Okay, guys. Thanks for talking me off the ledge. Indifferent

I am starting work on the auger. My goal is to tackle the undercarriage before moving back to the carriage. So, this includes the auger assembly, a futuristic exhaust system, and I plan an outrigger too. The latter if I can fit one. If this thing is gonna drill through rock, it needs an outrigger to stabilize it.

That's the plan, Stan.

Tim-- you may recognize this piece. It was in the box of bits you shipped me many months back. This is the closest thing I can find to making an auger bit.

I added a blue LED to the tip. This is an ultrasonic probe. Nemo developed ultrasonic obliteration long before modern science did. However, Nemos version is ultrasound on steroids. This technology does the heavy lifting of releasing gold from its host rock. As well... Nemo made handheld units for areas BE can't reach.

As usual getting the LED to show color correctly was a difficult task.

I glued the two halves so that they are offset. That is not how they are meant to be glued. The reason I did this is so that it creates a sort of spiral appearance that augers have, and it creates a functionality where there is a sort of tooth to it where it can grind at the rock.

I am still experimenting adding more detail like some grinding teeth. That remains to be seen.

This is why I so thoroughly enjoy your special projects. It's the vision and imagination that you bring into reality to create something very special.

Ferg, that is exactly how I like to approach my projects. It is a form of creation. You breath life into the project by creating a story, and then the rest always seems to flow in.

I find that it gives me endless inspiration to draw from, and that helps get me through the sometimes long build cycle. Along with that, it's fun, and it seems to open doors to new and interesting ideas. And usually, it inspires others as well. I have seen it happen over and over where others tap the same inspiration and they then send the project in a new direction. I love that because then it's not just my creation, it's a collaboration. In fact, that happened several times with this build. From the gun turret on the roof to the auger I am currently working on. If I am not mistaken both were suggestions by others. Anyway, I think it is cool you appreciate the goodness of this process.

As always, thanks for following, appreciating, and posting.

Little bit of an update. I cut Evergreen round stock into nubs simulating a sort of tooth to it. Then using purchased styrene rivets I added them for detail. Thought all that might dress it up some.

Also, I found this 24th scale figure I am considering. It would be modified to the vision I have in mind but it gives a good place to start from. I guess one of these days I should fill you in on the entire vision of this build.

Well guys, life is too short, my time is too precious. I am not continuing this build. It was a sad moment to pack it away considering all the work I had put into this.

My heart is not in it. Against my instincts I thought I might recapture the spirit of the build, but every part of me is kicking and screaming, NO! Strange how that happens.

It is time to do something I will enjoy. If I decide to do another WIP, it may be in the Ships section. Or maybe not.

Bakster.

Thanks, Steve. I am definitely feeling like doing a ship. I was waffling about maybe doing the larger scale Mayflower I had purchased, but I am not all in on that yet. That is a major project for me and I am not feeling like a long drawn out build. It is a project that I really want to do though, just not now.

I happened on another kit I have, Revells North Sea Trawler. Bought it a few years back for less than $15. What a great value for several months of fun. I might turn it into a seascape dio.

I started it last night and I have the hull halves glued. This could be a cool project with of course... some custom stuff in the mix. Sadly-- the hull has lots of sink marks. So, there is much prep work. Not to mention all the portholes and windows are molded closed. That is not gonna stand; I will open them.

Jury is out if I will do a WIP. Probably not. The forum in general is slow and except for a few faithful, contribution from members is abysmal.

As Walter Cronkite used to say, And that's the way is.

Ships needs a "prod" beyond the 16" turret build Smile

Advantage of a trawler is that the sinkholes can be carved into dets and dings, and improve the kit Smile

Also, with a trawler, you can frill out some of the portholes and then put simulated plywood behind them Smile

Probably the worst thing about a trawler is in modeling up all the clutter and top hamper they need.  Which may want a trip to Jo-Ann to get tuille fabric for nets, and a variety of beads for floats.

At least the painting is easy   Paint the whole thing Rust color, then drybrush on traces of actual finish paint.  Smile  (You might want some whit oil paint for salt crusting, and green for mold and slime.)

Lol. Yeah... one could take it to that level of use for sure. I like that vision of it and it would stand out from many other builds of the same model. Good input, Capn. I will give that some serious thought!

Agreed about the ships section but as an example, Steve5 has a beautiful build going on there and he receives little attn. You, TB, myself, and one or two others post to it. Again, the faithful few. I will hold back how I feel about that but that is another example of why I miss John T. The man understood the value of supporting those taking the time to share their builds. And he crossed the line of genre as well. He would not post to just ship builds. You are also on that very short list that supports them and does the same. Hats off to YOU, my friend.

The forum is turning into a morgue. It does not help that the website is still broken with no end date in sight. It's functional, but barely. And I will hold back about that too.

Thanks again, Capn.

Well you gotta do what's best for Bakster.

If you ain't feeling it there's no reason to push forward on this. If you do then it's a job not a hobby...

I hope you don't mind if I jump in every now and again and make bad 'Jaws' jokes about your trawler...

Yeah the forum seems almost dead. It's a shadow of what it was when I joined. I guess I'm not helping though, I've been on a modeling slump for a couple years now. I keep starting stuff but never seem to finish anything.

PS: I have found that in the case of really bad burn-out 'egg' planes and 'toon' tanks and other silly simple kits help a lot. Just slapping the thing together, and a quick coat of paint without worrying about how accurate it is or isn't helps a lot with not bogging down on the details.

Okay... took the plunge with no life preserver. Anyone interested in seeing me tread water... I will be in the Ships section under Revell Northsea Fishing Trawler.

It's time to go fishing.

YT will take some of the blame, to my thinking.

There's no hassle about havign to stop and take photos, then find a hosting site, then comose posts and threads.

Just set up a camera and build away.  Then, spend tedious time editing it, doing graphics and voice-over, and all that effort.  But, when you are done, it's a complete thing.  Once it uploads to YT, you are done.

And, you can even build communities of like-minded folk, who can interact in a middling immediate fashion, and very directly.  Steve at The Model Shed has done this.  A number of other modelers have done similarly.  One o Steve's specific features is that he has a live premiere broadcast of a modeling episode every Friday (about 1400 CDT).  So, people can interact with him, directly, as the video rolls.  This creates a strong amount of back and forth.  And near all of the "regulars" have their own YT channels, too.

And, there's the very real issue that the modeling community is aging; it's not really a young demographic as much.  And, those that are, they are going to be more oriented to video hand the print-based forum format.

It's a quandry.

That is an interesting theory, Capn. I watch a ton of YT and subscribe to several modeling channels. Every evening I am looking for some new builds. I should drop cable because I seldom watch it. I never thought I'd use Roku much when I bought it. Now, it's replaced the cable box. I can always find something interesting to watch.

Hey Bakster, whilst I love the work you've done with the wheels and the auger, if it's not working, don't push it. It'll only end in tears. Sorry if I helped push you into something you didn't want to do.

I'm not sure about your comments on the forum. Lord knows I've had my complaints about the site over time and it landed me in strife and it clearly does have problems. You've been here longer than me and that puts you in a better position to judge the then and now stuff, so I'm a bit confused about the "morgue" comment. I try to support builds where I can, but there are so many and I don't have a lot of time. Nor am I a person who spends a lot of time on the computer.

On a more positive note I am also building the North Sea trawler. I live in a fishing port and know a number of trawler skippers. Would you like some reference photos of gear and wear and tear?

Hey Ferg! Yes! Please post photos to my North Sea Trawler in the ships section. I would appreciate that and I am sure others will too. Thanks my friend.
