I decided to add sound, motors, and lighting to my fort. The kit won't be here for at least a month. So I'm going to put the fuselage aside until it arrives. I don't know what changes I'll have to make to get the equipment installed. The wings need a lot of work so I'll get going on those. I'm going to open up a few panels on those to show the wing structure and maybe a fuel cell or two. Thinking about engine details as well.

Getting started on the wings while I wait on the electronics.  I did a bondo squeeze between the upper and lower wing skins.  The outer one will be used as a template to create the spars and wing ribs, and the inner squeeze will be used for spar and rib templates then to create fuel cells.

About 4 years ago , Nine O Nine had an extended visit at our local airport due to an engine change. Wish I had taken more pics , but hears what I do have.



This ones of a more recent visit.

Rob;  Did you catch my post of the B-17 restorations at the USAF Museum?  I've taken some nice pictures of the "Memphis Belle" in pieces at that facility.

I've got some good interior shots, she's still stripped pretty empty, but they show framing details.  Let me know if you are looking for anything in particular.  Rick

Rob, I do have a great shot of one of the "Memphis Belle's" engines.  Interesting that the "Belle" had two Wright and two Studebaker R1820 engines when it came to the restoration facility. 

If you'd like to open up a flap or two, here was a rebuilt flap just laying around.

This is the start of the RH Landing Gear Well.  Most everything is scratch built.  The kit provides very little detail.

These are Verlinden Turbos.

Here's how I built the Wheel Wells.

Start by cutting a round disc and marking a centerline.  File and sand the bottom half until it fits keeping an eye on your centerline so it doesn't go too low.  This is the firewall.

When you have a good fitting firewall and in the proper position, mark and file the kit wheel well floor.  The picture below shows an unmodified part at the top and the bottom is filed and ready to be installed.

Glue the kit wheel well floor to the new firewall.  Do not glue the firewall to the bottom wing yet.

These are the remaining parts.  Mid bulkhead, rear bulkhead, horizontal wall, wing leading edge cover, and cover for turbo area.

Glue the small bulkheads into position and use the wing as a guide to position the horizontal wall to the inside of the opening.

Trim the mid bulkhead to the horizontal wall.  Glue the large mid bulkhead to the upper portion of the wheel well floor making sure it is lined up with the lower portion.


Remove the 2 front pins from the upper wing.  Fill and sand as needed where the pins used to be.

Add strings to upper and lower wings.  Hold off adding the circular stringers to the lower wing until the upper wing has dried.  I'll finish the stringers tomorrow.

Now that the fire wall and rear bulkhead have been set, you can separate the two.  File and sand the rear so it's flush.  The front should have the attachment points for the landing gear.


Using the top wing as a guide, mark the lower wing where the stringers are to be placed, and complete the stringers.


Exhaust shield is next, but might have to wait until next week.  I think I'm headed up north to help the MIL.

Starting with 5/32 tubing, I cut a piece in half length wise.  Cut a slight angle on one end so the bend points towards the turbo charger.  Glue on a short piece of tubing to that end.  After it has cured, hold into position between the fire wall and rear bulkhead and mark where the stringers go.  Add the strings following then glue this to the inside of the wheel well.

I started the Oil tanks which are located in the wheel wells.  These are 36.9 gallons each.  One for each engine.  I won't be putting them in the outboard engine nacelles since they can't be seen.

I started by cutting some plastic stock to the shape I liked, drilled 2 1/16 holes and used 1/16 styrene rod to hold the 2 ends together.

The turbo chargers have been assembled and drilled out on the ends and are ready for the waste gates.

Thanks guys.  Ya chuck.  I applied some bondo between the stryene last night and will start sanding tonight.  I havn't decided if I'm going to show them with the insulation, or just the aluminum shell....Indifferent

I wish I could do a presentation like you....You're the masterBow Down......I would love to Fritzi's American cousin to narrate my build....  Huh?
