Merry Christmas Sean! True! I can envision how it can help to save time and stay focused on the current project!

The long main strut on my right-side LG is a bit warped.....angled a few degrees, just enough to be noticeable. I've gently bent it straight a few times but it returns to odd angle. I'm not going to sweat it.

Nose weight: (No, that isn't a member here!Laugh [(-D]).....I had added a couple dozen lead split-shot sinkers beneath the nose turret position but that was not enough. I was resigned to buying some more weight when I found a lead tire balancing weight in a parking lot. Since then I've found two more!

I cut the first one into 3 chunks and dropped them into a bed of epoxy just aft of the pit bulkhead. The bird sits perfectly.

Nam!  That's a great tip!  The best thing is that its useable on other parts and kits too!  Thanks!

Cheers,
Alex

On a semi-related note.....my sister called a bit ago about some unopened gifts she handed me while dropping me off.....

I hadn't opened them. So she made me.

1st one was a 1/48 Revell P-38J!

How DO they know this stuff? They know I'm into kits.....but they got the scale right!Confused [%-)]

Thanks David, Merry Christmas to you as well!  I really do hope you enjoy your gifts, and it looks like we will be building Japanese warbirds together!  I received a Hasegawa 1/48 Ki-44 and a Hasegawa 1/48 Ki-100 from the gift exchanges, so it looks like IJA and IJN builds are the order of the day! Thumbs Up [tup]

Merry Christmas Frankie!....and thanks for the pm!

Yeah, building the LG assembly that way just let me do more work on the model in shorter time....didn't want to put it away while on a roll just to let paint dry.

Plus! Dry fit your LG parts! You will need to drill out some socket holes and/or trim some pins at glue points to get a proper fit.

Thanks again for the XMas gifts!

Killing time until XMas party tonight....

When it was time to paint the wheel wells on the PH GB PBY....to save some time, I built the LG by fitting the parts in the well and holding them with white glue....in essence using the well as a template.

Then I glued the various LG parts in place and after drying, moistened the white glue with a Q-Tip and removed the assembly as a whole. Then I was able to install the well and get it painted with minimal masking.

Just a belated thought........

I have been stuck in neutral for a while because Frank got my last mask for my bird. I just got some more mask in today so maybe I will have some movement this weekend on the old girl.

Thanks for the extra bumps Guys! I'm working on the PH GB PBY which is just a couple weeks late....and other things which, of course are also late.

My goal is to have stuff cleared out and to get grounded for future builds.

WE WELCOME ANY NEW MEMBERS!

Thanks Namrednef. That proved to be very helpful. Through the Seebees site I came across a link to the VPNavy.org site and was able to search for the first aircraft. There's actually a very interesting accounting by the Pilot enitled "Down at Sea" about the airdraft's demise due to the premature detonation of a depth charge. Fascinating read, the website has a very good search feature and a number of photos. Anyhow, they list the Bureau Number as 08328, but I'm not sure that would have beenstenciled on the aircraft.

But there might have been a "28" on the tail. otherwise minimal markings.

Try looking into 93rd Seabees Batt on a google search. The seem to have operated with PPM and a PT sqd.

I'm busy right now but will look later if you like!

Hot-Pb.

Looks like this could be another pic of the same bird on the Sepik River

It is from here:

http://www.daveswarbirds.com/blackcat/photo12.htm

As for tail codes, I havent had any luck yet but will keep an eye out. For RAAF subjects, the Australian War Memorial webpage has a listing of squadrons and their respective codes, and another site called ADF Serials maps the careers of aircraft in RAAF service. Wondering if there is anything simular for USN/USAF aircraft?

Good luck!

So some advice folks. I'm leaning towards trying to build up a passable representation of a black cat from VP-11, posted to New Guinea in '43. These birds generally seemed to sport some fanciful nose art, which appeals to me. Something similar to this:

Photobucket

Most of the images I've seen, though, only show cats from VP-11 from the nose, it's hard to distinguish what other codes they sported on the rear fuselage and tail. This is one exception, a VP-11 cat on the Sepik River sporting a "34" tailcode. anyone have any guidance on where to find tailcodes for individual aircraft or other insignia they would have sported?

Photobucket

cheers,
Hot-Pb

Sheesh, I really had to look hard to find this GB - Whats up with That ? Question - Which 1/72 PBY kit out on the market would you reccomend ? I like Airfix kits  but have never built Academy, Revell - eh some pan out some dont..  I came across a set of Coast Guard decals yesterday while searching for decals for something else. Just way too Cool not to Build ! Any recomendations for which manufacture to use ?

Sorry, the BVD has not been monitoring as diligently as he should.....moving/non-moving trouble....(not with the bowels, folks!) Trying to keep up.

I'll defer to Alex' opinions......I have just the Revell kit.

Sean, let us know what you want to do! Welcome!

Hi Sean,

Go with Academy.  Your options in 1/72 are Academy, Airfix, Matchbox, and Revell.  Of the four, the Airfix, Matchbox, and Revell kits have raised panel lines, zillions of raised rivets everywhere, toy-like features, and little to no interior. I believe the Matchbox kit is a repop of the Revell kit. The Academy kit is a really nice rendition, with no accuracy issues.  That's my My 2 cents [2c] on the matter.

But, so you can make up your own mind, here are some reviews...

http://www.modelingmadness.com/reviews/allies/us/jorgensenpbypreview.htm
http://www.modelingmadness.com/reviews/allies/us/michaelspby.htm
http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/portland/971/Reviews/usaaf/pby-5-catalina.htm
I can't find a review of the Airfix kit, but its older, and more toylike than the Revell.

HTH!

Cheers,
Alex
