Tweety1. If I can remember from a close up look of a sabre that I saw at Laverton in the early 70s the cockpit was not much different from the US model and it was painted in Green Zinc chromate colour.

ILuv3ggs, I was employed in the Ground Telecommunication area, mainly in the HF communication role and depending in what era it was my mustering (job name) was Lineman, then Antenna Rigger followed by Communications Electronic Tech. Retired a the dizzy heights of Warrant Officer. Must admit I did enjoy my time in the RAAF.

Matt, I am really enjoying my retirement I think I earnt it. I have also found Military Hobbies good especially seeing they stock Vallejo paints which I am trying with the view of using them only for fiqure modelling.

SOUTH AUSSIE does the hasagawa spitfire V111 have both tail options only asking because i have a set of decals for Gibbes aircraft (Caldwells no 2)both from the 80th sounds like a diorama, but my references contradict themselves i have colour plates showing the same spit but one with the older tail and the other with the sharper higher tail.
ANY IDEAS J.S

j.s. The hasagawa kit only has the does have both tails in the kit but references show that the only tail to be used is the sharper one, either aircraft. This kit includes decals for two aircraft, one Caldwell's Aircraft the other for tail number A58 -652 this aircraft carries the name "Grey Nurse" and has a sharks mouth design on the nose. The Squadron markings are for 457 Sqn.

Hope this helps

For those who are interested, the South Australian Plastic Modellers Association (sapma) just got a new bulletin board up and running as part of their website.

The web address is gumnut.net/sapma for the aussie modellers it could be worth a look.

in Perth (not that it would be much use to you boyz) the Western Australian Scale Model Expo is the main annual display run over a long wkend - last yr it was May or June (cant remeber as i didnt go) and the event hasnt been confirmed this year.

Another hobby & model expo in country WA is in Bindoon about 2ish hrs north of Perth (bout 1hr from my place) & usually in November. I dont know which club organises this.

Other than that, those are the only two official model display & comp shows - does anyone know of any others?

Hey folks!

Well stone the crows and starve the lizards, I resisted the temptation to say ' G'day Mates!'

Just joined the forum yesterday, I'm Andy from the beautiful Yarra Valley, 'bout an hour east of Melbourne. It's over 40 years since I built my first kit - an Airfix Spitfire - and between then and the end of Uni I think I built all the Airfix armour kits and a fair selection of the planes. After that I got side-tracked into model railways for more years than I care to remember, but of late toy trains just don't do it like they used too! So here I am, back in plastic, probably concentrating on small armour prototypes in 1/72 and 1/35, and WW2 ships in 1/700. Then I always wanted to do a series of twin engine WW2 planes. And early jets. And sailing ships. And..................................

And just for the record, this is probably the most open, warm and welcoming forum I ever joined! Not just this thread, but the whole thing! Its nice to be here! Big Smile [:D]

Cheers, Andy!

thanks for the info south aussie ill grab that hasagawa kit.

Welcome to the forum PHIL FROM VIC period sailing ships eh,i had a look at the first part of the build the victory week by week at the local newsagent but 100 parts =100 weeks a little to long for me and a bit pricey at $1195.00 after 2 years.I assume you build wooden ships they seem daunting to me all those planks and bulkheads but imagine the finished ship on the shelf. seeya around the forum mate.

Getting back to AUSSIE models Acadamy make a 1/32 scale sopwith camel.I have a lot of info on an Australian pilot during ww1 called Robert Little,July 19 1895 to May 27 1918 only 23 when he died anyway this guy shot down 47 EA.The only info i dont have is what his camel looked like only its serial no N5493.Does anyone know if the RAAF keeps archives or has anyone have a photo or colour plate of this camel.
THANKS JS.

j.s Yes the RAAF does keep archives, usually well buried, but if you contact the RAAF Museum at Pt Cook in Melbourne they may be able to help you. Can't remember their contact details at present but Ill try to find it and get back to you.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome]Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Phil and Andy, I gave up counting how many of us are members of the FSM Forum at about page 4 of this thread,[:0]never thought it would last this long when I started it[:0]. It turned out to be a good way of us aussies to keep in touch with one another and passing on local information.

P.S. Andy I have also been involved in Model Railways over the years, but like you Im finding scale modelling a bit more motivating.

