Guys, really great works being accomplished here.

Question for the experts on JG 53 during the Malta campaign, summer of 1942.  Tactical colour for the pertinent staffels (2, 5, and 8) - were they always black during this period, or was red also used?

regards,

Jack

Nice progress lawdog! Like the streaking and pre-shading you are working with.

Handiabled - cool scheme & it looks to me like you are nailing it. As you mentioned, just a little softening with super-thin RLM65 would make it just about perfect. Don't cover it up too much though.

Manny… lurking… with an intelligence report telling me you have a box full o' -109s arriving at your safehouse shortly… are you getting ready to jump in here?!?!?! Hmm

Hello fellow 109'ers.  I thought I would post some in progess pics of my G-14.  These Hasegawa Bf 109 kits just seem to fall together and it took no time at all to get to the painting stage. I did add the luggage door behind the pilots head made out of Evergreen plastic.  The plane was then primed with Aclad Primer and the lines pre-shaded with Tamiya Flat Black (with the exception of Alclad for metallic schemes, I swtiched to Tamiya Acrylic paints years ago and never looked back).  I then concocted my own version of RLM 76 (starting with Tamiya's suggested mix) and sprayed the bottom.  I then used my usual "streak" weathering with lighter shades of 76.  This was then followed up with a "very" dilluted red-brown/flat black postshading on the panel lines, more prominently around the engine and radiators.  Oh yeah, I decided on "White 7", Heinz Ewald's mount, so I sprayed the yellow fuselage band and taped it off before applying the 76.  Heres what I have so far:

Manstein's revenge

You can see in this pic that the top (Hasegawa) 109 has what appears to be shorter and fatter wings than the bottom (Tamiya) bird...not sure which is more correct---but they both look AWESOME!

How did you do that color-segmented spinner on Balthazar's mount?

Must just be the angle...wing "chord" at root measures exactly the same....Tamiya wing length is 1mm shorter than Hase.

Spinner...painted white, masked and painted very dark grey (almost black), cut very thin strip of masking tape with circle cutter, masked off back half, sprayed green tip.

"Murphy" and his stupid laws!Bang Head

Since the Hasegawa windscreen flew off into nowhere, I had to order a new one....I figured that I would find the original right after I got the new installed. When I didn't find it, I figured it was long gone! Well, since I just finished this thing, I found the windscreen.....with my foot and all 190 lbs of Michigan steal and sex appeal that I am!

Now for the cold shower......

BTW fermis, would you mind posting what kits these a/c are?

The back two are Fujimi & Otaki "Gs"(can't remember now which was which), middle row, farthest away is Revell "G" (backdated-ish) to an "F", then Hase and Tamiya, and of course Hase and Tamiya again up front.

 Manstein's revenge:

Awesome!  Which is your favorite?

Tha Tamiya kit for sure! The Hase had some bad juju....problems all the way. Plus the Tamiya is just a better engineered kit and looks better.

As far as finishes/schemes.....I think Wick's is a little more interesting, but I dig em both!

I agree----the Wick scheme is just outstanding!  But both planes are awesome, especially if you read up on the histories of both pilots: one holds the record for kills during the French Campaign, and the other for kills during the BoB...

It actually looks like in one of your top pics that the wings are noticeably different in shape...Great Work!
