Looking good! Can't have too many forts!

By the way where you get the image of SJ? Just download from somewhere, or what? Can't seem to find one on a white background. Been wanting to do a model of her for a while.

Keep in mind that the "SJ" lettering is "handed".. It's foward of the portrait of Betty Grable on both sides of the nose..

I googled image searched to a good pic of SJ and FDthat was square enough, right clicked it and had a friend erase the airplanes from the the pics, leaving only the actual nose art. And that is what you see in the decals. The fun part was prining them on regular paper so I could cut them out and check size against the model.

cool beans man! i been slowly but surely building my B-17GBig Smile i got it for 15.00 minus decals and the i sheet (didn't need it anyway, ive built more than a few of them in my time)  im doing a early version of "little patches" i highly recommend the two new B-17 in action/ walk around books from squadron they have a great panoramic view of the cockpit  "shoo, shoo, shoo, baby" in there, it really helped with mine.

p51 mustang, thanks for the insight on the walk-arounds. It is good to know what your getting before puting your money out.

I have a visable B-17 that has crew members. Does the standard B-17G have crew members?

On the Bench:

Revell 1/96 USS Constitution - rigging

Revell 1/48 B-1B Lancer Prep and research

Trumpeter 1/350 USS Hornet CV-8 Prep and research

Freak'n awesome thread, with plenty of pics of the restoration of the B-17G formally known as Marry Alice. Well worth the time to go through.

just the standard five, 3 standing 1 sitting 1 squatting (2 standing pilots, 3 groundcrewmen) nothing spectacular, good for a simple diorama, definately shows the massive size differance between the B17 and its crew

I think my project is dead at the moment after 4 years.  I'm just not liking where it's going right now.  I didn't get as much detail into the plane as I wanted could've done a better job making battle damage.  My modeling skills also aren't where I would like them to be for a project such as this, so I'm gonna put away the whole thing and may end up starting with a new plane whenever I decide to start it up again.  The story behind the dio I plan on doing is too good to just ditch the whole project, so it will definitely get done sometime, but just not right now.  I've got a few projects I want to get at that kept getting put on hold because of the B-17, so I'm gonna do those to hone my skills so that I can tackle the dio the way I want to.

Slow progress is being made on the D.  The canopy is on, now to just smooth the joints.

That's why I'm not giving up on it completely, just putting it away for the time being.  I've invested ALOT of time into researching this whole project, to the point that I know the number of missions this plane flew before the one I want to depict, and also the name of every single plane from all 4 bomb squadrons that flew that mission and which ones did and dindt come back and how much damage they received and who was injured, etc.  I've gotten to know more than I need to know, it's just a matter of not rushing and executing right.  Hell, I'm still doing research as I type this since I love doing it so much.....I just need a break from it for a little while

Nice work on the D model! I'm getting ready to start my building my G here in a few weeks as my winter project...alongside my F-106 & F-15C. I'm building up a supply of parts, but was curious about any dissimilarity between the Monogram B-17 and the Revell B-17....are they the same kit? I'm finding the Monogram kits on Ebay cheaper than the Revell kits, and if they are the same, well that just means my air field is about to get much bigger...

Any help would be great.

  2. 1/48 Academy Spitfire Mk. XIVc
  3. 1/48 Tamiya Beaufigher TF Mk.X
  4. 1/48 Tamiya F-15C
  5. 1/48 Revell F-15E Strike Eagle
  6. 1-48 Revell B-17G

The Monogram B-17 is a -G model (has a chin turret), while the Revell is the earlier -F model (no chin turret).  They are similar in some respects, as some people have put the interior of the Monogram -G in the Revell -F.  Wings are the same, as well as you have the option to perform surgery on both kits to get the different versions of the -F style nose using pieces from both kits.

Thanks, and no I didn't use the new B-17 walk around, as that covers just the -G model. I'm using the book In Detail and Scale: B-17 Vol 1: Protype to Production.  There are two more of these books that cover the different variations of the B-17 (which will come in handy when I get to those variations).

As for the finish, its going to be OD/NG.  But I have two more of these C/D conversions, so I'm going to be doing a -C and another -D both in NMF.
