Date January 1st, 2016

*End Date December 31st, 2016

*Japanese subjects which I'll define as operating under the Japanese flag, aka a captured P-40 flown by a Japanese pilot would be kosher

*Cross-overs are welcome

*Pre-started are fine as long as they're under 10-20% finished (light assembly)

*Any 'roll-over' subjects from Part IV are welcome

*No cut-off date for entry, you can enter on Dec 30 if you can build the model in a day

And most important have fun guys and gals!

Whew!... finally started work on my JGB V subject...a P40 cross-dressed as a Japanese airplane... As you can see, it's looking like a clean build so far...

Well, I'm calling this Sweet little kit done. (Although I may try and get an antenna wire on at a later date.) .  This is the Sweet 1/144 Claude kit and it has been an enjoyable little build. The only fit issue was on the underside with the wing center section to aft fuselage. It wasn't a huge issue just a bit of sanding stick was required. :)

Mr. Color C377 (aluminum silver) from the JASDF paint set was used for the NMF and Tamiya paints for the black & red.  Decals need a bit more help and I will beat them into submission a bit better on the second kit in the box. Solvent didn't do the trick so the other ace up my sleeve is hotter water. Its worked well on other projects. :)  A mechanical pencil was used for the lines on the NMF and a humbrol / oil paint wash for the red areas.

The only obsticle I bumped lightly into was one of the exhaust stubs went ping... Its probably on my building table somewhere and if I can find it, I'll put it back on. The cockpit glazing was handpainted as were the safety stripes on the prop.

Anyways, without further do do... Here she is. Photos are from my Iphone 6.   Now, onto the partially finished Oscar, its time to get her out of the box and get her moving again.

I will be jumping in here soon with my Jake. My building time has been drastically reduced but I will squeeze in some bench time.

Awesome hair spray weathering.

Great looking Claude. That is a tiny model indeed!

Sounds good PJ!

Frankly I have to confess to not getting much done here on my big Zero. The cockpit is partly done and I've been waiting to get more finished before posting photos. And I'm trying to get everything that needs to be sprayed aotake done at one time. I prime the parts in gloss black, spray them Alclad aluminum, and then a coat of Tamiya translucent blue with a little green. Lot of steps so I'd like to get them all done in one or two sessions rather than a dozen or so.

I think someone makes the aotake, either Tamiya or MM. I think I have a bottle and will check when I get home and let u know.

Thanks PJ, I have a bottle of it, I think mine is by White Ensign but I like the look of the Tamiya translucent paint over the aluminum better. I love the results and I don't think it's that much work if I can do it all in a session or two. It gets annoying when you find out you missed something here or there and have to remix a bunch of paint to spray something tiny like a landing gear door.

Ok no sweat then. I use silver and when dry apply Tamiya clear green on ip radar screens For jets like the Tomcat. The  silver makes the clear green look like a real radar screen.

Hey 40mm, Is that the effect of the "Hairspray Technique?" It looks outstanding! Now I have a couple questions. 1) What exactly IS the "Hairspray Technique" ?? 2) How is it employed? Before or After paint? 3) What type of paint do you use? Acrylic, enamels, and does it work better with either? Would love to try this on a future build, so any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated!! Regards Freddie from LI

Hey 40.mm if I may 'chip' in (sorry about the pun) Freddie, what you're doing here is.

1). Paint model your undercoat colour, aluminum here or maybe primer red on a tank or truck.

2). Spray the model with hairspray. I use two coats, you can go with one or more depending on what works for you.

3). Airbrush model with the upper coat, aka green over grey here.

4). When the upper coat has dried, lightly scrub the model with a moist (not wet!) large stiff brush. In the high spots where the brush catches it will cause the hairspray to come up along with the paint on top of it showing the undercoat. Sorta drybrushing in reverse.

5). Coat the model in several good coats of the clear coat of your choice. A coat of gloss for decaling and then a coat of matte for the finish should be enough. If you don't and wash the model later on ALL the paint will come off... Indifferent

I have no idea how 40.mm did his, I'll leave it to him to fill in the details. I use acrylic paint and I've heard it works better than with enamel but I never tried enamels here so I'm not sure.

Gamera, thank you for your input to my questions on the "Hairspray method".

The one question I do have, concerns when you do the final washing of the model.  Would that be before the clear coats are applied, or after?

Thanks again for your help and I am going to give this a try when I build the Ki-100 'Tony', which will get going as soon as I finish the Ki-45.

Regards Folks!!

Hi Guys, I have just started the Hasegawa 1/32 Ki 61 "Tony"and all that has been done is I glued in the the cockpit side panels and painted the interior colour and started painting the pilot, would this be eligible?

Hey Freddie, sorry I think I skipped a few steps there Dunce

5). Coat the model with at least one good coat of gloss to protect the paint and hairspray from the decal setting solution, then decal as normal. Wash the excess decal setting solution off the model, so far I haven't had any issues with the water and detergent getting under the gloss.

5.1) Coat the model with a second clear coat and then do your panel line wash.

5.2). Coat model with your final matte finish coat.

You should be able to do your panel line washes at any point there, I'd just make sure to have a clear coat over it if you've done the hairspray and have the paint where you want it. It probably won't lift with a pin wash but I'd expect a sludge wash would take most of the paint up.

JJ: Sure, looks under 10% done to me. Welcome aboard!

G, i'm having a slight issue with my camera that should be fixed tomorrow I hope, but I wanted to say that my Chi-Nu is almost completely built and primed. I applied my spray primer and I coated the tank with some "Heavy Chipping" just in case I want to take some paint off later. Instead of the same camo pattern i've done for your other builds, I think it'll be a straight Olive Drab base and some weathering. The kit came with 4 figures but i'm not sure how many or if i'll add any.

I had planned a medium sized diorama to go with this build but the hut that I built is a little too big for what I have in mind. I'll show pics when my camera is up and running. If I can pull it off i'm going to tie in about three builds into one diorama using the hut and Chi-Nu and a few other things that will be completely off the wall.

I'll get something up tomorrow
