WOW !

This thread didn't spill over to a new page even after 6 days...........Embarrassed

Building that wooden artillery piece must have taken a lot out of Manny or he'd have demanded to know:

" What's going on in here?! "

I humbly submit that I shall add a goofy-looking Albatross ( a la Rhyme of the ancient Mariner) to my signature graphic until such time as I complete the Horten 229.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

Nope - I had several evenings last week, and lots of time over the weekend, to spend on the Horten project. I'm at a point with it where I can't make my fingers do what my brain envisions. To be honest, I may have been better off starting with a solid block of basswood & going absolutely old-school & carving the bloody thing. I think my expectations are likely too high on this one. It needs to be out of sight for awhile so I can focus on a couple of items that I can complete to my satisfaction... then it can come back out at a later date.

That's surprising---the last pics of it showed great promise...although, that was so long ago my memeory probably isn't accurate of what I actually saw...Can you repost pics of where it stands now or has it turned to dust...

mid-wing skinned over, outer wing panels solid basswood. The biggest problem right now is the leading edge of the wing, trying to get a profile that is close to correct. Maybe if I cut the existing structure back 1/4" or so, I could add a basswood strip & sand it down to the correct contour??

You can see the gap I'm fighting with here...

Also having no fun trying to get the (insert giggle here...) engine pods to settle in as I'd like them to. Maybe I need to go at those the "other way 'round"... get the pods to fit & align first, and then make room for the cockpit?? Bang Head

Vance.. you may try heat forming some thin card stock around a pencil or rod to form your leading edges.. also do the same to form the external skin around the engines..

Any chance of using straight sprue for the leading edges and then just blending the sheet stock into the sprue?

hmmm - some options I hadn't thought of. I had tried the pencil/heatform once already but couldn't get a decent (consistent) profile to work with. Maybe more heat... I have the sheet styrene to work with. Sprue on the leading edge could be an option, but I think I need to cut that upper wing surface back some anyway so I can keep the profile...

Radioactive fire breath in controlled dosages might do the trick...

Dude, you are on the downward track of getting this done...glue the pit area and engine pods down and form the area in question w/ putty, or glue some balsa or basswood blocks down and carve/sand the area into shape...no excuses at this point---except laziness!

Jawohl mein herr! The tribe has spoken, formers to be trimmed back, basswood blocking at the front of the wings. Hey, I wonder if ChukW's animated ladies are available for project work??? Maybe that's what is really missing....

Don't give up Vance!! I would scrap the wings, and do them from solid bass. As far as the engines, mount those mojos and work around them. No added pressure, but I have postponed accepting a cat-head until that HO is finished! Have you figured out a camo scheme yet?

I have many books and my Lair smells of rich mahogany!!! Stay thirsty my fellow MOJOs!

Camo scheme plan is still an over-water pattern; splinter camo with disruptive squiggles as I've seen on some Ju88s. I'm going to breathe deeply & try bass stock on the leading edges only - I actually do like how the profile worked after running plastic sheet over the ribs, some putty & that'll be fine. The freakin' leading edges.... right, breathe... BREEEATHE. (but not too deeply, that basswood dust just doesn't go away!)

Vance -- for the leading edges I suggest a laminate of styrene, put together with CA and then CA'd back to the skin and formers. Then adze the laminate together with the side of a blade. I've done this a few times, it works perfectly and the final result is rock hard and will never move again. The laminate allows you to pre-shape the profile in two axes so you build in the correct taper out to the wingtip from the start, and create an "Aztec step" that mimics the curvature. Finish off with putty and wet sand all over. The drawbacks are the amount of measuring and scoring out of sheet material, and the fact you end up wading in styrene shavings. I have a plane project at the back of my mind and that'll be the leading edge technique for sure...
