The exact colours called for by official orders that would be existent during BoB would be these three:
02 grau
71 dunkelgrun
65 hellblau

Note though as early as August exceptions were beginning to appear.  Just as the British were going through a period of colour change so too was the Luftwaffe, but these were unofficial and were more field "experimentations".    Luckily the Brits kept better notes on captured aircraft and one will find more detailed descriptions on the use of mixed greys on Emils.

I suggest this web site, 109lair   - more detailed, very informative read and will give some exceptions to the rule.

Interiors I had to check some old kit instructions;  would be the same 02 grau and Tamiya points out the floor itself would be German grey XF-63 so I imagine this is RLM 66 schwarzgrau.   The E-3 canopy framework interior could be either 02 or 66.

A couple other colours to consider are:
04 gelb - yellow tactical/identification markings
70 schwarzgrun - prop hub

regards,

Jack

Thanks Jack, that's exactly what I needed... interesting read and very informative.

Okay... first stupid question. What colors do I need to paint an E-3. About to order the kit and might as well get the paints at the same time. I have zero experience or knowledge of Luftwaffe paint schemes. I need to know the exterior colors obviously, but information on interior colors would also be helpful.

Second stupid question... Am I correct in my understanding that most BoB Emils were painted in a three toned scheme and while the schemes varied greatly the colors were standard?

I'll save other stupid questions for later... that way all you Luft experten can have another good laugh.

Thanx for the help.

My vote goes for the Avia S-199, it technicaly was still a BF109 just assembled in a different factory from spare parts

Alright, still not exactly sure when I'll be building it, but I'll "pull a Doogs" here & ask for votes! (No, building them all is not an option!) My stash includes these options:

  • 1/48 Academy Bf109G-14 with an option for Italian markings
  • 1/72 Academy Bf109g-14, Hartmann's machine (I already have the white-washed version done)
  • 1/72 Airfix (new tool) Bf109G-6 with Finnish markings
  • 1/48 Hasegawa Bf109F "Trautloft", but I plan on using decals from an Iliad sheet I picked up in the fall
  • 1/48 Hobbycraft Avia S-199 with Israeli markings, if that's allowed in
  • 1/48 Tamiya Bf109E4/7

On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister

33 years ago I built the Airfix 1/24 109. Could not put the cowl on over the engine, plastic was just too thick, so I gutted the engine bay and ran no engine (this was back in the day when my camouflage consisted of what I could paint by brush. 20 years ago I did another. Also bought a dremel. Using the round cutting head I cut into the cowl while having a light behind it so I could see if I was going too thin. Worked like a champ but the underside of the cowl was horrid, luckily no one picked it up to look. Should be able to use the same trick here. I am doing my 1/48 Pro Modeler now, no engine detail as it comes which is fine. Will do the 1/24 Airfix one more time once I get done with this current one,  I hope.

Tucohoward

I'm in the middle of one right now. I also am building mine closed up. Even without the full engine I've had to grind off a bunch of the engine and engine supports along with the inside of the cowling. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but that's the only way I can make it all fit. The detail is nice but certainly more complex than Tamiya or Hasegawa kits in this scale. I am also using the Vector correction set which is nice just for the spinner alone, but there is much more in it.

Seems like the engine/cowl fit is a common problem with 109s of any scale. The Eduard E-7 I built (sans engine) had awful cowl fit.

I thought the Zvezda La-5 would have similar issues when I built it. Everything forward of the cockpit is so complex that there's NO WAY it should work. But somehow it all fit beautifully.

Ok, so I've seen the reviews, checked out the pics etc... But, I have to say this Zvezda 109 kit is something to behold. Particularly for the price... $26.00 shipped. Extraordinary OOB detail with excellent molding, little to no flash and very clean, crisp lines. The only 2 down sides I see at this point is the kit is set up in 2 versions (options) one with cowl etc. open to display a tiny, very nicely detailed Db 601n or closed "in flight". Evidently the panels don't fit if the engine is fully built, so no option to remove them at will.  The other issue is the kit is molded with squared off wheel wells which were only found on early F2's. F4's definitely had rounded wells. This will require a bit of scratch building to correct. I haven't decided yet which route I'm going to take for the motor as I usually like to display kits "closed up" if you will. This one might be the exception. It depends on what I finally decide for my little dio. I'll probably got OOB with the exception of correcting wells and adding belts to the office... I'm doing the Trop version on the top of the page in pic two. Will be starting in a couple of days...

...

I can pretty much ditto those comments on ICM's Spitfire Mk IX as well. Great value for the $ I paid including ground crew figures & equipment. The detail looks great, including the engine, which I'm told will also interfere with the fit of the cowlings if I try to close it up. But, with that engine I think I'll be leaving her open anyway. The decals on the Spitfire look kinda rough though, already have some AM replacements for them.

Looking forward to seeing your -109 built up, see what kind of things I should be expecting!

pzl66- I may have missed your criteria for joining this GB, but I've got a 1/72 Heller Bf-109G that has some scratched cockpit detail but nothing else. I don't have time to commit at the moment, but I wanted to ask for future reference if this might be something you'd allow. I'll be following along in any case- lots of good stuff here!

PilotSpike

Ill bite on this one. I just got a 1/48 Tamiya BF 109 for Christmas so it fits. Just getting into this so make way for a noobie.

John

Pro or noobie all is welcome. Everybody has to start somewhere, I would rate myself intermidiate so there is a range of build skills here. Im building two BF109's so the first one sorta a practice run for me before I go all out..

I think I'll check into this, however it will now be built after the Pro Modeler one I started the other day. I'm gonna build this one pretty straight forward with just photoetch for the harness and using paper straps instead of the metal ones (the paper settles down much nicer than the metal does) and a replacement canopy (scarfed it out of this one for an earlier build I screwed up) and aftermarket decals 'cause they provide more accurate decals and a better selection of planes to build using the "G" series BF's. Are we going to have a new post to show in progress pics? Here are a couple showing some minor detailing to the kit.

Ah! Got them! Zvezda BF109f2 and Tamiya Afrika Kublewagen with figures! Gonna do a little display/dio with a Trop F4. Might add more figures if I can find some that will work well, but for now the plan is a nice simple scene sort of like the one depicted on the Tamiya box. Now the only question is, do the 109 dio first or hit the Gabreski P-47 for the Big Beautiful Jugs GB... Such a dilema. Of course, I need to wrap up the X-wing I'm currently working on. Should be the next day or two!!

Well, I have a change of plans. The vintage Airfix 109 in 1/24 I bought is missing a lot of small parts. Trying to get this rectified with the seller, but at this point I suspect I'm stuck as it was sold with "no returns". I have a 1/32 Pro Modeler to fall back on. Guess I best switch directions to that one. John.

John,

Contact Airfix. They are very good about replacing missing/broken parts. Though you might need to get the whole tree. It is possible they won't even charge you. They didn't charge me for a vintage decal set I needed... Worth a shot...
