No joy on th infamous fruit tree incident but I have other wrecked pics of earlier prototypes...

The GB started 12-1...

What do you think of the Revell kit?

Oh goodie! I can startStick out tongue. Guess i just post here then.

Hmmm... the revell Go229 in a nutshell...

Pro:

Cheap (10 euro's is a normal price here, translates into roughly 12-13 bucks)

Well molded (some revell is crap, the newer stuff quite good. This is a newer one)

Decals (I NEVER ever had any problem whatsoever with revell decals and this kit is no exception, options for two aircraft)

Ease of construction (This one fits together very well with minimal sanding and filling horror)

Con:

No engines (you get the fron and the end to stick into the holes with nothing inbetween)

Canopy (usual revell clear parts. quite ok but a bit on the thick side in this scale)

That about sums it up i guess. You get alot of bang for buck and it is a breeze to construct. You can get a few pics of the sprues and box somewhere around page 7 or 8 in the Early jets GB thread.Wink

Hope thees vets your appetite mein general!

Thats sounds good to me. I haven't got mine out of the plastic yet, so not had that close a look. The canopy is easy to replace, squadron do one for the 229.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Yeah, just post in here---I can change the title later...I've heard that the decals are the weakest part of the kit--I robbed some 72nd 262 decals for mine...the glass is thick but I plan on my canopy being slid open so no big deal there...

I agree that the engines are probably the biggest let-down...there is a good review that shows a guy "blanking-off" the exhaust area from the inside with some card-stock so you won't be looking thri the a/c once everything is buttoned up...I bought a resin Jumo engine and am thinking of modifying mine to show it opened up but am not sure if it is worth the trouble and risk...I'll see if I can find the link---

...it pays to read a few build reviews---also watch the placement of part 9 in step 3--it says in the same review that this is shown going in upside down...

Manstein's revenge

...it pays to read a few build reviews---also watch the placement of part 9 in step 3--it says in the same review that this is shown going in upside down...

Hmmm....

Just took a minute to read through that review and it seems that, though it's obviously the same mold, there are a few differences between that kit and the current boxing. The boxart is different, it has different decals and the styrene is grey, not green. Just took a moment to take this picture:

Ofcourse i could be wrong and i can't really recall having trouble there but it seems either your reviewer was wrong or the instructions have been reworked. Looks right to me. Step 10 shows the same assembly being glued in and looking just the same.

These decals were just fine to me (try the academy decals i used for their F86 and P38.....now THOSE are bad). The only decal that has an excessive amount of film would be number 7. These are the red outline-stripy-thingies that go on the wing and are filled in with carrier film. No silvering on my completed model though...

The card stock filling of the engine compartiments look like a sensible thing to do, have to agreeSmile

Cool, I was sorta thinking maybe they corrected the instructions as well, although the diagrams aren't the best in portraying the part in question---I think the square blob that sticks up is supposed to represent a gun sight? Gonna cut that off and scratch one instead...The blanking off tip is a good one however...

Okay, where's the WIP's?  Ya'll waiting on your wives' permission to get started???

Perhaps you should ask a mod to move this to your "Dead Hobbies" thread Manny?? May be a more appropriate place for it seems.....

Well if people could find decent kits of the 229 it would help!

DML's 1/48 scale offering is a good choice, hopefully someone will have pictures and a review of it soon. Somewhere there are a few on the back shelf collecting dust with a 2003 price tag!

Or it could just be the fact that it ends on 2-29 and that isn't until the year 2012, that everyone is just taking thier time with this one???

Go for it Jester. Be warned though, non-finishers are likely to be flogged. Or awarded one of Manny's infamous "229" badges. Wink

Do yourself a favor and buy the Revell 72nd scale version...easy to find, cheap and very nicely detailed...also, won't take up your whole shelf once you build it...I have one and can vouch for it...very nice kit...

I wonder why Wingnut isn't in this GB?

He probably saw "229" and decided to steer clear! You may have to send him an official invitation now that it is an official build.

Alright, after some searching online I have found... all kinds of pictures of 229s; several good multi-view plans; and this morning, fuselage & wing rib structure plans from an R/C site. I think I'm officially going the scratchbuilt route on this one. The canopy my be tricky. I'm planning on 1/72. I can probably thermo-form some clear sheet plastic from some packaging, just need to make a wooden master that looks right!

~edit~

OK, not the right flying wing, but there are some interesting pics of an earlier Horten effort from the Deutsches Museum:
http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/luc_colin3/horten_iv/

Some construction methods with the wooden structure would have been similar to the 229.

There were several R&D versions of this thing...all but the final proto-type were either glider or prop versions...completing one of these will still qualify for the GB...

Going to Halifax to hit the 2 LHS's (Marine & Maritime hobby) soon and will see if either has the 1/72 scale Revell kit of HOPEFULLY the DML 1/48 scale one hiding on a dusty shelf. Basically these two are the best offerings of a Ho 229!

My Revell kit came today, and yes it is a big sucka. Here she is compared to an old and rather worse for wear 1/72nd P-47, not a tiny aircraft either:

Cool...looks like you got a good start going there...any fit issues?  Maybe your post will motivate these other lazy *MOJO's in here...the fun part will be deciding on a scheme and markings...I think my aircraft number will be---you guessed it---229...

Haven't really started on her yet. Just washed the spues off with some detergent and thought I'd detach some of the larger parts just to get an impression of the size of the finished model. I'd always imagined the 229 to be a smallish aircraft but as you said it is pretty big- the wingspan is about that of  a 1/48th A6M or Bf109.

Gamera,

Thanks buddy! I was thinking over some 'what if' paint schemes and thought about 'the Punisher' style skull across the back in light gray over darker gray. Mostly because that aircraft looks so menacing and almost science fiction.

Watched the documentary again where they reconstructed a 1/1 scale mock-up to test the Ho 229's stealth properties. Excellent production and great computer generated graphics of the Ho in combat.

..now I just need the kit....Hmm

SP: When I think of the 229 and superheroes I tend toward Batman (wonder why!?!) but the Punisher sounds cool too. The Revell kit seems pretty common so hopefully you can find one.

Gee Manny, you are a harsh taskmaster Indifferent When I posted I'd only had the kit a couple of hours. I'll get started on the cockpit tonight- promise! You don't need to break out the Prussian disciple on me yet... Crying
