We're planning a round Oz trip in the near future. Has anyone any experience in modelling on the run? I'm switching from vehicles to figures while we're travelling but I'd be interested if anyone else has had experience modelling while travelling (or at least when you stop for a couple of days).

Cheers

Ahhh! I've been thinking about one of those myself. You know how it is when you made a particular model as a kid, always seem to retain a soft spot for it.

Testors do have a limited edition out in 1/48 although I don't know anyone bringing them into Oz. There's also a 1/72 by Eastern Express, whoever they are (Russian company) which Frontline have listed.

"From my previous nomadic life stlye I can IMHO say that the shops here in Adeliade are on a par with those in other states in regards to some of their ranges pricing and service."

Tks for the info on the stores Wayne. Military Hobbies is my "favourite". They're very friendly and helpful and I can usually find something of interest on the shelf. I've been to SA Hobbies but that's it. Opening hours are the best as well.

I wonder if the folks at FSM would think about an Aussie forum. It would make life here a little easier.

Cheers

Shane, been there done that during my time with the RAAF, fiqures are a good subject for this type of life as they do not occupy much space but do require protection whilst on the move to prevent damage.

Some of the things I learnt was;
ensure that you have well equiped tool box with you
ensure that you have the required paints as you might find that the ones you want will not be available where you stop.
Have a storage box for all your gear so you can keep it all together while moving.

I have found that bean bag beans are a good storage medium for aircraft and cotton wool is good for figures. My models have survived travel all over australia in this way with only a little breakage.

Now a question: I've been given a 1/72 Hasegawa F/A-18A Hornet for my 18th. Can anyone give me any 'heads-ups' on any little problems regarding fit, gaps, etc. Also, I'm going to build it as a 3 Sqn. Hornet from the early 1980s with the Cobra's Head decals. Does anyone know which paints are the closest to matching the actual colours of the Hornet?
Cheers,
John

Just to open another line of discussion, "How many of our Aussie Modellers belong to a modelling Club?" This is really to satisfy a curiosity I have.

To start this discussion rolling. I am a member of the South Australian Plastic Modellers Association. In the past was also a member of the ACT Scale Modellers.

I'm not a member of a modelling club.

Currently there is no model club in the Albury/Wodonga area though I am trying to start one with the Air Force Cadet unit I am with. There is also talk of trying to start a club in Albury, but it has been a while since i've heard anything from that.

I'm not a member of any club at the moment. There's none in my area. I'd like to join a club one day, but not just yet. I'll have to do some investigating and see where the closest one is.

johnforster,

That's interesting. I'm new to Melbourne and interested in a model railway(railroad) club. Where and when does the AMRA club meet?
Do you have a website?

Thanks

Celestialsphere.

Tanx for the insight. I'll be caravanning for quite a bit of the time so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. We're off-roading for about 3-4 months so I think I'll take up reading during that part of the trip given the damage potential.

The beans sound like a good idea. Holds the model firmly without leaving traces of whatever around. I've been thinking of packing material and this sound like the go. Now, where's my wife and her sowing machine.

Apparently they had to confirm from Western Power that there was power problems in the first place , not too sure if they claim the money from western power or the insurance company pay for it them selfs.

The first time I looked at the PE it looked a bit frighting what have I got myself into I'll be picking your brains on this one guys if you don't mind..

Has anyone tryed the etch-mate is it any good and is it worth buying..

cheers mike

That's AMRA's website. Go to the the Branches menu and select Victoria. There's a programme in there for Feb/March.
