Justin, that Lancaster is a beast and looking very nice.

Toshi, very impressive work so far. I'm diggin' it.

Bossman, ya I know that method, but the black plastic is very odd to work with. It's difficult to explain. The seem issue isn't that I can't find them to repair, it's that I can't see them during glueing to avoid the issue of needing to use the silver to repair the seems. When I can see the seems I can close them and not need any filler. On this black plastic you can't see them and therefore end up with areas that need more work that could have been avoided if the kit was grey. I hope that makes sence.

Now I have the vast majority of work done on this kit. It is a nice kit, aside from being black, and it goes together very well and very quickly.

I did the black basing method on this one and even though I used one very thin coat of dark charcoal it nearly wiped out the basing. The naked eye can see the subtle tonal variations on the surface but the camera definatly does not. The kit appears black but I've actually taked MM gloss black and cut it by about 20% with MM gull grey and faded the black down a notch. The gloss coat for the decals made that darker but I know when I flat coat this it will lighten up the color once again and I will further that with pastels to give it a bit of dusty grey fade  over the black.

The neat thing about the decals on the kit is even though the red really pops in the light, as soon as the light dims just a bit they disappear into the black and can't hardly be seen at all. Very neat affect, especially on a night fighter.

Thanks for looking.

Looking good BK. One of the guys at the model club did an NF Ju 88 and did it in a very dark grey, very similar approach to yours. Neta idea and it really worked with the weathering.

Bish

Like the look of that light Toshi.

Justin, i am keen to see those prop blurs as well.

Thank you Bish.  I used Model Master Enamel Chrome Silver 1790.  I was going to get rid of most of my enamel paint due to it's smell.  I don't want to upset Mrs. Toshi.  But I'm glad I kept the Chrome Silver.  It did a good job for what it is.

WOW!  No glue required to assemble wing root to bottom half of the wing.  You tap in four machine screws and that's it!

Top and bottom wings glued together.  Nacelles are dry fitted.  Dry fit is nice and straight, no problems at all.

I do like the screw in wing concept.  No warping due to this as I would assume the size would warp the wing.  With the screws, everything is tight of which is a good thing.  I didn't use any pins, rubber bands, nor clamps.  This photo was taken five minutes after glueing.

So it's getting to the point of the build that there isn't really anything to show in an update, so while waiting for cement to cure, I decided to get started on the dam and reservoir. ...

Finally decided on and procured this as my GB entry. Doug's 1:72 version of the 'cardoor' inspired this change of mind on my part.

It is apparently a Eduard rebox of Hasegawa sprues, with a bit of PE and resin from Eduard, and the Eduard instructions which I almost always enjoy. I have a Morrison-approved 18" x 18" working space cleared off on my bench, so I should be set to go. Geeked

Bish, I know I had previously submitted my Beaufighter. Sorry, I'll get to that one perhaps next.

I hope to catch up on a couple pages of progress from the gang here later on......

.....and glad you're back with us, Bish

Wow, several pages of catching up.

Brandon, you careful seam work seems to be paying off. Wow! You made alot of progress in a few days/pages!!! Looking sharp with those decals on.

CMK, thanks for letting me know Humbrol does acrylic.  I think it's Sprue Bros I found stocks it, but only about 1/3 of the whole line. Everybody seems to like Humbrol, I'm not fond of chasing hard to get hobby staples, but might just try some some day.

MC, the green finishes off the top camo nicely. Looks good. (nice catch by Jack, there, eh?)

Castel, yep, it looks like an airplane now. Nice progress.

Johnny, that Harrier is going to be fun to watch. Really looking forward to it. I want to build a Harrier and also try my first Airfix kit so you truly have my attention.

Scott, good to see you're under way, challenges and all. And thanks for the additional info on the Dremel drill press stand. After more decades of not getting one, I might just break down sometime soon.

Crown, welcome to the GB and I see you're making progress already.

Justin, that is one interesting aircraft. Looking forward to watching it come together.

Chris, you're comment on those water-skimming Texans ("it might be like just driving down the road . . .  but......") is exactly what I was thinking. Exactly.

