Hi,

I'm finally (hopefully) back from Canada, and had a couple package waiting for me when I returned.

New Kits

[Oops, sorry.  I should have rotated the image before I posted it]

Although I have a 1/72 scale Revell Flower Class, I've been putting it off until I get a little bit more practice/experience.  However, after taking a tour of HMCS Sackville in Halifax I decided to buy a 1/144 scale version, to build in the meantime.

Other than that I have a fascination with odd looking aircraft and couldn't pass up ordering a copy of the Aerovan and Vimy Commercial, after seeing some info on them online.  I'm a little nervous about the Vimy, since the real plane had a fair amount of rigging, but the Aerovan doesn't look too difficult, though some of the reviews that I have read online do note that the attachment of some parts isn't clear, and that it may take a bit of test fitting to make sure it all fits together OK.

Pat

PS. One thing that gets my about most models of Flower class corvette models is that even though the full scale ship has "keel drag" where the keel line slopes aft (being deeper near the propeller than it is forward) it seems that every kit that I have seen, including this newer 1/144 scale version, come with stands that display the ship with its keel line parallel to the ground, so that the ship ends up looking a bit "nose down" with the waterline lower at the bow than at the stern" Tongue Tied.  I may try and add a "shim" or a strip of styrene to the forward part of the stand to try and make the model sit with the waterline parallel to the ground instead.

Awesome stuff there guys!

Joe: Great stuff but I really love the Tamiya P-38. I'm looking forward to seeing some of those built.

I hear that.  My NEO isn't going to be up to the task....got to dig out the Sata mini jet auto gun for her.

Just take it to your body shop and spray it there. Big Smile

Looks go GM, what's the scale?

She's a short hull, not really the Bloody O. I'll build her as another ship, but it's a good kit as a starting point.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Too bad you had to let it go, you would have done a fatastic job on it.

Steve: That is way too funny. Don't get me wrong, the wife unit is immensely supportive of my hobby and stash. Yet, taking in something as large as the 1/72 Gato might give her a moment of question.

Well, I did not win the 1/72 Gato I bid on. Even though it still went for the bargain price of $71.00, it was a bit more than I was willing to shell out for something I may not have the opportunity to build. It also became apparent to me that I'm not sure how I would have been able to paint that beast. Heck, it's more than twice as long as my spray booth. LOL! That would have been a challenge indeed.

Bish, I'm looking forward to that.

I can honestly say that if that arrived in the post the wife unit would give me a soul wretching stink eye for that one. Not sure I'm willing to go through that.

Always the option of donating it to your state VA office if they have models on display.  VFW or Legion post could be another possibility if you can't find space for her(the boat, not the wife unit).Big Smile

Joe- don't pass it up if you can get a decent price.there is a Big Ed PE, White Ensign radars.  Brass props come up once in awhile.  And you can get 3D guns from Shapeways that are absolutely beautiful.  With your abilities it would be a museum piece

Curses upon you GH. I've put a bid in. Indifferent You may be hearing from the wife unit.

Well, as luck would have it, there is Steve's American ships GB. You can tell the wife unit you just had to get somthing to join in Big Smile.

Yup. That'll be the selling point alright when I inform her that she will have to be moving her house plants off the counter so I can display my shiney new submarine. Not!

The Gato hull is in 6 pieces, the bow and stern sections are about 4-5 inches each and the center is around 40-42 inches.  Big Ed deck replaces the styrene.  Lots of cutting to place those, and 2x2mm cross bracing.  The PE shears are a big focal point, and build in 3 vertical layers.

Mopar Madness

I'd love the 1/72 Revell Type VII Platinum Edition with PE, metal barrels and wood veneer deck.

I would have got that if it had been released at the same time as the first release. Looks nice though i get the impression the wood deck sticks onto the existing deck rather than replace it.

The Type VII is 37 inches, the Type IX a bit bigger. They both come in the same size box, but the Type IX hulls are in 2 parts for each side.

Yeah, the Gato is a big one at 52 inches.  Doing one as SS238, USS Wahoo for MC's American Ship GB.  The VII and IX are what, around 42 inches or so?

Joe, i have hoped that SH might release a 72nd version of that kit after bringing out the 48th, i might wait and see a bit longer before i commit to the Matchbox kit.

I remember just after i bought my Type VII, i had the box next to me and saw a post on here of a bult Type VII next to a built GATO. If i had not had the VII next to me, i would have said that was a small kit, the GATO almost dwarfed it.

I built the Hase 48th Ju 87G-2 a couple of years back, really nice kit, better than their 32nd version. I am sure you will love that one.

Oh wow Bish, I didn't know Revell had come out with a new Uboat.

Bish
lets just say, did not. Yet of course we hardly hear of it.

History is written by the victors.

It was announced at the start of the year but a guy i know from the model club who is big into u-boats hinted at it a few years back. That was before Revell went bust but i was glad to see the new buyers release it. Unfortunatly it won't be making a showing in your German ships GB but the Type VII will.

Joe, yes, displaying these is an issue, which is why i think 2 of these big kits is enough. And i know that the GATO is even bigger than the U-Boats.

U-156 was the boat which sank the SS Laconia and so kicked off the Laconia incident. It was one of those events in WW2 when the Germans acted decently, and the Allies, lets just say, did not. Yet of course we hardly hear of it.

Thanks Bish. Can't say that I was overly familiar with that incident. I am now that much more educated today. Great subject to model.

Yeah, no sooner do I mention that I don't have display space for the 1/72 Gato and then see one for auction on FB and actually consider bidding on it. I can honestly say that if that arrived in the post the wife unit would give me a soul wretching stink eye for that one. Not sure I'm willing to go through that. Or, just maybe......Hmm

Yeah, that Stuka D-5 caught my eye. I've got a couple of the old 1/72 Matchbox 115's in my stash complete with all the AM goodies I could find. Actually one of the builds I'm still anxious to get into.

Great kits!  I'm going to get the p-38 for xmas - or my wife has failed..lol.   Love to see the spru shots/build for the 115.

Just stay on her like you were Ralphie wanting a Red Rider BB Gun. P.S. might want to save your pennies just in case.Wink

I'll try and get you some sprue shots. The apparent issues with the 115 kit are the attachment points for the wings. There aren't much of any. Looks like some scratch built bracing will be required. Otherwise, a dandy looking kit..

Joe, I bet that 115 will take up some serious shelf space! I'm interested to see how that new 109 goes together.

Your observation is dead on Chad. It's nearly the same size as my 1/48 PBY Catalina. It will just barely fit in my display cabinet. The 109 looks to be a beauty of a kit. I was quite pleased to see Tamiya pop a 1/72 of it.
