What happening?  Well, I'm finally done.  I must say the fine work from you guys on here has kept me motivated and this is probably a record build for me.  I did the base and pilot figure last night.  I'm sure the ease of the Hasegawa 109 had alot to do with this.  To recap briefy, I used a True Details 'pit and Eagle Cal decals.  I think I need to replace my Micro Sol since I had trouble getting the spiral then underwing and fuselage crosses to snuggle down.  There were a few small wrinkles which were a bear to iron out.  I've used Eagle Cal in the past with no such problems, so its safe to say its either operator error or the softener.  I may later replace the tires with a True Details set because I had to sand out a large mold separation seam which removed alot of the tread detail.

Anyways, I built the JG 52 mount of Heinz Ewald.  According to the decal literature, he was one of Eric Hartmann's wingman on the Russian front.   Unfortunately I would discover VERY late in the decaling process that Ewald's machine (according to the profile on the sheet) had the shorter metal tail and I had a wooden-tailed G-14 in my hand....DOH!Bang Head  I'm lighthearted about such stuff and am the furtherst thing from the so called AMS modeler.  Ehh,...99.9 percent of the people would notice anywaysHmm

The figure is from the Hasegawa Aircraft Action series which comes with a bunch of pilots from US, Britain, Japan, and Germany.  I was disappointed in the detail which was soft.  In my opinion, the ICM and even the old Revell Monogram figures from the bomber kits were much better detailed.  I had it so I figured I would use it.  Heres the photos and thanks for having me.

... the Gustav's got to be a little too "bumpy" for me, I still like the Friedrich.

It was the same for the Luftwaffe pilots that flew it as well.. They nicknamed the G,  "Die Beule " (The Bump)...

Hi, I could not figure out why so many floks have started the builds "before" the start date and then remebered that you guys say the month and then the day, here in SA we do it the other way round LOL!

Do I read it correc that it goes till 9 Jan 2013?

If so, is there any space left for a 1/48 ICM BF 109 F2 in captured South African Air Force desert colours?

Greetings...

Just run across this, Looks like a great group build... If not too late to enter, I would like to throw in. I will be building a tribute to Gunther Rall , building his Black 13 of JG:52, I have a few Bf109's (one of my favorites) and will likely use the 1/32 scale Trumpeter Bf;109G.

Thanks...

Can I join in this build?

Just aquired Trumpeter 1/32 ME 109 G6(early)

http://www.trumpeter-china.com/a/en/product/fly/1_32_Series/2011/0406/1882.html

Not sure at the moment if I will be using trumpeters etched brass set(s) for this build but I think that it will be just an OOB build. I can always get another and"tart it up" with Eduards interior and exterior at a later date.

Rob - other than the canopy problems, looks to be a sound build and you are ready to progress to weathering techniques.

Back to the canopy, yes masking tape can leave a residue on the plastic which can ruin the finish when you try removing it.  Next time if that happens, use some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip to remove this.  This will likely fog up the canopy, but a light application of future will clear it up.
It's best to remove canopy masking soon after painting, this avoids pulling up dried paint.  Fumes from both reguler styrene cement and super glue can result in fogging.  Some other adhesive choices are white glue or even future itself.

regards,
Jack

I did future it before but the masking tape left a residue and I ended up cracking the windscreen when trying to polish it and having to steal another from a different kit.  I used regular masking tape not Tamiya or 3M and I left in on overnight, which I am guessing added to the problem.  I chalk it up as a learning experience and one more area to obsess about in this hobby!

Okay, that makes sense.  Do you Future first, do you use the proper glue for clear?  No question, unless it's a P-47/51 bubble top, canopy masking is a PIA.  One of the few AM things I consider buying are mask sets, good luck.

Reasoned,  Yes it is foggy.  There are several things I need to work on when it comes to building awesome models and at the top of the list is canopy masking and painting!  I just have no patients with those guys!

Rob the Emil camo looks fine but is it just me or is the canopy a little cloudy?

I am finished with the Tamiya BF-109 E-3 and I am eh with the outcome.  I am still working on my weathering techniques which after my last few builds I am getting better at but still a long way away a lot of you guys are!  I purchased this kit off ebay and it was missing a few parts, such as the flaps for the down options and a few small antennas.

After this build I have become a lot more interested in the 109 and I havealready decided on my next build and paint scheme.

Comments and advice are welcome!  Thanks for looking!

Hello, whats happening folks?  I've been busy with other things lately, such as juggling work and a 4 year old daughter that requires obscene amounts of attention.  I did however manage to have a marathon paint session last night on the G-14 as I watched "A Bridge Too Far" on the Military Channel (Classic).  Its sprayed with Tamiya Acrylics per RLM mixing recommendations I found on the internet .  I then compared the mixes to some old Model Master enamels I had until they matched.  I have no idea if its correct and as with all my painting, I tend to tweak them to my liking.  It looks like RLM 74 and 75 to me.  I also added the flaps and such at this stage before the upcoming clear coat.  Here she is so far..(sorry if pics are a little grainy...we got a new camera and I'm still trying to figure out the settings).  Comments are always welcome....

I happen to think the G-6 and G-14 are the most bad a@@ looking of the 109 series, anyone else agree?...... or is it just me?

Joe

Turned out good! I like the colors of it!! Now is it in pursuit of the B-17 in your classroom??

Exactly!!! In fact, when snapping the photos, I tried to line things up to show the "attack", but the shot didn't work out as well as it looked in the viewfinder. Here's the shot, just for giggles...  Yes, the waist & top turret guns are lined up on him too...

Finished my G-14 a week or so ago. As she is my first ever -109 she didn't turn out too badly. I had expected a more colorful paint scheme, but being unfamiliar with RLM numbers, I was caught off guard with just how muted the finish turned out. Also, the decal for the spinner spiral tore repeatedly, as did the replacement I printed. In the end, I freehanded the thing and am only somewhat satisfied with the result.

She is currently hanging in my classroom at work, but I was in such a hurry to get her in place I didn't get any beauty shots under good lighting. I'll take care of that soon.

Masks in place for Camo Pattern

Wing Camo complete

Completed

She tried to spread her wings during hanging, and while she survived the crash better than the original "Blue 2", the dorsal loop antenna and one of the underwing antennas were lost to the carpet monster. I will have to scratch those together sometime.

Hey Reasoned - did I hear something on the radio about 100+ tornados out your way over the weekend? Indifferent Duck & cover buddy!

Sorry Vance, just got this (and not because I was in a shelterStick out tongue).  The weather has been actually rather pleasant here.... which makes for little bench time.
