Names Shane currently living in Adelaide. My main interest is 1:35 Military ground based vehicles and I'm in my modern period at the moment but anything will do. I have dabbled in sci-fi and built some planes but the planes were about 30 years ago oh and one motor bike (that was 20 years ago). I did a truck once. Built it that is Blush [:I].

Darren, you answered a question before I had a chance to ask it: as I am going to be in Melbourne this weekend I was going to ask about the shops you mentioned to confirm that they where still open.

Hehehe I think i usurped your title Celestialsphere!!! Tongue [:P]
Here's a list of the larger ones:

Hearn's Hobbies: 295 Flinders Street (under the Flinders Street Station, oppostie Elizabeth Street)
Victorian Hobby Centre: 1st Floor, 21A Swanston Street, also near the station.
Metropolitan Model & Hobby Centre: 424 Station Street, Box Hill
Hobby Place, City: 280-282 Lonsdale Street (opposite Myer)

I suggest VHC, they're a lot cheaper than Hearn's when it comes to their products. I have been buying from them for a few years now and must say I'm quite happy with the results. Also, they have a great stock of conversion kits & decals to build Aussie models.
Cheers,
John (the REAL newest Melbournian)

BTW I'm John, i live in Melbourne's western 'burbs. I'm into Warhammer 40K, 1/35 Aussie Army vehicles (incl APCs, Tanks & Helos), 1/35 WWII German amour, 1/72 modern day fighters (esp Aussie and Russian). I also do a bit of HO gauge railroad modelling and some 1/350 ships.

Thanks for the Hobby shop info guys!

I visited the February meeting of the Eastern Suburbs Scale Modelling Club last night.
They were very welcoming and there was a good selection of models on display.
Thanks for a great night if any of the guys are on the thread.

John Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to FSM and welcome to the Aussie Modelers thread. I totally agree with you on Vic Hobby Centre, they have the best prices by far and if you're a model club member you get a further 10% discount.
I use Hearns mainly to by paint and bits as I pretty much only use MM Enamels and they have a good range of those.
Hobby Place is OK and has an excellent range of Tamegawa kits, but I don't find the service to be all that great.

Cheers

Folks - I've set myself up on Fotki and am in the process of migrating my aircraft pics across there over the next week. This setup gives me unlimitied disk space [:0] so I don't have to scale down the pics. To date I've done the AWM & the Aus. Aviation Museum at Bankstown.

Heh heh, 55MB on the Mirage alone.

Shane I live at Paralowie but visit the Largs area, foreshore that is, on a regular basis. The hobby shops I usually use are:

Hobby Habit at Blair Athol - I find they carry a resonable range of kits and their prices are ok.

Miltitary Hobbies in Hindmarsh - Their range may not large but I found them very helpful, it also where I get my Vallejo Paints from these are very hard to find.

SA Hobby Centre in Adelaide - Carries a good range, service sometimes a little slack, prices can be a bit high but by using this discount card system you can save if you by from them frequently.

Haven't visited Model World since they have moved to Richmond but intend to very soon.

From my previous nomadic life stlye I can IMHO say that the shops here in Adeliade are on a par with those in other states in regards to some of their ranges pricing and service.

mgbriggs,

I'm settling into Melbourne just fine. I was a bit worried that my car would float away this morning, what with all this rain we've had. The carpark is nearby Gardiners Creek in Hawthorn. Its a torrent at the moment! Over night the water had risen up 2 metres before dropping back to todays level. Mein Gott! That's a lot of water.

I've only packed a couple of models to come over to Victoria. And they're still in the container coming from Perth, so fingers crossed.

Hehehe, yes it was a lot of rain eh! I was actually a bit worried my house would float away!!! In the west, we have Kororoit Creek which actually became Kororoit/Amazon River due to the huge increase in water volume. I believe it rose at least 2 1/2 m overnight, possibly more!

John, under the Modeling Subjects Heading on the forum you will find a section titled Group Builds (GB), it's here that a bunch of people get together and build within a given timeframe to a particular theme. The Aussie Group Build is on again this year and is really worth checking out, we all had a ball last year.

Cheers

Looking forward to my new work. Approve [^]

Actually working on my Hawk. I want to get that nailed for the GB ASAP. I have most parts glued up and will start painting the cockpit so I can glue the fuselage together in a couple of days. When done I will get cracking on the BA Falcon. I need the Hawk article please. Can you scan and send to me at your earliest convenience?

I'll let you know this week when we can do the BBQ.

Can anyone tell me if a 1/48th scale kit of the Schneider Trophy winning (and World Speed Record Breaking, I think) Supermarine S.6B is (has been) available ? I'm thinking, Testors?

Now that is a plane of legend.
