Well, I've always liked Fletcher-class destroyers.  Built a Revel "The Sullivans" back in the dark ages.  A "Graf Spee" would be nice, too.

Carsanab -- sweet, I confess to developing a softspot for floatplanes and indeed for Japanese markings. I did Hasegawa's N1K1 floatplane at the beginning of the year and really enjoyed it.

Next, RLM 04 on.

The yellow is a homebrew, I don't have MM Acryl's 04 yet so I mixed it from Tamiya, XF-3, XF-2, XF-64 and XF-7 (10:17:2:1). You'll notice the AB is splattering a bit, the acrylics never seem to go through as cleanly as enamels used to. I'll clean it thoroughly before I get to the camo. Next up, masking...

I have yet to have much luck with pre-shading, I suppose I'm laying on too much paint in the top-coat. Looking good, your Ho with the yellow nose!

The update - I will be alone all day Saturday while SWMBO & child are shopping in Bangor. Translation: V eats take-out & the table can be left set up all day for Ho-work, which will involve all sorts of sawing, scraping & sanding w/ dust everywhere. I should have pics for the following Monday. (Have I mentioned that I hate building at the kitchen table?!?! )

T-Bolt- that HO's looking good. Glad to see everyone's making progress, we'll have to throw a gallery together when they're done.

Today's progress, RLM 76 applied:

This is a homebrew from Tamiya Acrylics. The prehsade is barely visible here, but it's there in reality, quite subtle.

I'll be changing my gas cyclinder tomorrow or the day after, then I can cruise to the finish. With the last available bar of pressure I can tidy up a few spots on this and other models, there are some prop blades to spray for a 109. Today's session included gear bay door exteriors for this and the 109. The gear bays will be masked and resprayed after main shades are complete, including clear coats.

I'll keep on plugging away, we might see a completion next week.

I have some questions... Maybe they have been asked already but I really rather not read the entire thread looking for the answers. There is a lot of posts here.

My understanding of the HO229 is that only two protoypes actually flew.  That it never made it past "prototype status".  Is that correct?

Also, there is discussion here on the paint schemes, plural.  Is there an "official" paint scheme for the Horton? Or, because it never made into production any paint scheme, based on other German aircraft,  is fair game?

I came across this artist's rendition (above pic) which I think is rather.. uhm, awesome. 

I have a HO sitting here (a kit gents!); I might just crack it open and build it.  I have not decided yet.

One prototype flew & then lost an argument with a stand of trees. Second prototype was on the verge, but was never airborne. I think (feel free to beat me with a rubber hose & correct me!) those two were green+green splinter camo. And yes, anything based on a Luftwaffe a/c is fair game.

The one at the Smithsonian is dark gray(RLM 75) / RLM 76 splinter over RLM 76. And please, no talk of rubber hoses for the next week or so. .

I took the liberty, assuming like you said that none made it into production, and made my infamous Spotted Ho.....so GO FOR IT!!!!!!

In regards to Echo139er's question,  two aircraft got airborne, the unpowered V1 and the powered V2 that Erwin Ziller died in.  Looking at the photos of the V1, it looks like it was painted in a single dark green topside and RLM-65 or RLM-76 light blue underneath.  I know RLM-65 is the older, brighter blue, but I have read cases where development aircraft were allegedly painted in whatever stocks that were on hand including older colors.  The Schiffer book on the Ho-229 has a lot of good photos of the V1.

Clear photos of the V2 are few and of relatively poor quality, so making a determination of paint scheme and even markings is difficult.  I'd love to have someone respond with "you are wrong, Mr. Dumbfutz" and post links to nice clear photos.  Maybe someone in the former Sov-Bloc has all the good pictures and film footage.

I have a pet theory (only a hunch guys, not some statement based on authoritative documentation) that the V2 was actually powered by BMW, not Jumo engines.  The reason I say this is that the intakes were flush with the leading edge of the wings, which would be consistent with the smaller diameter BMWs.  The unfinished V3 which resides at Silver Hill has bulged intake lips, and most definitely is fitted with the larger Jumos.  Another pet theory is that the rectangular fairing that accomodates the V3's main wheels were a necessary modification to provide clearance for the Jumos.  The Ho-229 was initially to have been fitted with the BMWs , but according to several accounts, it was decided to switch to the more powerful Jumos.  My gut feeling is that the engine change went into effect on the V3, not V2.

Thus, the 1/48 DML and 1/72 RoG kits represent the H0-229 V3, not V2.  (And DML's two seater is based on the V6 airframe, I think.)  Since the V3 was never finished, the paint scheme is up for grabs.  Most likely the usual RLM 81/82-83/76 mix would apply.

Hi all, some progress to report (no pics yet).

Masking is underway, leading and trailing edges are done with tape and I'll stuff the exhausts with tissue. I might augment the preshade here and there, and I'm hoping to spray the RLM 75 tomorrow. I'll be working in Acryls; I've been spraying Acryls on an armour model in the last few days and I think I'm getting the hang of them. I'm thinking of using a more complex splinter pattern than the instructions provide, one of those created by digital artists for their photo-composites, and doing the masking hard-edge for simplicity.

A tiny bit pebbly, I adjusted the mix and it's a more confortable satin hereafter.

Digital splinter pattern masked today:

I touched up the preshade with flat black, then went ahead and laid on the RLM 74:

A few touchups and I'll be ready for clearcoats, decals and panel accents...
