Yeah Richard that would be a very small leap for a froggie, considering you have a habit of hopping the pond for fun But I do see the Field Marshal has you hopping too

I'm so sorry Manny... But our (dutch) xmass lasts two days, not one.... Sorry excuse but there you have it.

After closing it all up and sanding the heck out of it i started painting. I chose a rlm 70/71 over 76 splinter camo:

I must warn all who will build the dragon: You will encounter revell/ monogram type of wing/ fuselage joints and particularly difficult was the nose piece to forward fuselage join. It made fitting the canopy a nightmare for me and took lots of fitting and fiddling around.

The engine hatches are glued on with microscale's Micro liquitape. First time i used that and appearantly it works like a yellow post-it note. You can take it off and put it on indefinately and still it should stick into place.... verdict to follow... Hope you guys like my work sofar...

Very nice finish you achieved after al of that filling and sanding...so if I understand you, you will be able to pull those engine access panels off after painting to show the engines?

Richard ohhhhhhh the 229 is looking good, cant wait to see the splinter camo on that wing. I have some of the liquitape too, but haven't used it yet, so please let us know how it works. I am happy as ........well I am glad you don't have to hide those engines, they came out too well to be hidden from view.

Hey just a thought maybe you could take a pic of one of the 1/72 builds next to this beast for giggles ??

Richard: Looking good! I was wondering why the Revell 1/72nd kit looks almost as if it were designed to display the engine when there is no engine! Looks like they just pantographed the Dragon kit down and didn't change much of the features! 

Anyway friends, frogs, and field marshals the Ki-229 is painted. Still need to do a little touch-up work but it shouldn't be long before I can get some gloss and decals on her:

Yes, I'm aiming for a license built Japanese Ho. Was thinking at work today that the white home defense bands were applied to army a/c but I used navy green for the uppers. Oh well, in my fantasy scenerio the Japanese navy beginning in '46 painted white bands on their a/c too. I like the bands, without something like splinter camo I think the green would be too bland.

Kermit - looking' good buddy, making great progress & thanks for all the build tips. Great to have someone forge ahead so the rest of the gang knows what to watch for!  The splinter camo on a 229 sort of looks like a naval "dazzle pattern", in a good way!

Gamera - I'm liking the Japanese-style wing stripes, and non-slip yellow leading edges.

Hoping to do some more rib-cutting tonight while my P-38 needs wait time in between stages. (And when my  cold medication isn't screwing me up!)

The what if aspect of this group is really going to be fun me thinks, after all there was only one that flew with one set of markings. OH I can picture it now !! A 1/72 Ho 229 with a flame and skull scheme

Kermit and you said you didnt do well with german paint schemes, yeah right That splinter came out great IMHO and really makes that wingthing look sinister. Cant wait to see her all finished with the masking gone and those engines showing against the wing.

Well, i found a significant difference between the revell and dragon offering just now....

While i am finalizing the undercarriage assembly prior to decalling i was looking at the instructions as a preparation for what comes after that (little antennae, pitot tube, gun blast tubes etc.) and saw that the dragon offering has that ring-like antenna on the belly. The revell antenna is on top of the plane just aft of the canopy....

Who can give me the answer on who is correct here? Oh and for the history buffs amongst you: Why do those german planes have two antennae? (the ring thing and the long thin one under the wing).

The DF Loop (direction finder) antennae placement could be in either position---it was never fitted to the prototypes so it could have been placed in either location...the long antennae under the wing is also speculation...so their placement isn't "wrong", just speculative...
