 Daywalker,

Mind if I join? I promise not to post too many pics! Only pics of a completed build.

Mind if you join?  Not at all!  In fact, we're glad to have you.  I added you to page one.  When you decide on your build, let me know and I'll add it to the list. Thumbs Up [tup]

Bummer about those decals, as they had some interesting subjects you probably won't find anywhere else. Sigh [sigh]  Thanks for the info!

just a quick update on the spada decals.

the woodgrain decals look great when put over the wood colour and they have a really nice wood grain effect and settle really well with set and sol,but boy are they thin! if they fold over you've had it.

after screwing up a couple of times i worked out that you have to position the decals where they are going to stay, you cant move them around because they are so thin.

From the three factories all Fokker D.VII airframes were covered in either four or five colour lozenge camouflage.  In the field many were overpainted to various degrees. The best lozenge decal is from Microsculpt.  See their gallery.

The engines in the Roden kit are quite accurate. While there were variations the two main installations were Mercedes D.IIIaü 180hp and the BMW IIIa 185hp.

OK, then I take it that I need to apply decales to the inside of the cockpit? Then do whatever I want on the outside of the airframe. Correct? Now which engine goes with the Roden D-VII that I have (early). I think this build is going to be a lot of fun, and I already have my next kit planned (Bolcke's DII assuming I can find a 1/48th kit)

Depending on the decals you are using (if the carrier is clear) then yes, you can reverse the decal pattern and get a good representation.  The Eduard kit also has segments of lozenge for the cockpit interior.  You can add the outside lozenge then paint over it but it is better to leave it off and just paint the plastic.

OK, I now have even more questions for the masses! I've been going thru this Ospry book about JGS2 Bolcke (a good book by the way for history buffs). Anyway in the book they state that many DR-1's and D-VII's were shipped with that streaked camo from the factory.(sorta like a bad O.D. paint job). I'm thinking that that's going to be the basis for my build, and then go on from there. Will I still need to do the lozenge camo in the interior? Secondly can any of you aces recommend a good way to replicate that streaked paint job other than with a stiff brush?

And now that I've found out there's other things to model besides FW190's, I've come to the conclusion that somewhere in my life I gotta build a DR-1 in 1/48th or even 1/32 scale. Can anyone recommend a good kit? And last just how good is the Eduard Albatross DII?

Here is a bit of fun on this same kit.  Done by some plugger hereabouts.  Its a good kit with only minor fit problems.  The decals are not a problem.

Wow Stephen, that looks amazing. Im really looking forward to this build. Ill follow your advice on the build to the letter. Only hope it comes out looking half as nice.

Guy, you're going to love that kit! I've built one and have a second in the stash that I'm contemplating adding to this GB. It's about as close to a shake & bake that a bipe can be. Not a whole lot of rigging either. Lots of decals - I mean LOTS - on the upper and lower wings, but worth every minute you put into it! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thx for the Imput Ruddratt. Have you got a pic of the one you built? I followed Stephens link and his looks awesome. Im seriously liking the idea of not much rigging, and the GB in general.

Daywalker! I have the planes! Went to the Hobby Town with some of my Christmas money and I got (both Revell 1/72) Fokker Dr.1 tri and Sopwith tri. I'm going to do a little in-flight display of Richthofen knocking the Sop down. It may not be 100% accurate but  I thought it would be a cool idea. Now, how did Manfred von Richthofen have his plane painted?

No problem, Guy. Here's a few of my build.

The overall fit is great, but be sure to do a test fit of the IP between the fuselage halves. I found the plastic IP to fit better than the PE one.

Also, here's a reference page I found quite handy during my build....

Fantastic work Rudratt, and an excellent website to boot. It amazes me that that plane is original and unrestored. And looks fantastic still.

Thanks much fellas! Thumbs Up [tup] It's a fun kit and almost falls together.

Guy, my eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw those pics. They really give one an indication of where much of the wear & tear occurred.

Mobious, another great site, and I just added it to my faves. Thanks for finding that! Thumbs Up [tup]

This is going to be another fine GB. Loads of talent here, plus once again we are privileged to have our resident guru of gurus Stephen Lawson on board. I am really looking forward to seeing what comes off of everyone's workbench! Thumbs Up [tup]

Mike- Love that Fokker of yours, and glad you showed those pics again.  Stunning build! Approve [^]

Some great websites for reference too, thanks guys!  I bookmarked all of them. Wink [;)]  I have to admit, I am really wanting to get a D.VII.  Can't believe I don't have one in the stash! Shock [:O]

Hey daywalker, I love the DVII and would really like to build one of the four I have in the stash, but I'm terrified after the last attempt debacle! It was all Fokkered up! I think I'll try the Eduard Fokker E. V. One less wing to worry about.

 Best Regards,

 Mobious

Boba,

Richtofen had various paint schemes throughout his career, maybe just stick with the all red scheme.  I did find a Roden kit of one of his Dr. 1's that was red forward of the cockpit and then a faded od green aft that was kinda cool.  May have to go back and pick that kit up.

You got it!  I updated page one for you.  I built the DML Fokker D.VIII for KOTS I, and though challenging I really enjoyed it.  The E.V/D.VIII is my favorite WWI bird, and I'm very interested to hear how you like the Eduard offering. Thumbs Up [tup]

Was there only one color of tape used on planes with the lozenge scheme?  The reason I ask is that I always see models with blue tape, yet my Roden kits come with red tape.  Is this correct or does it even matter?

Hey loftwoller, Its more a work o fart than a work of art.Wink [;)] Looking forward to seeing the DVII you have planned. Didn't you finish an FW190 recently. Oh and that Famo was inspirational, complete with an awesome loadout. Very cool build.

Daywalker, took a look back at your Fokker EV build in KOTS I, very nice work indeed. Looks like the top wing maybe a bit troublesome, especially for some like me who has 5 thumbs on each hand.

Lewbud, I think Stephen Lawson has an extremely informative article on the subject of Flugzeugstoff (lozenge) fabric over on Aeroscale. It's worth a look.

I believe the anserw to your question concerning the ribbing tape is on page 6.

Guy, thanks for the clever link! Wink [;)] Man, that is some serious stuff. Couldn't come close to that on my best day. Great work Mobious!

OK Frank, I'm probably going to regret this later, but right now I'm feeling brave (or crazy) enough to add that Eduard 1/48 DH-2 to my list of builds for this GB, (quite possibly followed by Eduard's 1/48 Fokker E.V). As if the S.E.5a didn't have enough rigging on it's own! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]
