Are we there yet ???

Here's a portion of the RHA painting commemorating 2LT George Ward Gunn, VC, that's the inspiration for my 2pdr portee.

Don't expect a diorama of this quality, although I'll give it a try.

I've been collecting 2-pdr & portee pictures & references. The 2-pdr is of course from Sovereign & since I did one already, not much of a mystery & I know the things to tweak for detail. I'm still not sure of the exact mount, etc, on the portee & will wait till I get some of the 2pdr built so I can fiddle with the legs, etc. As with my first (& still not finished) 2-pdr, hacking a decent crew will be the hardest part of this ....

I have refined the portee concept quite a bit. I'll use both the Tamiya & Italeri Gun Trucks (Artillery Tractors) -- TA is a CMP Ford with 12-cab and Italeri's a CMP Chev with 13-cab. Looks like the bulk of the parts will come from the Italeri kit, but the cab will come from the TA kit. With a bunch of styrene in between all to make the frame longer, etc ...

I was going to use the Italeri 15-cwt Supply Truck as a basis, but the gun tractors are better. I also had a QL & 6-pdr for parts but no longer think I'll need them. If I have time, maybe I'll knock out the QL/6pdr en portee. And I should have enough parts left from the two Arty Tctrs to make one, so maybe I'll get a 25-pdr ....

OK, guys, need some help here ....

When carried on purpose-built portee's, the 2-pounders had small caster wheels welded onto the shorter two legs so they could be winched/wheeled onto the portee, the main wheels of the 2-pdr being taken off already.

I know this, and have one general reference, but sure could use a picture or two specifically of the caster wheel setup to ensure I get it right. Can anyone help ??

Thanks in advance,
John

PS: Further study indicates the TA Quad & Italeri CMP-15 will be basis of the portee vehicle. Don't worry, it'll probably chnage again as I play with parts (I promise I have no glue nearby !!!) ...

There is always a lot of interest in the badges that have seemed to be a 'must' with these group builds. These are a few that I have done for this build. Your thoughts, ideas or other alternatives are welcome.

I think #1 is best, but isn't "British" redundant with "Commonwealth" and thus we could shorten up the name to maybe:
Commonwealth
Group Build '04

I like the first one but I must admit the second one is more representive of British Commonwealth with the flags.

Wayne I enjoy getting older, especially when I consider the alternative.

Looks like number 1 is the most popular. Just to throw a little fuel on the fire...... i have redone it with the c'wealth flags. Do you prefer the first or the redone one?

First one:

redone one:

John. Us Colonials are actually really called the 'British Commonwealth' but if I write Commonwealth in full, it is too small to read, hence C'wealth!Big Smile [:D] Besdies, it looks better balanced the way it does. Thanks for the feedback anyway.

My vote goes to the first GB badge. I really like the male/female tanks, and it would be just to pay hommage to the Brits by including the tanks in the GB badge.

I agree. The tank picture is more dynamic than the two side views, although I also like the third because I'm building an armoured car. Big Smile [:D]

I think moving the tank to the top of the picture hurts the dynamism though; it draws the viewer's eyes up off the badge entirely. It looked better in the center. Since we're looking at the tank from below, it might look good on the bottom too.

Also, while the flags are a nice touch, they're redundant with the word 'Commonwealth,' and that 'C'wealth' looks really jarring in all three images. What about dispensing with the flags entirely (including the Union Jack), and using the extra space for a third line of text? For instance;

04 British &
Commonwealth
(tank picture)
Group Build

...or,

04 British &
Commonwealth
Group Build
(tank picture)

(only center the text. I tried to do it with spaces, but it didn't take. Tongue [:P])

And if you really want to keep the Union Jack, you could put it behind the lettering, though the lettering would need a good contrasting colour to be visible.

I like #1 but the Mk4 tank is WW1 how about something from the period

Here are a few pics I found with a little googling that might work

I kind of like the idea of all the flags but agree it looks better with the tank in the center

The Mk IV is from the period. The GB is open to anything from WWI to the present day.

It's just most of us doing WWII stuff. Big Smile [:D]

My mistake, somehow I thought it was just WW2, I see it includes much more. In that case I like #1 but with the flags across the top.

BTW if we do a diarama is it ok if there are things in it that don't meet the build guide lines, I have an LRDG truck and SAS jeep I've been thinking about doing together. The truck is Canadian but the Jeep is US, would this be an issue with anybody. Sticking with the Bishop but if time permits I've had the other two sitting around awhile and thought this may provide an excuse to do them. If not I'll save them for a North Africa build another time.

Aaron. Thanks for the comments. As has been said already, this GB is open to all AFV's WW1 to present day. I tried several pics originally, but when you reduce them to 62 or 64 pixels wide, you just don't recognize the vehicle in the pic. I used the Mark IV because its shape identifies it straight away.

Just because I suggested this GB does not mean that you have to agree on a badge I have designed guys. I'm sure there are some real budding artists out there that can do better. We will leave this open for a while.

2 weeks this Friday to jump off.

What if you did a Union jack background with British Commonwealth Gb written inside the center horizontal line and make the badge the size of the Huey or Young Guns GB badge. just a thought...

Peter:

Well, since I've already displayed my Yank ignorance over Britsh & Commonwealth Big Smile [:D] , I'll just continue the string by voting for your new #2 .... unless the 17th will get here faster if I don't ....