ILuv3ggs, Go for it, it can be worth while just to find out how you rate amoungst other modellers. The only thing to bear in mind is, regardless of what others think including Blindfold [X-)]judgesBlindfold [X-)], the only person you have to prove yourself to is you. I have a question for anybody living in Brisbane.I'm going up there for a couple of days this month and was wondering if there are any good hobby shops close to the CBD? I was there last year and found a little one in a plaza but can't remember the name.Does anybody have any favourite ones worth looking for ?Thanks,

Thanks for that South Aussie i did try the raaf museum at point cook and they drew a blank,Little didnt join the afc because there were 500 applicants for the first 4 places so he sailed to england and joined the rnas which was combined with the rfc in 1918 to form the raf so i looked at the raf records and drew a blank too. I did happen to find colour plates of the sopwith pup and sopwith triplane he flew before the camel just by typing his name into google but still no pics of the camel which is the one i want to make. This camel doesnt want to be found, anyway i sent an email to a british WW1 historian hoping he can help.If i still cant get a pic ill have to make the triplane N5493 called "BLYMP".Hey does Little still qualify for the group build only asking because he never flew with the AFC but he was an AUSSIE born in Hawthorn Melbourne.
(PS) anyone know who makes sopwith triplanes in 1/48 or larger.

Talk to you soon regards J.S.

Sulo, the only shop i can suggest visiting is Hobby-Rama, its not in the CBD tho, thats the only one i go to apart from online ordering ... its a tad expensive, but there is a massive range of platic models, RC aircraft, the works ...

www.hobbyrama.com.au - website is pretty ... lame, but the address is there and everything, and it only a quick bus ride from the city, if u need more info, just ask

i think i would have a much harder time trying to model something to my satisfaction then the judges ... i set my limits to far above my skill limit ... but thats what this GB is about for me .. tuning my skills into something nice Tongue [:P]

Your right about the skill thing ILuv3ggs. Lost count of the number of times I've stripped and redone just because it don't look like what my minds eye had predictedDisapprove [V]

But that's what keeps me modelling. The fact that it's never 'perfect', but close.

Good point.

I gave up modelling as a first year apprentice, 6-7 years later, I can afford more kits, which makes me less likely to try and "improve" my past efforts. I wish I could just leave well enough alone, and just learn for next time. I am definitely getting better! It is very important to push yourself to better your skills.

Hey, any tips on creating longish grass !? i'll need some for the sides of the road if i am going to put the leopard in a diorama (already started planning ! )

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] I've got to agree with your comments Tweety, in fact the Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner (I use this to strip paint) is never far away. Im about to strip the paint from the fiqure I've just finished and redo it, just don't like the colour the uniform turned out to be. A bit worrying though, this is the fiqure I intend to enter the ACT Comp in June.

My 2 cents [2c]I my opinion, the only challenge worth while is the one you set for yourself, even if it is above your current skill level. My 2 cents [2c]

Hey guys - after reading MS's article in the March FSM about Future floor polish, I dutifully carted myself off to Safeway and got some Pledge One-go. Just one thing - In all the pics I've seen of 'Future' in jars on peoples work-benches it looks dead-set clear, but this stuff is just a bit 'milky'. Am I barking up the right tree?

Cheers! Andy

Yeah Andy, it's the right stuff. Approve [^]

After you pour some into a container and dip a few canopies etc into it, it will turn a touch more cloudyConfused [%-)]
But don't worry, it's all ok, just the way it goes really.

I've got around 14 canopies from a small baby food jar (thanks son!!!) and have never refilled/replaced it, and it's milky as buggery but the canopies are crystal clearWink [;)]

But if your going to clear coat a model, I'd strongly recommend using from the bottle, not the jar (duh!)

South, phroosh, 3ggs, some days your skills, or lack there of, surprise you.
I'm building a Panther G Early version, only my second ever tank, and I'll be stuffed how I managed to get the washes to look so goodBig Smile [:D] (insert boasting here!)

Your minds eye can deceive youMischief [:-,]
Finished a Zero couple of months back. I thought it looked tacky, not what I thought it should look like, so I asked the missus to have a squize before I stripped it back.

She reckoned it was too shiny, so I gave it a squirt of flattened Pledge.
Surprised me when it turned out looking better than I had perceived.Big Smile [:D]

Told the missus I did a whole lot of complex boy stuff to it, cause you NEVER admit they are rightWink [;)]
She smiled and walked away.

Gee, wonder if she beleived meWink [;)]

Mr Muscle Confused [%-)]
Never tried that. Do you use it on acrylics, enamels or laquers?
I used brake fluid and Shell engine degreaser last time. Bit rough on the plastic, but a light sand will sort it out.

Now I'm not a figures man, but is it possible to give the coat an overspray or dusting to bring it to what you want?
Like I said, never made a figure model, so I'm really curious.

Next time your in your local hs, check out if they have any model railway stuff there. They should have some 'grass' that will do the trick.
It comes in long lengths and is pretty thin, kinda hair like, It's called 'Field Grass', made by an American company called Woodland Scenics, and you simply cut it to the length you need and stick it on.
Also comes in different colours, and 12 new and exciting flavours!(j/k)
Got mine from Frontline Hobbies in Newcastle, $11.95.
Hope this helps.
