Have a good portion of the wiring added that I can do at this point, ie: not attached to the engine mounts. Also detailed out one of the ammo cans and made it removable to show how they used to load these things. Have some questions however, I've found a number of color pictures showing the DB601 outside of the aircraft (replacements?) that show the upper crankcase plate is in a natural metal finish. Anyone else out there that can confirm or deny this? Was it hit or miss? Any info would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard!

For ease and overall quality of engineering balanced with price, I'd recommend either the 1:48 Revell Bf 109G or any of Tamiya's 1:48 Bf 109E series.

I built Eduard's 109E-7 Trop last year. For the most part a very manageable kit, though the engine cowl had some fit issues (I added styrene tabs inside the fuselage to force the thing to fit the way I wanted).

Cyber-Hobby's new 109E-4 is generally regarded as the best 1/32 E in terms of pretty much everything - accuracy, fit, detail, and it's shockingly inexpensive for a brand new 1/32 kit. If you're comfortable with fiddly parts in the cockpit, etc, I'd recommend it.

I've heard both good and bad things about various late-model Hasegawa 109s, but I haven't built or even played with the sprues of any, so I'm not the one to offer recommendations on them...

1:32 for a newbie? Probably tougher to start out with than 1:48, and more expensive.

Yep, got mine on order.  Since I have all kinds of AM decals I opted for the Overtrees boxing -no decals, masks nor instructions (but can be downloaded from their site).  Twenty dollars cheaper, but that in turn was the cost to ship to NA.

Jack

First time I've ordered an Overtree, but Eduard's website has a photo showing the contents as being a full set of sprues, including clear, and two frets of PE.

regards,

Jack

Looks good! I've found rlm 74 to be an elusive color to try to get just right. I see it as too green or too gray...I'm liking the way yours turned out.

Not much fun
Posted by Tucohoward on Monday, February 6, 2012 4:45 PM

Spent the last week riveting the fuselage and upper wings with the MDC rivet tool. Very time consuming and tedious but I like the results better than the rolling type, especially in a large scale like 1/32. The effect is very subtle and hard to see in photographs, much like real thing. Actually rivets are quite visible in many pistures of 109s. Not a great return on investment, but I like it. You can also see where I have ground away for clearance of the gun cowling.

Wow! nice rivet job there. I've looked at mdc's tool, i have a roller type but it is hard to manipulate and only works on straight, flat surfaces. But like you said, cost is steep, you'd have to use it on evey model to make it work having. I've found that the effect should be subtle as possible, so I usually run thin cement along each rivet line then sand them with 800 or 1000-2000 grit sand paper and by the time I prime and paint I get the effect I'm after. Again...too bad you're putting that cowling on...

The tool is cheap. You can get a whole set of beading tools for $20, which is what the MDC tool is. The investment I meant was the time. That's how I spent my Super Bowl Sunday.

Not too pleased so far with Eduard
Posted by 70gtvert on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 5:34 PM

Working on the Eduard E-3 engine, detailing it out as there was a lot of weak details with it. The engine mounts, the supercharger, the gun support rods all weakly done. I only bought this thing after substantial research and it had nothing but good words wherever I wen. Sad part is not a ONE of the reviews I saw said that you cannot close the cowl if you add the engine. Not sure if I want to go that route either, so now I have to debate +'s or -'s of leaving it exposed.

Ya know, it would not be so bad if on those kits where you can't close the cowl that they would give you a nicely detailed engine with a stand to mount outside the cowl, but the DB601 in the Eduard kit has no "V" , its a solid piece. So I will debate what I want to do with this.

Just have the cowl panels propped up, that is a mighty fine engine to close up..
