Gamera

BTW Thanks Vettman and Vance!

P-38: Wow - looking forward to seeing the 1/48 kit. I was suprised how large the a/c was in 1/72nd, the 1/48th should be quite impressive.

And I call Manny Herr Field Marshal since I was brought up to respect my elders and Manny is what- about 120-130 years old now? Wink

PS I thought about asking Manny to replace the term MOJOs with HOHOs considering the Christmas season. Then on second thought the idea of having Manny refering to me as his 'ho' is somewhat disturbing... Indifferent

Just trying to be funny... Hell i'm not even building a revell 1/72 Horten right now...at this very moment.....not even filling seams on it or planning the paint job... I deny everything. What's a HOBAG anyways??

OK, in the bizarre world of the FSM forums.... I just received an email from one of the girls I work with - a very attractive young lady - reading (I kid you not)...

"If you can, I would really appreciate that.  You are the best!!!   Are you ready for HO-HO??"

Embarrassed I am suddenly concerned that my reply can and will be taken the wrong way. Suggestions? (Shouyld this post be moved to the illustrious 229 thread??)

See what a motivated frog can do with a decent 229 kit, some glue and primer...the rest of you MOHO's need to get a crackin'---especially ya'll MOJO's who claim to be gonna "scratchbuild" this thing---yeah I'm talking to you, Vance!

Jahwol mein herr! Patience Feldmarschall, it takes time for the basswood to be grown, milled, cured and  delivered to me by a 1/72 driver & 8 tiny reindeer...

OK, here are the beginnings of "my kit"...

And just to keep Hammer happy, the basswood is American-grown & supplied by Revell - purchased with an infamous 40% coupon; the plans & instructions have been sourced from various online locations at no cost to myself; and all paperwork has been reduced to 1/72 scale and printed at my office! Yes

VC -- now that is ambitious! If you can scratch build it in wood, I think I can manage to stick a few bits of plastic together and dip it in paint!

Cheers, VERY interested to see how this works!

Well Thunderbolt, I figure there needs to be some wood in it to keep true to the original!!

The plan (subject to change at any moment!) is to use the basswood for the ribs/runners etc, and skin it with sheet styrene, so I can scribe the panel lines more accurately. Kinda backwards I guess. Cockpit components & landing gear basics will come from the spares box. Canopy, uhhhh, thinking about trying to thermo-form some clear sheet over a form, will be tricky though.

The ever-benevolent Manny has given me some leeway considering I'm trying to scratch it.

To be honest... I'm very interested to see how this works too! Wink

Vance: very cool idea- Manny should give you extra credit for building a wooden aircraft out of wood.

Only question is I'd have went with a bigger scale- 1/48 or 1/32 simply because I think bigger parts would be easier to work with. Still your eyes and fingers are probably sharper than mine. Blind Fold

Well I was serious (and don't call me Shirley...) about wanting to scratch one of these MOHOs... a buddy of mine in high school built full-on flying models & I always enjoyed checking out his workbench.

After some digging I found what you see there for the inner assembly diagrams. No luck with the outer wing structure though, so I'll be, uhh, winging it. I think I'll take the outer most rib that I have a shape for, figure out how many I need to get to the tip & just keep reducing the master that I have until I have enough. The curves are pretty consistent so I should be able to pull it off. I think skinning it with thin sheet styrene is going to be simpler though, not enough flex with the balsa or basswood options. And I can scribe panel lines into the styrene. I think that combo means I'll need to grab some 2-part epoxy though.

Thoughts/suggestions from anyone will be welcomed!

Yup, I'm with you on the 1/48, larger parts would have been easier to deal with, but I'm going small for 3 reasons.

  1. I've got to put it somewhere when its done!
  2. It's a pretty basic shape, really only wing ribs to deal with, so the small parts won't be too hard to deal with.
  3. The spares box! Over the past 12+ years I've built mostly 1/72, including several Me262s and Me163s, so Ive got some cockpit pieces I can re-purpose. Also, a spare 1/48 main wheel from the spares will probably be about right for the nosewheel on this thing.

If it goes well I may try another in 1/48, using some aftermarket add-ons to flesh it out.

Impressive plans, i have to say!Yes. Are you planning on using a tubestructure for the interior as did the original? Can't wait to see it taking shape!Stick out tongue

Ok,.....

Just received my dragon version in the mail. Waited for two weeks (coming from china...) And man....they weren't kidding saying the revell one is based on this one. It's even ridiculously obvious!:

Especially this one is probably very familiar to the owners/ builders of the revell version:

Looking forward to cutting sprue on this one!Eats But first my 1/72 one ofcourse. Just wanted to share these pics.

Hey Kermit - the only tube structure I'm planning on this one is whatever is visible from the cockpit, the inner ribs are just going to be there to keep the proper shape.

Well, until this thing starts shaping up, I can only claim to be "planning to be the man"! I expect a thorough verbal thrashing - especially from this gang - if it doesn't come together as planned - that should be enough to drive me to the finish line... Black Eye

Hmmm, you could mask a large 229 area, switch the mottling from olive outside the area to brown etc inside the area...

ooh - ooh - ooh - I've got it! Just use the green mottle all over, but use 229 little "mottles" to cover the area! Let me know how that one works for ya!!

That's a cool idea...I plan on using some spare a/c decals and giving the plane the tactical number,  "229".

For those MOHO's who are doing a "natural" unpainted plane in its original materials, one could use a white prisma pencil and stencil "229" somewhere as if it is a factory marking...