And Toshi.... That shot of the nacelles still on the sprues a few pages back, I couldn't figure out what the heck those halves were. Surprise Fun to watch them come together. You've made a bunch of progress to and everything is looking great.

Isn't that Model Master silver chrome enamel just the cat's meow? Some years ago either Stik or Mustang Joe recommending it for chrome oleo struts, went out and bought a square bottle of regular testors back then. It's funny you mentioned this stuff cuz just a week or so ago I needed it to do the stuts on my P51. No joy finding it so it was off to Hobby Lobby. No more square bottles, but they had the Model Master version  Needless to say, later that evening my other bottle turned up.

Thank you sir!  Yes Greg, I couldn't agree with you more!  I see weird pieces and halves of pieces of parts on the sprues and can't figure out what the hell these things are for nor imagine how it will be assembled.  Even after I go over the assembly book, (And yes, these are not pages, these pages make a assembly book and I'm not even halfway through the assembly book) it still doesn't fully register in my mind.

Looking at the upcoming pages only makes my head spin!  LOL!  It's once I get to the page does everything come together.  Then they start to make sense.  With this complex kit, I just try to take it easy and take things one step at a time.

As for the Model Master Chrome Silver, I can't tell you enough on how great this product is.  As a rookie kit builder, I just picked it up as I was building a old school kit, the Monogram Visible B-17G.  I purchased the Chrome Silver specifically for the Visible B-17G build.  After that, the B-17G build was chosen for the Digital Gallery.  That also sold me on the Chrome Silver.  I was ecstatic.

Thank you for your kind words on my Mosquito build.  It's greatly appreciated.  I look forward on your contribution to this GB!  I'll be following very closely.

Thanks Eagle90!  The engineering on Tamiya's part is amazing.  Some of the items make a lot of sense, like the screws to assemble the wings to the root wing.  That makes it extremly sturdy.

I really enjoy each step as it's a kit in itself.  Thank you for the support you're giving me, I really appreciate it.

I am really enjoying seeing all the progress everyone has been doing in this GB. Congrats Greg on getting a kit submitted and I hope to see you getting started on it soon.

I didn't get much done this weekend.  I got the engine all set and aligned and have now started finally assembly on it.  I plan the next few build sessions will be detailing the engine and cockpit.

Saturday, I had my attention on breaking in an old engine I rebuilt this last winter on this 1/4 scale cub.

Scott,

Those 4 cycle engine do sound sweet!! Did you get to fly the cub or just run the engine? They fly soooo nice. I really miss a NICE place to fly. Not so much around here. The 2 places we have are either too far or too expensive.

Hello All,

Crown - Nice Meteor - man ! That was quick.  Nicely weathered engine from what I can see.

Brandon - Oh - now I get it.   Well - it looks like you took care of those seams nicely.

Toshi - Those nacelles looked heavy compared to those spindly legs.   Now with the wing assembly . . .   Whoa !   ( I know they get some reinforcing support later )

Justin - It should be fun watching this dio come together.  Just wondering if you'll make your dog nervous though:  After seeing the reservoir on top of his crate being bombed - he'll probably be guarding his water dish quite closely !

Greg - Super !  Another Typhoon !

Scott - goin in the right direction - looking good.

Everybodys stuff looks really great. I apologize for not getting my pix up of my slow progress on the Tempest, as we all know life meanders to and fro, I think I missed the last exit it took so I'm trying to reign it back in. There will be pix before its done. Great work guys.

Hey Steve and Bish.  I started this engine for the first time in over 20 years and am now tuning it for low end idle.  I am still a ways a way from flying this old plane. I love the .120 4 cycle on a Cub for its sound, smell, reliability, and power.  I got this Cub last Fall from an estate.  Its about 35 years old and sat in storage for at least 20 years.  I went through the engine, replaced the fuel system with a new tank, hoses, filter, fuel pump, and finishing up radio upgrades. I may look at repainting it next winter. Geese, its like am am talking about a full scale.  At this size, 101" wingspan, it is like having a full scale without all the huge amounts of money needed, it even smells like a 1:1 Piper Cub.

The Cub, and my SE5 are both experience builders for a project I want to start in a few years, and that is building a 1/4 scale SE5.
