Aurora-7, I hope you're not having as many difficulties with the Mavis as I'm having with the Emily--what a beast! I've sanded down all the rivets and scratchbuild a good part of the interior, but at every step there is more sanding and more filling and more sanding! I'm almost ready to start the exterior painting.

rmulhe,

I was planning on doing scratch work in the cockpit but decided agains it since I do want to finish the kit Wink [;)] It's bad enough I busted up one control wheel! With the canopy in place and for a 1/72 scale kit I didn't think the effort would show. And for me it doesn't make me feel better 'knowing its there'.

I'm doing some light sanding to reduce the rivet effect but I'm no rescribing. That would take too long for me. I still have'nt mated the wings yet and I've just started putting the engines together for painting. I'm trying to decide whether to use wires or stretched sprue for the float and wing rigging. I'm leading towards sprue.

Hello GB'ers....

I finally have some progress pics to show. I am building a Canadair CL215 air tanker and currently have everything primed, cockpit masked and primed and some sub-assemblies completed which are shown below. This kit will be built OOTB:

Fuselage Halves #1

Fuselage Halves #2

Fuselage Halves #3

Cockpit #1

Cockpit #2

Wings & Vertical Stabilizer

Wingtip Floats and Engine Nacelles

I am not building very quickly since life just dealt me some hardship that no parent should face - the loss of my only child to a hit and run driver. His passing was one month on the 28th of April. Nonetheless, I am trying to return to some sort of "new" normal life and have tried to make time to get back to modelling since it helps me with my loss by focussing my thoughts here for a few minutes.

I am getting ready to next mate the fuselage halves, clean up the seams and maybe mount the wings. My next pictures, I hope will look something like a plane instead of pieces. I will also include a ruler to show you guys the size of this 1/72 scale subject.

Until next time.....

Well I'm still working on mine, with the relocation to Iowa coming up. I have not much time for any gluing at all, hope to get more done this week.

Cheers

Gettochild, your work on the pit looks great. As for my build, not much has changed since I last posted pics, except to clean up a few seams.

I'm awfully sorry I have not posted here in a long time but I've been in the middle of a project at work and I've done no modeling at all since mid April. The project is due to be finished this Friday so I'll be at it again soon.

Ghetto, the seats look great!

How are we all doing? I'm back from the Shizuoka Hobby Show, finished with the MBT-70, and ready to finish the ol' HK-1!
Now, where did I put that thing...

Time to return!

Well now back to some me time. Here's what I had done of the Mavis fuselage before I had stopped. I had decided not to go into detail with the cockpit since a test fit of the canopy in place showed that not much interior would be visible. I had broken one control wheel and spent a couple of frustrating hours trying to fix it with tweezers through a magnifying glass. Forget it. I'll reposition the crew figures to look a little more natural in their seats. Maybe a map on the map table.

I had used a RAF color for the interiror green. Looked pretty close to some color cockpit images I had seen of an Emily so I decided to go with it

I have always found the rudder on the W29 interesting -- one would think they would want it out of the spray, etc, area. I don't know if they did it this way for field of fire or something else.

sorry i missed this one...
u got it rite, the rudder on the w29 was positioned that way so the gunner
wouldn't shoot it (like indy's dad did in 'the last crusade', LOL !)

I haven't checked this thread in a while so I wasn't sure if the GB was still active or not.....glad to see it stills operating. I will get some pictures of my CL215 up tonight....right now the main fuselage/wing/vertical stabilizer is completed, puttied (aaaaarrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh) and painted. Currently painting the anti-glare nose covering and hopefully be able to move on to the decals this weekend.

BTW, bstrump.....the Twin Otter looks fabulous.....are these kits hard to get? I flew in one of those lovelies many years ago, albeit without floats but she did have tundra tires (half-inflated DC-3 tires) that allows landing on unprepped surfaces. Great aircraft, we landed on a large gravel sand-bar in a braided river system in Northern Labrador and I have to say it was a smoother landing than if it was on tarmac. It might be an aircraft I'd like to build if they can be easily obtained.

Keep watching for my pics of the big orange tanker.....coming soon.

Cheers for now!

Hello, I'm new on this forum, but I hope Im on the right place. I'm looking for plans for one of the early plane of the Navy, the Burgess-Dunne AH-7. I found some 3 View, but without measure. I want to scratchbuilt this flyingwings in the 1:48 and I need some precise documentation.
Can someone, somewhere help me?

Thanks.

Finally some real progress to show. It seems that over the last two months I'm averaging about 30 minutes per weak with my big orange tanker 282. It is not my best work but I can also blame some of that on the quality of the plastics Heller uses....I find them too slight and so they easily warp. Because they easily warp, they leave seams. Because they leave seams I have to putty.......I hate too putty......
Less I digress.....enjoy the pics and maybe soon I might be able to get some decs and the remaining some assembly finished and futured.....

Until next time,

RODC

rodc, I forgot to answer your question about the Twin Otter kit. It's a Mtachbox kit that has been re-released by Modelcraft Canada and should be easily obtainable. It's not cheap though, at around $20.

Lot's of seem filling going on. Especially for the wing supports. Sink hole in the supports themselves and a big seem when mated to the fuselage. Nothing really new to show for pictures, yet.

I'll treat the fuselage and wing as independent builds and mount them together at the last possible step (I'll paint them seperately). I've been mulling on how to do the rigging. Streched sprue or wire. maybe drill a hole into the float and wing and just flex the sprue/wire enough to fit into them and seal it with glue.

I have not been following the activities of the float group for a while but it sems like everyone is getting along well with their projects. I think it would be appropriate to provide the group with an update on the Combat Mars effort. I have just finished my 4th primer coat of the completely assembled A/C. This process has involved filling
, sanding, painting, and repeat. The general surface of the plastic provided in the kit is rough and a considerable amount of effort has been required to achieve a reasonable surface before appling the Gloss Blue final finish. The major assembly problem has been the blending of the wing top surfaces into the fuselage top. The fuselage as molded in this area has a distinct dip so that the wing airfoil shape does not continue as asmooth surface across the fuselage top. I have applied a great deal of filler tobuild up the fuselage surface to provide a smooth surface that carries the wing top airfoilacross the fuselage.

I am currently scratch building the set of four propellors and have already constructed the three point beaching gear so I need only clean up and rescribe the primed model and apply the final finish. Hopefully with one coat.

Hi everyone. I have applied a few primer coats to the Twin Otter but I see that I have to give a few of the joints another pass with the putty. So it'll be a little while longer before I can start applying the gloss white

I have to post images of what I've done so far. I've got the wing sub assemblies together but joining outboard assemblies to the inboard is going to be ugly! I got my monies worth from the flexifiles I bought a couple of years ago. Using them was the only way I could clean up the heavy mold seams on the wing supports.

Almost all my prop blades have broken off from the propellar hubs. I have 1 out of for props that is intact. The others have either 1 or no blades attached.

A minor update. I finally have all the seams filled and sanded to satisfaction and can now start applying the gloss white. Not too long now and I can start putiing on decals.

I read back in the pages that the finish date for this GB had been extended. Until when? I can't seem to find the new finish date anywhere.
